Please read the attachments carefully, beginning with the Tybee draft ordinance. The supporting documents are
the Darien and Chatham County ordinances, both of which are more restrictive than my proposal.
My ordinance is based upon the Riparian Buffer Guidebook I sent everyone several weeks ago, model
ordinances from the Southern Environmental Law Center and River Basin Center at UGA, and advice from 4
lawyers who specialize in this kind of stuff. I'd appreciate your feedback in advance of the city council meeting,
so I can adequately address any questions or concerns. This is an extremely important issue, and we need to act
promptly to fill the void left in the wake of Judd Turner's EPD decision.
I spoke with Buddy Carter on Tuesday, and he said the entire coastal legislative delegation is meeting next
week to discuss enacting legislation to give permanent protection to coastal marshlands, but that it's imperative
that local governments act now to prevent damage being done to our environmental resources between now and
the next legislative session.
I appreciate your giving this your attention, and look forward to your comments and questions.
