MINUTES
November 26, 1996
1 The Recreation and Parks Commission meeting of November
26, 1996 was called to order at 6:00 p m by Vice
Chairperson Bette Espeseth
2. & 3. The Invocation was led by Chairperson Lara and the
Pledge of Allegiance was recited by Commissioner
Espeseth

5 Mr. Jim Given, Project Manager of the Recreation and
Community Services Department certified the posting of
the agenda by the City Clerk
6 Vice Chairperson Espeseth called for review and approval
of the minutes for the Recreation and Parks Commission
meeting held on October 22, 1996 Commissioner Espeseth
motioned to approve the minutes, Commissioner Lara
seconded the motion, all were in agreement and the
minutes were approved

9 CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT
There will be a Classic Car Show at the Community /Transit
Center on Saturday, November 30, 1996 starting at 10 00
a.m and running until 6:00 p m There will be'classic
bicycles, clowns, music, games and food This event is
being sponsored by Classic Memories Car Club, Community
10,000 Bone Marrow Drive Program, the American Red Cross
along with the City of Lynwood.
The City of Lynwood is proud to announce the debut and
grand opening of the Lynwood Certified Farmers Market on
Tuesday, December 3, 1996. The market will be open every
Tuesday from 12 noon until 5:00 p.m at Mervyn Dymally
Park An array of fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, fish,
shrimp, crab, nuts, and baked goods will be available for
sale from various vendors.

A BEAUTIFICATION TOUR AWARDS
Commissioner Mendoza and Project Manager, Jim Given
presented the Beautification Tour Awards to ten
finalists The top three were awarded plaques and
the rest given certificates for their efforts at
beautifying the City of Lynwood Photos of the
winners and the Commissioners were taken
B. COMMISSIONERS DINNER
The annual Commissioners Christmas Dinner is being
held on Thursday, December 5, 1996 at Bateman Hall
at 6:00 p m
C CHRISTMAS PARADE REPORT
The Grand Marshall for this year's Annual Candy Cane
Lane Christmas Parade is Olympic medalist Lisa
Leslie This year's parade is scheduled to march by
on Friday, December 13, 1996 beginning at 7 00 p.m
The judging area will be located near the
Community /Transit Center at 3798 Martin Luther King
Jr Boulevard.
D COMMUNITY SERVICES DAY
Community Services Day is fast approaching on
Saturday, December 21 Various community
organizations will come together to provide
information and food /gift donations to needy Lynwood
families Join us on the outdoor basketball courts
at Mervyn Dymally Park at 8:30 a.m on Saturday,
December 21, 1996 and help make this year's event a
big success.

CAR SHOW IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE THANKSGIVING WEEKEND IN LYNWOOD
The City of Lynwood is proud to announce that it will be hosting a
Classic Car Show. This exciting, upcoming event is being co-
sponsored by Classic Memories Car Club, Community 10,000 Bone
Marrow Drive Program, Red Cross as well as the Lynwood Chamber of
Commerce. The event will be held on Saturday, November 30, 1996
between the hours of 10 00 a m and 6 00 p m The location of the
event is the Community /Transit Center Parking Lot, 3798 Martin
Luther King Jr. Blvd (corner of Martin Luther King Jr Blvd , and
Bullis Road, Lynwood)
If you would like to come and see classic low rider cars from all
over the State of California, this will be the place to be There
will also be; classic bicycles, clowns, music, games and food
There is also a rumor that Radio Station KRLA's own "Huggie Boy"
will be in attendance at this event Magazines including; Low
Rider Street Customs Orlie's Low Ridincf as well as Scrape will
be covering this event along with numerous other local cable
programs and other media representatives Most importantly there
will be an opportunity to be tested and become a bone marrow donor

The City of Lynwood is endeavoring to register 10,000 persons in
the bone marrow donor registry between September, 1996 and
September, 1997 This is an important step in that effort.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, November 30, 1996 in the

LYNWOOD FARMERS MARKET
OPENING FOR BUSINESS - DECEMBER 3
The City of Lynwood is proud to announce the debut and Grand Opening of the
LYNWOOD CERTIFIED FARMERS MARKET on Tuesday, December 3, 1996 The
Lynwood Farmers Market will officially open for business on this date from 12 noon to
5 00 p.m. at Mervyn M. Dymally Congressional Park, 3798 East Martin Luther King Jr
Boulevard. The Market area will be stationed in the parking lot at Dymally Park
connected to Cesar E. Chavez Lane and Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. This exciting
program is cosponsored by Hub City Certified Farmers Market and Sunrise Youth
Service Center Inc.
On December 3 and each Tuesday thereafter, shoppers will be treated to an array of fresh
vegetables, fruits, eggs, fish, shrimp, crab, nuts and baked goods, sold directly from the
farmers and vendors. There will also be a Flea Market next to the Farmers Market.
Holiday gift items and exhibition booths will also be featured each Tuesday
The Market will not accept food stamps. So make plans to come by and browse through
this delightfully planned, festive, outdoor market on Tuesday, December 3
Please also look forward to entertainment and holiday items, as well as a grand opening
celebration in upcoming weeks.

