Roll Call of Commissioners: Chairperson Mendoza - Present Commissioner Martini - Present Commissioner Lopez - Absent Commissioner Lara - Present Commissioner Espeseth - Present Mr Ralph Davis, Director of the Recreation and Community Services Department certified the posting of the agenda by the City Clerk. Chairperson Martini called for review and approval on the minutes for the Recreation and Parks Commission meeting held on March 26, 1996. Commissioner Espeseth motioned to approve the minutes, Commissioner Mendoza seconded the motion, all were in agreement and the motion was passed ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS GROUP "NUEVO AMANECER" A local Alcoholics Anonymous group known as "Nuevo Amanecer" is requesting the waiver of fees for the use of Bateman Hall to celebrate their 18th Anniversary on Sunday, October 27, 1996 from 1 00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. The Commission unanimously requested that the matter be tabled until a member of "Nuevo Amanecer" can appear before the Commission to represent their organization's intentions MONTHLY STAFF REPORTS A Facility Usage Report - Attached B. Personnel Report - None E April 23, 1996 Page 2 CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT 0 The annual Easter Egg Hunt was a success Approximately 400 people were in attendance Candy and baskets were given to the winners The Ministerial Association held an Easter Sunday Sunrise Service. The All City Track Meet was held on April 13. Elementary school teachers and staff assisted with this event. Councilman Heine was present to hand out awards The annual peace march sponsored by Drive -by Agony was held this month One- thousand people were in attendance by the time the marchers reached Los Angeles. The SCMAF Track Meet will take place on Saturday, 4/20 - over 450 agencies are involved The City of Lynwood will participate in a 5 -City Torch Relay Race on Saturday, 4/27 SCHEDULED MATTERS BEAUTIFICATION TOUR AWARDS PRESENTATION Ten outstanding residential properties were chosen to receive awards during this year's Beautification Tour. The homes were chosen from the neighborhood surrounding both Lindbergh and Wilson Elementary Schools The Recreation and Parks Commission members served as judges for this annual event The top three homes chosen by the Commission were awarded plaques for their efforts in beautifying the City of Lynwood. Seven other homeowners received Beautification Award Certificates for their efforts Several of the winners were present to accept their awards and have take photos with the Recreation and Parks Commission and Lynwood Councilman, Louis J. Heine Present were: Heriberto Sauceda - Certificate Winner Clemis Brown - Plaque Winner Representative for J. Hooyenga - Certificate Winner Brenda Watts - Plaque Winner Chairperson Martini called for a recess from the regular agenda to present awards to several of the Five -City Torch Relay Sponsors present, such as Errick Lee for Vasilios and Maggie Godoy for the United Parents of Lynwood. Councilman Heine, Ms Roberta Mack and Mr. Mark Flores remarked on the success of the program, and the official City of Lynwood Olympic Torch Relay Banner was unveiled. • • April 23, 1996 Page 3 SCHEDULED MATTERS - Continued Group photos of twelve (12) out of the fourteen (14) 5 -City Olympic Torch Relay runners representing the City of Lynwood were taken, along with Councilman Heine, Mr Flores, and Ms Mack, who was instrumental in bringing this event into fruition. These should be ready for review by the August 1, 1996 deadline date RECREATION DEPARTMENT BUDGET PROPOSAL - STATUS The Department has begun preparations for the 96 -97 fiscal year budget. The swim team has been out of the water since the pool closure in October, 1995, and while they did attend two (2) swim meets during this six (6) month period, the swimmers are more than happy to get their feet wet once again. Understandably, out of top condition, the 1996 Marlin Swim Club is practicing daily from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Competitions are conducted on the weekends. The "Natatorium" swim complex is an indoor 50 -meter swimming pool complete with separate locker rooms, an enclosed patio area and is open to the public for recreation swimming, swim lessons and pool rentals. • • The tryouts for the swim team are conducted each Monday at 5:00 p.m. All interested swimmers who are between the ages of 5 to 18 have experienced and completed at least the intermediate level of a swim lesson program (level 5 - Red Cross) are encouraged to tryout. Testing will vary, and is limited to approximately 20 minutes.
