COMMISSION ORAL COMMUNICATIONS ADJOURNMENT Motion to adjourn to the regularly scheduled meeting on November 20, 1996 at 5:00 p m in the City Hall Council Chambers, 11330 Bullis Road, City of Lynwood, CA 90262. corres \sf11294 a CITY OF LYNWOOD COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 18, 1996 MEETING The Community Affairs Commission meeting of September 18, 1996 was called to order by Chairperson David Litsinger at 5:00 p.m. The pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Bette Espeseth. Roll Call of Commissioners present: Chairperson Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner 'Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner )avid Litsinger Bette Espeseth Yolanda Bays Ann Fields Lucille Walker Barbara Newton Lorna Hawkins - absent Staff present: Mr. Ralph Davis Mr. Davis certified the posting of the agenda. Commissioner Espeseth motioned to approve the minutes of the August 21, 1996 meeting., Commissioner Walker seconded the motion. INFORMATION ITEMS Mr. Ralph Davis reported that at the City Council meeting the purchasing of two (2) trucks was approved. The trucks will be used for the Sheriff's Department Volunteer Program. Volunteers and staff members will be able to use the trucks. A presentation of the Bone Marrow Program will be held on September 24, 1996 for the Block Watch Captains Program. SCHEDULED MATTERS Mr. Davis reported on the HRMAC meeting that was held on September 12, 1996. The purpose of this meeting is to research information for the conflict resolution -task force. HRMAC is putting together a Task Force Directory which will include the Councilmembers, City Manager, Sheriff's Department, Churches, businesses, etc. Mr. Davis opened the topic for discussion by asking the Commissioners who else should be recommended to be on the Task Force Directory. Commissioner Bays recommended that the Firechief be included and Commissioner Fields stated that the Task Force should be diverse. Mr. Davis reported on the Lynwood Community Partnership Coalition meeting that was held on September 11, 1996. He stated that there are many people against the advertising of alcohol. He stated that in this community advertising of alcoholic beverages is greater than in many other communities Unfortunately many musicians are ,being ,paid to help advertise alcohol. MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 18, 1996 MEETING PAGE 2 The Community 10,000 Program will be held on September 27, 1996. There will be a press conference held in front of City Hall. On September 28, 1996 there will be a musical extravaganza to promote the program. The Red Cross will be on hand to help administer the blood test needed The program was created to educate people about being Bone Marrow Donors. There is a big need for minorities on the Bone Marrow Donor list. The Southeast Community Health Conference will be held on September 19, 1996 at Bateman Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. PUBLIC ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None COMMISSION ORALS Chairperson Litsinger reported on the Habitat for Humanity Program and what their purpose is. The Habitat for Humanity Program was established to help those in need of housing. There will be a meeting at Wilson Elementary on September 24, 1996 at 6:30 p.m. Commissioner Espeseth reported that the Habitat for Humanity Program have built 50,000 homes worldwide. She also stated that their will be a Job Fair on October 9, 1996 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Bateman Hall. Commissioner Espeseth also reported that many senior citizens are upset because the cost of lunches has gone up. Commissioner Fields stated that the Lynwood AARP Chapter is called Wise Step Compton College is celebrating Latino Awareness Month. Many events are scheduled throughout the month of September. Commissioner Walker announced that the Library has asked her to help recruit parents and their children to obtain Library cards. Commissioner Bays stated that she attended the September 16, 1996 program and enjoyed it very much. She stated that many local businesses were very upset because of the loss of business. Commissioner Bays also mentioned that there are too many prostitutes on Atlantic and would like to know what could be done about it. Chairperson David Litsinger was given information on Citizens for Safe Neighborhood Parks. Chairperson Litsinger asked for a motion from the Commissioners to endorse the program. Commissioner Espeseth motioned to endorse Citizens for Safe Neighborhood Parks and Commissioner Fields seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 6:00 p.m. by Chairperson David Litsinger The next regularly scheduled meeting will be on Wednesday, November 20, 1996 at 5:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.
