Report on AARP meeting PUBLIC ORAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION ORAL COMMUNICATIONS ADJOURNMENT 1996 Motion to adjourn to the regularly scheduled meeting on April 17, 1996 at 5:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 11330 Bullis Road, City of Lynwood, CA 90262. c.r \an 1294.a CITY OF LYNWOOD COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 21, 1996 MEETING The Community Affairs Commission meeting of February 21, 1996 was called to order by Chairperson David Litsinger at 5:00 p.m. The pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Bette Espeseth. Roll Call of Commissioners present: Chairperson Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner David Litsinger Bette Espeseth Yolanda Bays (absent) Ann Fields Lucille Walker Barbara Newton Lorna Hawkins (absent) Staff present: Mr. Ralph Davis Mr. Davis certified the posting of the agenda. Commissioner Espeseth motioned to approve the minutes of the February 21, 1996 meeting. Commissioner Newton seconded the motion. The Commission agrees and the minutes were so ordered. INFORMATION ITEMS Mr. Ralph Davis reported on the Block Watch Captains. He informed the Commission that elections were held and Mr. Adolf Lopez was elected President, Mrs. Maria Santiana was elected Vice - President and Mr. Percy Brown was elected Secretary. The Block Watch Captains have their meetings every fourth (4th) Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Ralph Davis handed out a package regarding a new program called Goal 2000 which was presented to the clergy by the Lynwood Unified School District. Mr. Davis passed out a report approved by the City Council regarding the Olympic Torch Relay program. This program originally began as the 5 City Torch Relay Program but now it has been incorporated into the actual Olympic Torch Relay. Mr. Davis also reported on a proposal regarding loitering. Too many kids are hanging out in the wrong places when they should be in school. 0 0 COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 21, 1996 MEETING PAGE 2 SCHEDULED MATTERS Mr. Davis reported on the CPRS Conference he attended in San Diego. This was a major conference for the Recreation Department. There were various workshops which were very productive. The theme for the conference was "Reinventing Relationships in our Neighborhood ". An important topic discussed was that of racial problems. All nine (9) of the Elementary Schools in Lynwood are participating in the Black History Month "Read to Celebrate" Program. This, program consists of a Essay, Quiz and Coloring Contest based on the readings in the "Read to Celebrate" Coloring Book. On February 22, 1996 at 6:00 p.m. the awards program will be held at Bateman Hall. On Friday, February 23, 1996 at 6:30 p.m. in Bateman Hall a Karaoke Competition and Talent Search will be held. On Sunday, February 25, 1996 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. a Gospel Fest will be held at Bateman Hall honoring the late Cassietta George. Mr. Davis handed out information from the Los Angeles County Human Relations regarding the an interracial consortium. They meet every second Thursday of each month. This program will help improve public human relations. Mr. Davis stated that the City Council would like for the Community Affairs Commission to become active with this program. Mr. Davis asked for a motion to approve this item, Commissioner Espeseth motioned to approve the item and Commissioner Fields seconded the motion. The Commission agrees and the motion is approved. PUBLIC ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None COMMISSION ORALS Commissioner Espeseth wanted to know whether or not the lunch program was still being held. Commissioner Espeseth also reported that the Salvation Army is helping those in need to pay their utility bills. She is also celebrating her 22nd year with the Salvation Army. Commissioner Fields reported on her trip to Jerusalem. Commissioner Newton invited the Commission to see the Black History displays at Will Rogers Elementary School. w ! COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY 21, 1996 MEETING PAGE 3 Chairperson Litsinger reported on the Mathathon Competition held every year for the elementary schools in Lynwood. This years winner was Washington Elementary School. The Loving Cup presentation will be held on February 27, 1996. The meeting was adjourned at 6:10 p.m. by Chairperson David Litsinger. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be on Wednesday, March 20, 1996 at 5:00 p.m.
