APRIL 12, 1994

The regular meeting of the Women's Commission of the City of Lynwood was held
April 12, 1994 in the Conference Room at City Hall (The agenda was duly
posted as prescribed by the Brown Act)
Chairperson Ethel Pacheco called the meeting to order at 3 10 p.m. Members in
attendance were Verna Culp, Mary Sue Lewis, Della Mazziotti, Dr Betty
Jackson, and Ethel Pacheco.
Councilmember present was Louis J Heine, Staff member present was
Carol De Jesus.

Minutes of March 8, 1994 was approved as presented.
A. OLD BUSINESS
1. Election of Officers
MOVED, SECONDED AND CARRIED that the following members
hold the following offices
Mary Sue Lewis - Chairperson
Betty Jackson - Vice - Chairperson
DellaMazziotii - Treasurer
Verna Culp - Secretary
2. Discussion of Women's History Month
Celebration - March 31, 1994
Commissioners were very pleased with the turn out of the Women's
History Month Celebration. The food was good and everyone had a
good time. Ms. Pacheco and Dr Jackson thanked Mr Heine for his
participation in the celebration. The commissioners also thanked staff
for their efforts in helping make the Women's History Month event a

memorable one. The Video tape produced by Ron Roberson of the
Lynwood Cable and shown at the event was an excellent piece of
entertainment. Dr Jackson suggested that the commissioners send
a nice certificate of appreciation to Ron Roberson. On behalf of the
other commissioners, Dr Jackson expressed sincere thanks to Ms. Pacheco
for the amount of time and energy she has put in to secure the donations.
Ms. Pacheco indicated that Ms. Frances Cunningham, one of the honorees,
sent a beautiful thank you card Ms. De Jesus briefly discussed the income
statement, a copy of which is attached. Ms. Lewis stated that she felt sad
that one of the honorees left before the event ended.
3. DISCUSSION OF COMMISSIONERS' RETREAT
Commissioner Mazziotti explained that due to the recent Women History
Celebration event, the commissioners would not have enough time to plan
for the retreat scheduled for April 21 She asked that the date for the
retreat be postponed. Other commissioners also indicated that as there
upcoming events like Mother's Day, Cinco De Mayo etc., it would be
difficult to set the date of retreat during the month ofMav
Thus, by general consent of the commissioners, the original plan to have the
Commissioners' retreat scheduled for April 21 has been postponed to
I hursday, June 23, 1994 at Bateman Hall, Room 2 from 8.30 a. m. - 3 00
p.m. and the next regular meeting scheduled for May 10 will serve as a
planning meeting for the retreat.
Dr Jackson mentioned that last year, she worked with 60 kids from the
Lynwood Senior High School and Lynwood Continuing School and the
School District paid for their lunches. The invited guests were all girls
and they felt greatly honored as they were treated as voung ladies.
When asked if the schools can do it again for the retreat, Ms. Gip stated

that it might be difficult as there were some financial problems involved.
In fact, Micky Cureton, the principal of the Lymvood High School, had to
personally pay for the kids and the Continuing School paid through a grant.
Newly appointed Chairperson Lewis indicated that there is no harm asking
the schools again and Ms. Mazziotti was assigned to confer with the
Superintendent ofschools. Ms. Lewis expressed that she believed in wide
publicity, invitation and participation in order to get the community to come
together
Dr Jackson also mentioned that June is when Region IX should meet to
discuss issues, explore and develop a concentrated working relationship
affecting women within the communities so women can have self - esteem. She
suggested that there should be a joint networking with Region IX for the
retreat.
B. COMMISSIONER(S) AND PUBLIC ORALS
- Ms. Lewis mentioned that she wanted to thank whoever nominated her for
QUANIAS.
- Dr Jackson suggested that a Roberts Rule oJ'Order book be secured as a
guideline to help out Ms. Lewis, the new Chairperson, in conducting the
meeting; There is a need for an updated Resource Directory for use at the
Retreat.
There being no further business, the Lynwood Women's Commission Meeting
was adjourned at 4:30 p.m.
