ADJOURNMENT 4' 0 0 BLOCK WATCH CAPTAINS Regular Meeting February 27, 1996 MINUTES The Block Watch Captains met for a special membership meeting on Tuesday, February 27, 1996, 6:30 p.m. at Bateman Hall, 11331 Ernestine Avenue, Lynwood, California. Fourteen (14) Block Watch Captains were in attendance. Staff present was Jim Given, Project Manager Deputy David Haney of Century Sheriff's Station was also present. I. CALL TO ORDER Mr Adolfo .? nnez ChatrperQ-o1- called-*..-- Mack uich Captain's meeting to order at 6:45 p m. t IL INVOCATION Chairman Lopez read prayer poem. III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Deputy Dave Haney led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES It was MOVED by Captain Percy Brown, SECONDED by Captain Maria Santillian CARRIED unanimously to approve the minutes as distributed of the Special Meeting, January 30, 1996. V. REPORT BY STAFF Mr Jim Given gave an overview of the events that were scheduled for February and indicated that tickets for the Unity Dinner, March 8th were available to purchase at the City Hall. VI. OLD BUSINESS For the Captains in attendance identification, pictures were taken. I VII. NEW BUSINESS Percy Brown spoke in reference to the Black History Program. He was concerned about the attendance for such good events. Captain Evans suggested to relocate the Gospel Programs to a local church for better attendance. Captain Brown reminded all about the Unity Dinner He would like to see the Block Captains purchase a table. VIII. PUBLIC ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Deputy David Haney spoke on crime statistics. He passed out a map and a crime statistical report. Captain Brown asked if total sheet could include last year's total. During the discussion, various issues regarding a particular block on Alma Street was discussed. Mr Mike Gibson for Assemblyman's Tucker's office provided handouts, a discussion and question period about the closing of the Employment Development Department in Compton. The number to call is 310) 639 -1610 or 310) 412 -6400 for Assemblyman Tucker's office. IX. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS BY BLOCK CAPTAINS Captain Evans gave a report on Affirmative Action. She passed out information in both English and Spanish. She recommended a "grass roots" plan of attack to get the work out about its benefit. She told the members if they would like a representative from the groan endeavoring to support Affirmative action that they could contact the Affirmative Action Project at 310) 608 -2652, Ruth McBride. Chairman Lopez requested information on the Ohhh Christmas Tree Program. Captain Brown requested the issue be given to the Planning committee. Chairman Lopez passed gavel to Vice - chairperson to report on committee. Planning and Earthquake committees had no report and Chairman Lopez reported on the Membership committee. Alma Street Block Watch is interested in California Civil Code 34 79. The concerns on Alma Street, staff refereed them to the Community Development Department. There were introductions of new block getting a Block Watch Program started. Captain Guzman questioned the robberies that were on Santa Fe /Josephine between Cedar /Long Beach Blvd. Deputy Haney informed them about the armed robberies. It was mentioned that vendors are parked in red at St. Phillip Neri church. Captain Brown reminded committee members to do their jobs and more individuals must get involved. Chairman Lopez requested a copy of the current mailing list for Block Captains. X.
