April 23, 1996
The Recreation and Parks Commission meeting of April 23, 1996 was
called to order by Chairperson Martini The Invocation was led by
Commissioner Lara and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by
Commissioner Espeseth.

Mr Ralph Davis, Director of the Recreation and Community Services
Department certified the posting of the agenda by the City Clerk.
Chairperson Martini called for review and approval on the minutes
for the Recreation and Parks Commission meeting held on March 26,
1996. Commissioner Espeseth motioned to approve the minutes,
Commissioner Mendoza seconded the motion, all were in agreement and
the motion was passed
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS GROUP "NUEVO AMANECER"
A local Alcoholics Anonymous group known as "Nuevo Amanecer" is
requesting the waiver of fees for the use of Bateman Hall to
celebrate their 18th Anniversary on Sunday, October 27, 1996 from
1 00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M.
The Commission unanimously requested that the matter be tabled
until a member of "Nuevo Amanecer" can appear before the Commission
to represent their organization's intentions

CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT

The annual Easter Egg Hunt was a success Approximately 400 people
were in attendance Candy and baskets were given to the winners
The Ministerial Association held an Easter Sunday Sunrise Service.
The All City Track Meet was held on April 13. Elementary school
teachers and staff assisted with this event. Councilman Heine was
present to hand out awards
The annual peace march sponsored by Drive -by Agony was held this
month One- thousand people were in attendance by the time the
marchers reached Los Angeles.
The SCMAF Track Meet will take place on Saturday, 4/20 - over 450
agencies are involved
The City of Lynwood will participate in a 5 -City Torch Relay Race
on Saturday, 4/27
SCHEDULED MATTERS
BEAUTIFICATION TOUR AWARDS PRESENTATION
Ten outstanding residential properties were chosen to receive
awards during this year's Beautification Tour. The homes were
chosen from the neighborhood surrounding both Lindbergh and Wilson
Elementary Schools The Recreation and Parks Commission members
served as judges for this annual event The top three homes chosen
by the Commission were awarded plaques for their efforts in
beautifying the City of Lynwood. Seven other homeowners received
Beautification Award Certificates for their efforts
Several of the winners were present to accept their awards and have
take photos with the Recreation and Parks Commission and Lynwood
Councilman, Louis J. Heine
Present were:

Clemis Brown - Plaque Winner
Representative for J. Hooyenga - Certificate Winner
Brenda Watts - Plaque Winner
Chairperson Martini called for a recess from the regular agenda to
present awards to several of the Five -City Torch Relay Sponsors
present, such as Errick Lee for Vasilios and Maggie Godoy for the
United Parents of Lynwood. Councilman Heine, Ms Roberta Mack and
Mr. Mark Flores remarked on the success of the program, and the
official City of Lynwood Olympic Torch Relay Banner was unveiled.

Group photos of twelve (12) out of the fourteen (14) 5 -City Olympic
Torch Relay runners representing the City of Lynwood were taken,
along with Councilman Heine, Mr Flores, and Ms Mack, who was
instrumental in bringing this event into fruition.

PROP "A" PROPOSAL - STATUS
The Recreation and Community Services Department is hard at work
preparing proposals on several different types of grant projects to
garner Prop A monies. These should be ready for review by the
August 1, 1996 deadline date
RECREATION DEPARTMENT BUDGET PROPOSAL - STATUS
The Department has begun preparations for the 96 -97 fiscal year
budget. Concerns on how Prop 62 will affect the City's budget will
be considered in the preparation of this years budget

Troop # 513 is organizing a special end -of- the -year ceremony for all the

For these reason we would like to request the use of Bateman Hall without
charge. We will need to accomodate aproximately 50 people.

THE LYNWOOD ROYALETTES ARE GOING OUT WITH A BANG!
The City of Lynwood was represented well by the Lynwood Royalettes
at Lemon Park in the City of Compton on Saturday, May 4, 1996 at
Compton's annual Drill Team Competition.
The Royalettes Drill Team and Drum Squad both won second place
trophies in their respective divisions. Their trophies are on
display at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center located at 3798
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Lynwood.
The Drill Team season will officially end on Saturday, June 22,
1996. Registration for the 1996/1997 season will begin on Monday,
August 12, 1996 at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center.

SWEET WATER BLUES
The City of Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department
is hosting a trip for Senior Citizens on Saturday, May 11, 1996 at
2:00 p.m. to see "Sweet Water Blues ". The show is being performed
for one weekend only at the historic and newly renovated 5 *4
Ballroom located at 310 West 54th Street in the City of Los
Angeles.
This show will take you back to the early days of the "blues" when
Monk, Dizzy, Coltrane and "Muddy Waters" were the show stoppers of
their era.
The cost for the trip is $12 00 per person CASH ONLY and includes
transportation. Registration for this trip is now being taken
and will end on Tuesday, May 7, 1996. Registration is taken
between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., 12:00 noon to 2:00

BIG BEAR MOUNTAIN LAKE ESCAPE
On Friday, June 7, 1996 from 9:00 a m. to 6:00 p m. the City of
Lynwood will be hosting a trip for Senior Citizens ages 55 and

sight seeing and browsing through the charming shops and boutiques
in town. You will find everything from antique stores to gift
shops and ice cream parlors. The highlight of the afternoon comes
when we board the Big Bear Queen for a delightful afternoon cruise
on Big Bear Lake.
Please join us on our mountain lake escape. The cost for this trip
is $24.00 per person CASH ONLY and lunch is included. Registration
begins Monday, April 29, 1996 and ends Thursday, May 23, 1996.

