SUMMARY STATEMENT:
In keeping with the City of McCall Public Art Policies, adopted by City Council June 29, 2012, a volunteer selection committee recently reviewed qualifications from ten (10) Pacific
Northwest artists and chose three (3) finalist artists to invite to submit specific proposals for public artwork to be installed in the small public gathering space that will be created
next to the Alpine Playhouse and within the Fir Street right of way as part of the City’s larger sidewalk connections project. These specific design proposals were then used to gain
community input into final artwork selection. Public input was collected via online survey, open house at Alpine Playhouse, and display at the McCall Public Library. Matt Babcock’s
“Mountain Goats at Play” proposal was favored by the public and the McCall Public Art Advisory Committee unanimously recommended that City Council select this artist for the public
art project.
This public art project is funded by an Idaho Commission on the Arts grant ($10,000) received by the City matched by City general fund allocation for public art ($11,500). $1500 of grant
funds were expended to three finalist artists to create specific design proposals. The remaining funds ($20,000) will cover design, fabrication, and installation of the public art project
(see Scope of Work in attached Artwork Commission Agreement).
The Artwork Commission Agreement has been reviewed by the City Attorney.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve the selection of Matt Babcock’s “Mountain Goats at Play” public art proposal for the plaza next to the Alpine Playhouse, the Artwork Commission Agreement with Matt Babcock and
authorize the Mayor to sign all necessary documents.
