Fall has arrived, and our October calendar offers a variety of morning programs held
virtually on Zoom, including exercise classes and discussion groups, and afternoon
activities held in -person at the Senior Center, including games and card groups,
knitting circle, chair volleyball, movies, and a flu clinic. Please know that masks are
important for everyone to wear when inside the Senior Center, or traveling on the
Senior Shuttle Bus. We want to continue to keep all visitors healthy, and with your
cooperation, we hope to do just that.
School is in session and parking in the lot at the Senior Center is extremely limited,
as it is shared space with the School Department. If you are coming for a senior
parking permit, SHINE appointment, meeting with a staff member, or other
resource, you may consider visiting us in the afternoon when parking is more
available.
Jim Cunningham/Bob Horrigan Inside the newsletter and on the calendar page, programs are identified as "on
Senior Shuttle Drivers Zoom" or "at COA." COA means in-house at the Council on Aging/Senior Center. If

staying connected, finding home, finding security,
and finding balance. Join in with others from your

Book Club In -Person & Zoom
(held at the Library & via Zoom)
Wednesday, October 13 at 10 am
We will be discussing The Elephant Whisperer, by
Lawrence Anthony. When South African
conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to
accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his
Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his
common sense told him to refuse. But he was the
herd's last chance of survival. They would be killed
if he wouldn't take them, so in order to save their
lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that
followed he became a part of their family. And as
he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he
came to realize that they had a great deal to teach
him about life, loyalty, and freedom. This is a
heartwarming, exciting, funny, and sometimes sad
account of Anthony's experiences with these huge
yet sympathetic creatures.

Why l joined the Friends of the Watertown Council
on Aging by Carol Airasian
"I joined the Friends of the Watertown
Council on Aging in August of 2012. It took
me a while to get my bearings so I knew
how the Senior Center and the Friends group worked, and I
found out that the Friends were the fundraising support group
for activities at the Senior Center.
That's when I joined the Friends.
Mary Keenan has been the President of the Friends the whole
time I've been a member. I enjoy working with her because she
knows a great many people in Watertown and she's well
respected by everyone I've ever known. We have the support
of members who are passionate about helping the Watertown
Senior Center be the best place for older adults to have fun,
meet friends, and try something new. Please consider
becoming a member of the Friends today.
Our next meeting is October 14 at 2:00 PM at the Senior Center. Call
Mary Keenan, President, at (617) 926-5295.
We hope you'll join us!"
The Friends of the Watertown Council on Aging is a registered 501
(c)3 tax-exempt organization, Tax ID #222481280. Donations
benefit the Watertown Council on Aging/Senior Center.

Community Voices: Re" will be 100years old in November
or Rose has been with the Watertown Senior Center since its creation. This is
how she describes her life before and after joining the Center:
A "I was born in Watertown on November 8, 1921, and always lived in Watertown.
went to school in Watertown, got married, and had two boys. One of them
- became a guidance counselor in the Arlington schools. My other son became an
engineer and lives in NH. I have been a widow for thirty-nine years.
I retired from Blue Cross at the age of sixty-two and started going to Line Dancing
at St. James Armenian Church. Later our group started working out at the Phillip
School's gym. Our dancing teacher, Evelyn, took us on a day trip to Troy NH, we
were there all day and danced and had a great day. We started a WOW Club
(Watch Our Weight.) We did exercise and talked about food to eat.
A group of us went to Town Council Meetings and asked for a Senior Center. The Center was opened in
1993. We had a party, it was great. One day a man brought in a box of cribbage supplies, and I learned to
play and have been playing ever since. We played different card games on Thursday morning; we had a
large group.
One day I taught people to play Rummikub, and we now have a large group. I make many friends at the
Center and had a good time.
I wanted to do something for the Center. So I crochet. I made dishcloths and towels, placemats, and
blankets. All proceeds benefit the Senior Center.

about Rage
Who is a friend? I'm sure there are many definitions
depending on who you ask. Today, I'd like to tell you about my
friend Rose. I've known her for thirty years here at the Senior
Center and at our church.
There are many stories of her involvement with the Senior Center,
starting with her helping to get our new Senior Center built and
taking an active interest in what services and programs were
offered. Her greatest impression she left with me was and still is her dedication to the Senior Center.
For thirty years she made an afghan for every one of our parties to be raffled off. (She has this year's
already done!). We started out with five parties a year and now have three. That means she made more
than one hundred afghans for us! You felt really lucky if you won "Rose's afghan". She has been making
dishcloths and towels for years to sell — all to benefit programs at the Center. She has also volunteered to
help at many activities.
Rose also has a playful part. I remember going to a different Mass one week and smiled when I saw her