AQUA AEROBICS EXERCISE MOVES TO MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY
The very popular Aqua Aerobics exercise period has resumed a summer
schedule of Monday and Wednesday evenings from 8:00 p.m. to 8:45
p.m. This very popular adult program is designed for both the
working person who just wants to enjoy some light to medium
exercise and the senior citizen who desires a more exhilarating
exercise period. The program is open to male and female adults
over the age of 18 years, and is entirely conducted in shallow
water. This exercise period does not involve swimming nor is
swimming a requirement. The cost for the Aqua Aerobics class is
$1.00 per visit.
The current Monday and Wednesday 8:00 p.m. schedule will remain in
effect through September 9, 1996. The only schedule difference
will be on Friday, May 31, 1996. This day will replace the
preceding Monday (Memorial Day).
The Aqua Aerobics exercise classes are conducted at the Natatorium

THE MARLIN SWIM CLUB RETURNS TO THE NATATORIUM
The City of Lynwood Marlin Swim Club is proud to announce the team
has resumed its swimming schedule in preparation of the 1996 swim
year.
In cooperation with the City of Lynwood Recreation and Community
Services Department, the "Marlin Swim Club exemplifies hots
successfully the program can be accomplished through parental
participation ", says Jim Coles, Aquatic Director.
The swim team has been out of the water since the pool closure in
October, 1995, and while they did attend two (2) swim meets during
this six (6) month period, the swimmers are more than happy to get
their feet wet once again. Understandably, out of top condition,
the 1996 Marlin Swim Club is practicing daily from 5:00 p.m. to
7:00 p.m. Competitions are conducted on the weekends.
Practices are conducted at the Marlin home pool located at 3770
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Lynwood. The "Natatorium" swim
complex is an indoor 50 -meter swimming pool complete with separate
locker rooms, an enclosed patio area and is open to the public for
recreation swimming, swim lessons and pool rentals.

The tryouts for the swim team are conducted each Monday at 5:00
p.m. All interested swimmers who are between the ages of 5 to 18
have experienced and completed at least the intermediate level of
a swim lesson program (level 5 - Red Cross) are encouraged to
tryout. Please report to the front desk and ask to speak with the
swim coach. Bring a proper swim suit and protective goggles (no
mask) if desired. Testing will vary, and is limited to
approximately 20 minutes. Upon the completion of testing, each
person will meet with the swim coach who will either approve the
swimmers level or identify which swim class /level the student
qualifies for.

happy to announce that the Lynwood Natatorium located at 3770 East
Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard is now open for public
recreational swimming The "Natatorium" Swim Complex consists of
an indoor, 50- meter, Olympic -sized swimming pool - equipped with
separate locker rooms, an enclosed sun deck, as well as an
experienced staff to assist with your aquatic needs.
The public recreational swim hours are scheduled for your
convenience. The pool is open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
afternoons from 3:00 p.m. to 5 00 p.m. and each Tuesday and
Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon
swim periods are scheduled from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Due to the
large crowds we have experienced each Saturday afternoon, an
additional period will be added each Saturday. Effective Saturday,
May 4, 1996 the pool will also be open from 3:00 p m to 5:00 p.m.
The cost remains an economical $1.00 for adults, 18 years and above
and .75 cents for children from birth to 17 years. For your safety
we have a participant only policy during the recreation swim
periods - no spectators are allowed

So please bring your swim suit, consisting of either a one or two -
piece suit without sleeves for women or swim trunks with a
drawstring or elastic waist for men. Trunks must be hemmed above
the knee, and not have zippers, buttons or pockets. These
requirements are for safety reasons. Also for the safety of young
children, we require that any child under 45" in height be
accompanied by an adult 18 years or older.

MARLIN SWIM CLUB LOOKING FOR ADVANCED SWIMMERS
The Lynwood Marlin Swim Club in cooperation with the City of
Lynwood Department of Recreation and Community Services would like
to invite all advanced swimmers above the age of ten (10) years,
to challenge themselves by becoming a member of the Marlin Swim
Club
Testing is available each Monday afternoon from 5:00 p.m. to 5:40
p.m. All you need to do is go to the home of the Marlins - 3770
Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
Bring your swim suit and goggles (if you desire) and report to the
swim coach and he will direct you into the testing area. A maximum
of ten - minutes is necessary. In the event you require some
improvement in any area of your swimming skills the coach will
identify the area(s) in which you require improvement and direct
you into the proper swim class
For persons successfully completing this "try -out" the team
welcomes you! Practices are conducted each weekday, Monday through
Friday from 5 00 p m. to 7:00 p.m. Swim Meets are conducted on
weekends Parents are a big part in any childs success and the
primary reason for the swim club's success is parent participation.

The Summer of 1996 will represent the City's 75th Anniversary, so
what better way to celebrate than with a refreshing evening swim
during the Tuesday- Thursday, 7 -9 p.m. public recreation swim
period? Or workout at your own pace during the Monday and
Wednesday evening (8:00 p.m.) Aqua Aerobics class.
Do you have a child between the ages of 6 months - 17 years old who
can't swim? Parents - don't take such a dangerous risk! Swim

MOTHERS DAY SWIM SET FOR SUNDAY MAY 12, 1996
The City of Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department is
proud to announce the opportunity to surprise Mom before taking her
out for that special dinner. The facility will be open for a
special Mother's Day Afternoon Swim on Sunday, May 12, 1996 from
12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. As a gift to our Mothers, all children
accompanying their Mother to swim, will result in Mom 'swimming
free! That's correct, all Mothers accompanied by a child will be
admitted at no cost. The regular fee of 75 cents applies to all
children birth to 17 years of age, and adults 18 years and above
pay only $1.00. Fear not Dad, your special day is scheduled for
next month, Sunday, June 16, 1996.
The Natatorium Swim Complex is located at 3770 Martin Luther King
Jr. Boulevard between St. Francis Medical Center and Bullis Road,
