The regular meeting of the Women's Commission of the City of Lynwood
California was held on Tuesday November 12, 1996, at 3:00 p m. , at the City
Manager's Conference room of the Lynwood City Hall. The agenda was duly
posted as prescribed by the at Brown Act.
In attendance:
LWC Commissioners:
Mary Sue Lewis, Chair
Dr Betty Jackson
Ethel Pacheco
Verna Culp
Also present were
Councilman Louis Heine
Sandra Morales, minutes clerk
I. ADMINISTRATIVE ITEM
A. Meeting was called to order by Chair Mary Sue Lewis. Minutes of
previous meeting was approved with necessary corrections.
Il. DISCUSSION
A. "Gifts of Love" project at the Women & Children Center
As discussed in the previous LWC regular meeting held of October 8,
1996 the LWC decided that the "2nd Annual Gifts of Love" event be
held on December 19, 1996 from 1000 a.m. to 12noon, at the Women &
Children Center Councilman Heine reported that the Center is still under
the same administration with the same progam goals. Staff liaison, Carol
de Jesus will check with the Center for feasibility of holding the event on
the 19th of December The commission decided to serve cake and punch
as refreshments. City of Lynwood staff person, Marilyn Cabaret agreed to
dress up as Bimbo the Clown. Commissioner Culp made a motion for the
LWC commissioners to donate some money to buy gifts for the women at
the Center The commissioners unanimously agreed. Commissioner Culp
also asked that the event be properly advertised in the Lynwood
Inperspective Commissioner Dr Jackson suggested for the staff liaison
to find out the number of children & women housed at the center The
final arrangements were:
1 Date: December 19, 1996
2. Refreshments being served: cake & punch
3. Donations to buy the women gifts
4 Toys will come from council to the children
5. Bimbo the clown (Marilyn Cabaret)

Discussion item tabled for next regular meeting to be held December
10, 1996.
III. FUTURE PROJECTS
A. Youth Group at Lynwood High School
Commissioner Dr Jackson informed the commission that she received
a call from Principal Beverly of the Lynwood High School in reference to
meeting with her to set up a Women's Youth Group at the High School.
He suggested to her to use the cheerleaders to organize the group
Dr Jackson will be meeting with him at a later date She will keep the
commission updated.
IV COMMISSION ORALS
A. Commissioner Dr Jackson informed the commissioners that a copy of
the proclamation proclaiming October as Breast Cancer Month was
sent to the NACW President Camille Murphy The commission thanked
Dr. Jackson for writing the proclamation.
B Commissioner Culp informed the commission that AARP will be
holding a meeting on Thursday, November 14, 1996 concerning jobs for
the aging. She urges the commissioners to invite all seniors they know
She also informed the commissioners that in January of 1997 AARP will
be having their mobile unit for Mammograms at Bateman Hall. More
information will be printedin the December issues of the Lynwood
Inperspective and Journal.
C Chairperson Mary Sue Lewis thanked the commission for all their
support in her time of despair
