i > < I, . > < November 2021
We wish to extend our gratitude to all of you who have stuck with us
through these last few months as we've made changes, modifications,
and additions to our programs at the Senior Center. We appreciate those
of you who have learned how to use Zoom for virtual programs, and to
those of you who have come back to participate in our ever-growing list
of afternoon card groups and other in -person activities. We are thankful
for your patience as we navigate these months together, and for all of
you who have heeded the health mandates and guidance about face
masks and distancing. We have all benefited from each other's
cooperation with these protocols, and we look forward to seeing more of
you in the months to come.
To help us keep the Senior Center a safe and welcoming place for all,
kindly continue to:
• Pre -register for any "at COA" program by calling (617) 972-6490.
• Scan your My Senior Center Card upon entering the building.
• Remember to wear your mask regardless of vaccination status.
• Dress accordingly, as windows are open regardless of the elements
outside.
• And consider carpooling with a friend due to limited parking in the
parking lot.
As a reminder, the local Town election is Tuesday, November 2, 2021. Polls
will be open from 7 AM until 8 PM.
Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving!
With gratitude,

Book Club In -Person & Zoom
(held at the Library & via Zoom)
Wednesday, November 10 at 10 am
We will be discussing The Lives ofGirlsand
Women by Alice Munroe. This book chronicles a
young girl's growing up in rural Ontario in the
1940's. When Del Jordan, who lives on her
father's fox farm, begins spending more time in
town, she is surrounded by women --her mother,
an agnostic, opinionated woman who sells
encyclopedias to local farmers; her mother's
boarder, the lusty Fern Dogherty; and her best
friend, Naomi, with whom she shares the
frustrations and unbridled glee of adolescence.
Through these unwitting mentors and in her own
encounters with sex, birth, and death, Del
explores the dark and bright sides of womanhood.
All along she remains a wise, witty observer and
recorder of truths in small-town life. The result is
a powerful, moving, and humorous
demonstration of Alice Munro's unparalleled
awareness of the lives of girls and women.

Community voices: Louise Arslanian and her Art
Louise Arslanian was born and raised in
Levis, Canada, a small town on the south
shore of the St. Lawrence River, directly
across from Quebec City. She came to the
United States at the age of 24, to work in
Newton. It was there that she met her
DSPIAUed Rt the Watertoww COA
future husband. They were married in
1962 and moved to Watertown two years later.
Louise has been living alone for last sixteen years. ,
She has a son and grandson in California, and a
daughter and grandson in Framingham.
She started studying art at age 55, taking some painting classes, and she
studied art in the 1980's with Gene Faucher, a watercolorist at the Newton
Arts Association. She then went on to study art with Dawn Scaltreto at our
Senior Center, where she was a member of the Senior Center Art Class for
more than fifteen years. Now she paints with acrylics and has an eclectic
collection of paintings. She taught arts & crafts classes, and she crocheted
clothes for dolls, which were raffled off at the various Senior Center parties.
About five years ago, when she began to experience health issues that
limited her mobility, she started working at home, crocheting stuffed toys
and making lap robes and full-sized afghans. Since then she has donated
dozens of her works to different charitable projects, both directly and
through the Senior Center. She doesn't use any patterns for her creations;
she simply looks at pictures of crocheted art to get ideas, then she creates
her own works. She recently made a wedding doll, crocheting the doll and
sewing the wedding dress.
Marsha Staten, her neighbor, moved near Louise thirteen years ago and first
met Louise at the Arts & Crafts activities organized by Springwell for
Woodland Towers. They soon became friends. Marsha regularly brings to
Louise yarn that is donated to the Senior Center, then someone from the
Senior Center picks up the finished products and selects the very fortunate
recipients.
From Marsha: "Louise is a very talented, passionate artist. She is an excellent
teacher and has taught me many things about art. She is a generous friend,
giving freely of her time. "