FREE PEPSI HOTSHOT BASKETBALL SKILLS CONTEST
(Registration Has Been Extended)
The City of Lynwood and The Pepsi Hotshot Youth Basketball Skills Contest celebrates
its 21st anniversary The citywide contest is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, December
3, Wednesday, December 4 and Thursday, December 5, 1996, at 6 p.m., at the
Lynwood Community Transit Center Gymnasium located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr
Boulevard here in Lynwood. The Contest is made possible through the County of Los
Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation and the Pepsi Cola Company
This year boys and girls bom between the years of 1981 and 1988 are eligible to
participate. The contest tests a child's speed, dribbling, shooting, and rebounding skills.
There are eight categories of competition in four separate age groups.
The age groups are listed as follows:
Group (1) Children born 1987 and 1988
Group (2): Children born 1985 and 1986
Group (3): Children born 1983 and 1984
Group (4): Children born 1981 and 1982
Agency Championships will be held Wednesday and Thursday, December 18 and 19, at
6 p.m. at the Lynwood Community Center Gymnasium, 3798 Martin Luther King Jr
Boulevard.
First place agency winners will advance to the Los Angeles Area Finals scheduled for
Saturday, January 11, 1997, at the South Gate Sports Center and will receive their Pepsi

Hotshot T -shirt and have an opportunity to win medals, premiums, and NBA game
tickets.
Registration forms are available at the Lynwood Community Transit Center Gymnasium
and can be picked up between 3.30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The City of Lynwood and the Lynwood Sports Association
present Holiday Basketball Camp for girls five (5) through
seventeen (17) on Saturday, December 14, 1996 from 10:00 a.m.
to 2:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 21 and 28, 1996. The cost
for the camp is $10.00 per person (includes a T -shirt
and refreshments).
A special guest appearance by the Olympic Gold Medal Winner,
Lisa Leslie, will be the highlight of the days activities on
Saturday, December 14, 1996.
Lisa has been a great basketball player throughout her high
school and college years. She was honored as a National Player
in both high school and college. She is currently awaiting
the upcoming Women's Professional Basketball Association Summer
League where she will make her debut.
This is a must attend camp for all young girls interested in
basketball. There will be other outstanding players and coaches

to assist throughout the three (3) day weekend camp.
Registration is currently being taken at the Lynwood Community/
Transit Center located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
in Lynwood. Registration hours are Monday through Thursday
7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. and from
3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

THE CITY OF LYNWOOD IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT IT WILL BE HOSTING A
FIRST OF A KIND PRESENTATION OF THE WORK AND PROGRAMS OF A UNIQUE
CONSORTIUM LOCATED HERE IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY.
THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY ON HUMAN RELATIONS MUTUAL ASSISTANCE
CONSORTIUM (HRMAC) IS A GROUP OF VISIONARY AGENCIES WHICH HAVE COME
TOGETHER TO SHARE EXPERTISE, RESOURCES, IDEAS AND TO DEVELOP
CONSISTENCY IN INTER RACIAL AND INTER CULTURAL PROBLEM SOLVING AND
CRISIS INTERVENTION. THIS CONSORTIUM WAS INITIATED BY THE LOS
ANGELES COUNTY COMMISSION ON HUMAN RELATIONS.

LYNWOOD TO HOST: COMMUNITY SERVICES DAY
The City of Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department is
proud to announce that it will be hosting its annual Community
Services Day. All available community services and groups are
invited out on this holiday oriented day to promote, offer and
expose their particular community services to the residents of
Lynwood
Scheduled for the event is holiday entertainment by local singing
and dancing groups. The event will also feature the City of
Lynwood Christmas Food and Gift Relief Program benefiting local
needy families This program helps needy families during the
holiday season in the form of Christmas trees, and toy and food
donations Depending upon the number of eligible applications
received, commodities will be provided on a first come, first
served basis If donations exceed eligible applications,
commodities will then be distributed to families attending the
Community Services Day who successfully complete an application,
also on a first come, first served basis An application for this
program can be picked up at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center
(3798 Martin Luther King, Jr Boulevard) as well as all other
recreation facilities

All local residents and service groups are invited to attend and
participate in the Community Services Day to be held on Saturday,
December 21, 1996 from 10 a m until 2 p m. at the Mervyn Dymally
Park outdoor basketball courts next to the Lynwood Community Center
parking lot located at 3798 Martin Luther King, Jr Boulevard, in
Lynwood
The Recreation and Community Services Department is also seeking
donations of Christmas Trees, toys, and non - perishable food to be
given away during the December 21st Christmas Food and Gift Relief
Program If your group would like to volunteer or have an
information booth at the event or if you would like to apply for
the Gift and Food Relief Program, please contact the Recreation and
