SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The City of McCall and the McCall-Donnelly High School Advanced Art Class have teamed up to create
a public artwork for the retaining wall along Railroad Avenue. The public artwork will be a 4 ft. by 8 ft.
acrylic mural painted on marine-grade plywood, finished with acrylic polymer weather proofing, and
anchored within a channel iron frame bolted to the retaining wall. This mural will be a semi-permanent
artwork. When this mural begins to weather, anticipated in 3-4 years, this mural will be removed and a
new panel can be installed in the iron frame. The mural panel will be placed as not to interfere with
existing landscaping along the retaining wall.
In keeping with the McCall Public Art Policies adopted by City Council (June 29, 2012), the mural design
selection to date has been as follows:
The City of McCall Public Art Advisory Committee appointed a public art selection committee for
this project. Selection committee members included landscape architect Dave Peugh, artist and
architect Claire Remsberg, business representative Kathy Muench, Mayor Aymon, and community
at-large representative Marlene Bailey. This committee reviewed six design proposals developed
by the students, then selected three finalist designs to be released for public input.
Public input on the three final designs was gathered via an online survey and comment forms in
the McCall Public Library. 168 comments were received. 59% of respondents preferred the mural
design concept recommended for Council approval (attached). The project public art selection
committee concurred with the public input and recommends this design for Council approval.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve the recommended mural design concept for the Railroad Avenue retaining wall.
