Roll Call of Commissioners: Chairperson Mendoza - Present Commissioner Martini - Present Commissioner Lopez - Present Commissioner Lara - Present Commissioner Espeseth - Present Mr. Jim Given, Project Manager for the Recreation and Community Services Department certified the posting of the agenda by the City Clerk, Chairperson Mendoza called for a vote on the minutes for the Recreation and Parks Commission meeting held on October 24, 1995. Commissioner Espeseth motioned to approve the minutes, Commissioner Lara seconded the motion, all were in agreement and the motion was passed. LYNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL BOOSTER CLUB Commissioner Martini motions to waive the fee for the use of Bateman Hall by the Lynwood High School Football Booster Club on Sunday, January 14, 1996 from 12 00 p.m. to 7 00 - p m. (Commissioner Lopez arrived late, at 6:15 p m SCHEDULED MATTERS YOUTH CENTER REPORT John Oskoui reported the following on the new Lynwood Youth Center • 0 November 28, 1995 Page 2 YOUTH CENTER REPORT Continued The County of Los Angeles awarded the City of Lynwood with $673 000.00 to utilize in the construction of 7,500 sq feet of space for the new Lynwood Youth Center The community, as well as commissioners gathered together to discuss the type of building desired by the public for use as a youth center. After discussion, all common denominators were incorporated into a final design The one -story building should be complete by October 1996 The building will encompass the area currently occupied by the Park Yard. Shapes and colors were used to enhance the building design Landscaping will buffer the back yard from adjoining residential areas. The structure will have its own parking facility The building entrance and security lighting provide higher visibility and patron safety. The approximate cost of the new building is $70 00 per square foot. The multi -use building will include an activity area, office, classroom, lobby /reception area, and kitchen Mr. Oskoui also reported the following Final details on the concession stand and restrooms for Dymally Park are being worked out. Project will be up for bids in early June, will go to City Council and bid will be awarded. Current construction on the Los Amigos Park Project includes a walkway, half court for basketball and a volley ball court CHRISTMAS PARADE / The City of Lynwood will celebrate the Christmas season with a salute to Baseball by having Dave Frost and Joe Moeller serve as this year's Annual Candy Cane Lane Christmas Parade. November 28, 1995 Page 3 BATEMAN HALL A more decorative, rustic look is being constructed at Bateman Hall_ The current fountain will soon be turned into a pond. COMMISSIONER'S DINNER The annual Commissioner's Dinner is scheduled for 7:00 p m. on Thursday, December 7, 1995 at Bateman'Hall. FEE WAIVER POLICY Chairperson Mendoza voices concerns over Fee Waiver Policy at Bateman Hall. Registration is currently being taken for the following classes: SHOREI -RYU Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. This martial arts self- defense program is open to boys and girls ages 8 years and older. The cost is $35.00 per student for a ten (10) week session. The instructor is John Soltis who is a fourth (4th) degree black belt. Classes will be held at the Lynwood Teen Center located at 11409 Birch Street in Lynwood. BALLET FOLKLORICO - REGIONAL DANCES FROM MEXICO ARE TAUGHT Classes are held Friday from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. for ages 5 - 12 years and from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. for ages 13 - 17 years. The cost is $20.00 per student for a ten (10) week session. The instructor for this class is Anna M. Hall. Classes are held at the Lynwood Community Transit Center located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Lynwood. KENJUTSURYU KARATE Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. through 7:15 p.m. for beginners and from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for advanced. This self - disciplined martial arts program is open for boys and girls ages 5 years and older. The cost for the class is $25.00 per student for a 10 week session. The instructor is Tony Bautista. Classes are held at the Lynwood Community Transit Center. Registration is taken Monday through Thursday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m., 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Lynwood Community Transit Center located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Lynwood. The 1995 Candy Cane Lane Christmas parade will begin at 7:00 p.m on Friday, December 8, 1995. The parade route will begin at the corner of Atlantic and Cortland Avenue. It will then proceed north on Atlantic Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. The parade will proceed west on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the parade's conclusion at Dymally Park CITY OF LYNWOOD SALUTES PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL The 1995 Candy Cane Lane Christmas Parade is honoring "America's Favorite Pastime," the sport of baseball. Literally, millions of boys and girls of all ages participate in this sport on an annual basis The City of Lynwood is particularly honored to have two (2) very special guests participating in this year's Candy Cane Lane Christmas Parade They include former cross town rivals Dave Frost of the California Angels and Joe Moeller of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Dave Frost and Joe Moeller were both starting as well as relief pitchers for their respective teams. Both also pitched on pennant winning teams. Along with these two all star performers we are also honored to have representatives from the Long Beach Riptide Professional Baseball Club, 1995 Western Baseball League Champions The City of Lynwood welcomes you to the wonderful world of minor league baseball, where the game is as much about the fans as it is about the players. Some of this year's participants include: Victor McLaglen Motor Corps - This is an exciting motorcycle drill team that performs stunts and drills on motorcycles. Marching bands from Dominguez High School, Arroyo High School, South Gate City Youth Band, Compton High School, John Glenn High School, as well as our own Hosler Junior High School and Lynwood High School will be participating in this year's parade. Drill teams will be participating from as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada. The Drill Teams that will be participating this year include; Las Vegas Highsteppers Drill Team, La Quienieans Drill Team, Humphry's Avenue School, Sierra Vista Eagles Drill Team, Westside Dominettes Drill Team, Compton Sounders, Trailblazers, Black Diamond Drillettes, and of course our own Lynwood All City Drill Team. Other participants include; Ronald McDonald, Sippo the Clown, KRLA Radio Station, Boy Scouts Pack 191, Equestrian Bill Naylor, Miss Lynwood and her court, Lynwood High School Junior ROTC, Compton High School Junior ROTC, Banning High School Junior ROTC, Lynwood Sports Association Members, as well as various local and regional dignitaries including our own Mayor Byrd and members of the Lynwood City Council including Mayor Pro Tem Louis J. BOULEVARD LYNWOOD, CA 90262 CONTACT: LEO RODRIGUEZ OR MAURICE ROBERSON PHONE #: (310) 886 -0426 1995 ADULT MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP The City of Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department held its 1995 Adult Men's Basketball Championship for Division "C" on Sunday, December 11, 1995 at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center gymnasium. After four (4) days of tournament play, the number one (1) seeded team, Demonteon vs. the number two (2) seeded team Pinky's played in the championship game. Demonteon won the league and Pinky's finished second. This time Pinky's was not to be denied the tournament championship. Demonteon was led by the "C" Division scoring champion Alonso Rios who scored twenty -seven (27) points for Demonteon, but he was overshadowed by Arturo Cardenas who relentlessly drove the ball to the basket for the Pinky's. Arturo made fourteen (14) of seventeen (17) free throws along with twenty -one (21) other points to lead all scorers with thirty -five (35) points and led Pinky's to the Adult Men's Championship of 1995. With a final score of seventy -two (72) to sixty -six (66), before a packed gymnasium. The teams displayed exciting play throughout the tournament. Santa and his helpers will be sleighing through the neighborhoods to judge the participating decorated homes. Santa will be leading the way with candy and treats to be handed out at each location. In 1994, each neighborhood Block Club decorated a selected tree in their neighborhood. This year they will decorate a selected house on their block to be judged. The categories to be judged will include; most original, best Christmas spirit, most humorous, and greatest neighborhood involvement. The City will then honor the winners and participants at a celebration filled with certificates, caroling, and food, as well as a visit from Santa. The motorcoach will leave from the Lynwood Community /Transit Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther, Jr. Boulevard in Lynwood at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, January 29, 1996. We are scheduled for the 2:00 p.m. show. 0 We will arrive at Hollywood Center Studios, located at 1040 North Las Palmas, in Hollywood. Upon arrival at the studios you will be served light refreshments provided by the Recreation and Community Services Department while on board the bus. We will then enter the studio for a fun - filled time as participants in the audience at the "Mike and Mattie" Talk Show. After the taping of the show we will return to the Lynwood Community /Transit Center at approximately 6:00 p.m. The cost for this trip is only $3.00 (cash only).
