ADJOURNMENT • • BLOCK WATCH CAPTAINS Regular Meeting March 26, 1996 MINUTES The Block Watch Captains met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, March 26, 1996, 6:30 p.m. at Bateman Hall, 11331 Ernestine Avenue, Lynwood, California. Twenty -one (21) Block Watch Captains were in attendance. Staff present was Dorothy Siddell, Recreation Superintendent. Deputy Cynthia Moore of Century Sheriff's Station was present. - I. -- CALL TO - ORDER - - Mr. Adolfo Lopez, Chairperson called the Block Watch Captain's meeting to order at 6:40 p.m. II. INVOCATION Chairman Lopez led the group in prayer. III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Captain Santillan led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES It was MOVED by Captain Eloise Evans, SECONDED by Captain Maria Santillan CARRIED unanimously to approve the minutes as distributed of the regular meeting of February 27, 1996. V. REPORT BY STAFF Chairman Lopez announced that Janice Thomas was doing volunteer work and for this reason she was not present. Chairman Lopez announced that Deputy David Haney has been relocated to another state and that Deputy Cynthia Moore will be our new Century Sheriff's representative. Dorothy Siddell, Recreation Superintendent informed the Block Captains of various upcoming city events. They include: Womens Commission Luncheon Thursday, March 28, 1996 at 12:00 noon at Bateman Hall Easter Egg Hunt (Free giveaway to winners and free prizes for everyone) Saturday, April 6, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. at Mervyn M. Dymally Park /Diamond #1 Drive By Agony Peace March Saturday, April 20, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Saturday, April 20, 1996 at 12:00 noon at Bateman Hall VI. OLD BUSINESS Chairman Lopez read the Earthquake Proclamation and announced that City Council had declared the month of April Earthquake Preparedness month. He also encourage everyone to participate in the Earthquake Preparedness and the Drive By Agony Peace March on April 20, -1996. _ Chairman Lopez mentioned that the Cinco de Mayo Planning Committee meets every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Lynwood Community /Transit Center. If anyone is interested in participating, please come to the meeting. It was also mentioned that the Unity Festival /July 4th Celebration would be combined. Captain Pete Mesta reported that he would like to know if the City has a handyman program available for residents who need their services. He also informed the captains that the Oldtimers Foundation offers this kind of assistance to their residents in which a handyman comes out to your home to do the necessary work such as; heater adjustment, etc. Later, it was announced by Captain Omar that there's a number where you can call for a handyman. The number is (213) 589 -7900. Captains Juan Pena - 3800 Cortland, Salvador Alatorre - 3185 Oakwood, and Fernando Hernandez - 10788 Barlow had some concerns about their neighborhoods. Captain Mesta suggested that Mr. Pena make his neighbors aware of the Block Watch Program. VII. NEW BUSINESS Chairman Lopez introduced Mr. Kenneth Riley, President of MAD DADS INC. (Men Against Destruction Defending Against Drugs and Social - disorder). Mr. Riley gave brief background information about his organization. His major concern is to stop violence in this community and make it safe for everyone. (see attached sheets for additional information) Chairman Lopez informed everyone that Hollywood and Lynwood are the only two (2) cities in California that have night parades. He would like for the Block Watch Club to get their own float for future parades. VII. PUBLIC ORAL COMMUNICATION Captain Guzman requested that Mr. Lopez give more detailed information on events. Captain Carrillo reported that their was an abandoned car on Olanda Street for several weeks. He would like for Deputy Moore to check this issue. Captain Guzman reported disturbances on Euclid and Peach such as; gun shooting, drugs, etc. Captain Evans reported that loud parties are ` starfing - to begin Burton Street. This happens every weekend between the hours of 4 p.m. to 12:00 midnight. Captain Evans would like to know what can she do to stop this problem. Deputy Moore advised her of the proper procedures. Also Captain Santillan gave Captain Evans written information that she can follow to get this problem resolved. IK. BLOCK CAPTAINS ORAL COMMUNICATION Chairman Lopez read the Block Watch Club mailing list to see if these individuals were still living at their current address. Some of the names were recognized by the Block Captains. He also announced that if anyone see's any of the Block Captains mentioned above, to please inform them that it is very important to attend the meetings. Captain Evans had some concerns about mailing list being read. Captain Evans suggested that letters should go out to Block Captains asking them if they are still interested in being a captain. If they're not interested to take them off the mailing list. it was announced that Ed Fachecu is nospitalized in the Downey Community Hospital. X .
