SUMMARY STATEMENT:
Council directed staff to survey the community to gage how the community would like to move forward with a renewal of the Occupancy 3% Local Option Tax. The survey ran for approximately
4 weeks with significant push over social media and an article in the Star News. As of the time of this agenda bill, there were less than 25 respondents who took the survey. Staff will
provide the Council the complete results of the survey at the meeting.
Based on the low response to the survey staff recommends that Council have one, well advertised, Community Conversation regarding the renewal of the Occupancy 3% Local Option Tax. At
this meeting staff will provide an educational piece as to what purposes this tax has funded historically, a recap of the attorney opinion about disbursing the funds to private organizations,
and ideas for a possible change to allowable purposes. The groups will then break out into five smaller groups led by the Council to discuss options of allowable uses the community
would like the funds to be used for.
Staff will compile the suggestions from the Community Conversation along with the suggestions from the survey and come back to Council with a recommended ordinance.
The attorney memo and current occupancy local option tax ordinance are attached.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Review the survey results and direct staff with a way forward.
