> < . • > September 2021
The September calendar offers a variety of morning programs held virtually on
Zoom, as well as afternoon group activities held in -person at the Senior Center.
The Senior Center is open, but please know that masks are again important for
everyone to wear when inside the Senior Center. School is again in session and
parking is extremely limited. If you are coming for a senior parking permit, SHINE
appointment, meeting with a staff member, or other resource, you may consider
visiting us in the afternoon when parking is more available.
Inside the newsletter and on the calendar page, programs are identified as "on
Zoom" or "at COA." COA means in-house at the Council on Aging/Senior Center. If
you have a specific question, give us a call and we will let you know the status of a
program. In addition, as new visitors join us, there may be limitations imposed for
group sizes causing us to rotate attendance. As a result, we need you to call us and
pre -register for any "at COA" program you plan to attend. If you are not pre-
registered, we may not have a space for you.
New Guidelines when coming to the Senior Center:
-Pre-register for any "at COA" program by calling (617) 972-6490.
•Scan your My Senior Center Card upon entering the building.
-Masks are to be worn by all visitors regardless of vaccination status.
•Hand sanitizer stations are available throughout the building.
•No coffee or food service provided, but you may bring your own.
•Dress accordingly — Windows will be open to maintain air circulation.
•Consider carpooling with a friend due to limited parking in the Phillips lot.
Finally, there are still slots available in the Seniors and Veterans Property Tax Work -
Off Program where participants can earn up to $1500 for work in a Town Depart-
ment. Call us today for an application. Certain income and eligibility factors must
be met. Also, make sure to stop by our table at Watertown's Faire on the Square on
September 25 at Saltonstall Park. We look forward to saying hello! Thank you, and
stay safe!

Book Club
(held at the Library & via Zoom)
Wednesday, September 8 at 9 am
We will be discussing Maisie Dobbs, by Jacqueline
Winspear. This is the first book in a series about a
brave, brilliant young woman who rises from her
working-class origins to study at Cambridge and
earn a place as a respected detective. Maisie is 14
when her mother dies, and she must go into
service to help her father make ends meet. Her
prodigious intellect and the fact that she is
sneaking into the manor library at night to read
Hume, Kierkegaard, and Jung alert Lady Rowan to
the fact that she has an unusual maid. She
arranges for Maisie to be tutored, and the girl
ultimately qualifies for Cambridge. She goes for a
year, only to be drawn by the need for nurses
during the Great War. After serving a grueling few
years in France, Maisie puts up a shingle in 1929
as a private investigator. She is a perceptive
observer of human nature, works well with all
classes, and understands the motivations and
demons prevalent in postwar England.

The early and mid-1950s saw many R&B songs
that were released more successfully by white
artists. After Elvis broke through in 1956, Little
Richard and the Coasters scored several Pop hits
as did the Platters and Brook Benton capitalizing
on a smooth style from an earlier era. By the end
of the decade, gospel -based black artists like Ray
Charles, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and the Drifters
achieved mainstream success. James Brown was a
massive R&B star but would have to wait until the
sixties to find crossover success.

Jefferson Kyle Kidd moves from town to
town as a non-fiction storyteller, sharing the news
from the far reaches of the globe. In the plains of
Texas, he crosses paths with a 10-year-old girl
taken in by the Kiowa people and raised as one of
their own. As they travel hundreds of miles into
the unforgiving wilderness, the two face
tremendous challenges of both human and natural
forces as they search for a place they can call

Wild Nights with Emily
2018, IMDB 6.2, PG-13,1h 26 min
Thursday, September 16 at 3 :Z5pm
In the mid-19th century, Emily Dickinson
was writing prolifically and in a
passionate romantic relationship with her sister-in-
law, yet is still popularly believed to be a recluse.
Informed by Dickinson's private letters, Wild Nights
with Emily is a humorous and bold take on this
iconic American poet, who found herself facing
male literary gatekeepers too confused by her
genius to take her work seriously, and instead
attracts the attention of an ambitious editor who
also sees Emily as a convenient cover for her own
bizarre love triangle.
The Marksman

Ex -Marine and hardened Arizona

Community Voices: /n Memory of Mary Horrigan
If you have driven or walked down Orchard Street recently, you have
probably noticed a new wrought iron bench that has been installed on the
grassy area in front of the DPW. If you stop and look closely, you will see an
inscription that reads "In Memory of Mary Horrigan."
Mary was a member of our Senior Center. She spent the last several years
y, of her life as a crossing guard on the corner of Orchard and Springfield
Streets. She felt personally responsible for "her" children and made sure
that they (and their parents) got safely to school on time. During the
holidays, she sent a small package of handmade goodies home with each
child (she was a fabulous baker!) She loved to talk to the parents and in
doing so, she got the parents talking to each other. Parents who might have
nodded and said a quick "hi" in passing got to know one another's names,
where they lived, perhaps an email address or phone number. A neighborhood of acquaintances became a
neighborhood of friends.
When Mary became ill with cancer in November of 2019, she had to leave her post, but her friends didn't
leave her. Parents and kids combined to send cards, drawings and notes, some visited, all kept in contact.
Mary passed away in January of this year and all the parents wanted to create some kind of memorial for
her. It wasn't possible to do anything directly on "her corner," but with the help of Town Councilor Tony
Palomba and the new DPW Superintendent, Gregory St. Louis, the group received permission for a bench
in front of the DPW —the parents' group would raise the money, and the town would order and install the
bench. The parents took up a collection, and Mary's two sisters and a few of her friends and relatives
contributed very generously to the fund.
More money was raised than was needed, so after the bench was paid for, the group gave a generous
check to the Whooley Foundation at the Watertown Police Station. This organization helps needy
Watertown children during the holidays —Mary loved kids s
and she loved her job as a crossing guard with the WPD.
Marys family and friends gathered for an informal -
dedication of the bench on July 10. Many of the parents
have walked their kids over to the bench and spent a few
minutes thinking about Mary and reminiscing about the
good times the neighborhood group had together with her
and how she brought everyone together. She is greatly
missed and will be remembered!
