COMMISSIONER(S) AND PUBLIC ORALS ADJOURNMENT MOTION TO ADJOURN TO A REGULAR MEETING FOR APRIL 12, 1994 IN THE CONFERENCE ROOM, CITY HALL. �,�.. .= :II %�:rv�veyG� 0 LYNWOOD WOMEN'S COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF FEBRUARY 9, 1994 The regular meeting of the Women's Commission of the City of Lynwood was held February 9, 1994 in the Conference Room at City Hall. (The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act.) Chairperson Ethel Pacheco called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. Members in attendance were: Verna Culp, Mary Sue Lewis, Della Mazziotti, Dr. Betty Jackson, and Ethel Pacheco. Staff members present were Silvia Lara and Carol De Jesus. Minutes of January 31, 1994 was approved with the following corrections to read that: 1. Under Old Business Ms. Culp has expressed the need to invite Councilpersons to attend the Lynwood Women's Commission. 2. Under Commissioner(s) /Public Orals Ms. Mazziotti mentioned that she is a member of the Gardena Valley Democratic Club and she requested signatures from the commissioners for a petition on a "Health Care Issue ". Chairperson Pacheco mentioned that it was an honor to have Councilman Louis J. Heine present at the meeting. (Commissioners Present unanimously agreed) I. COMMISSIONERS BUSINESS A. OLD BUSINESS 1. Resource Guide Directory Ms. DeJesus mentioned that at a previous meeting, the commission decided on developing a Resource Guide Directory which will serve as a reference tool for all women to use. Dr. Jackson mentioned that a sub - committee comprised of 3 members has not had a chance to meet as of yet. She mentioned that the sub- committee can meet on March 1, 1993 at 3:00 p.m.. 2. Child Care Workshop Child Care Workshop business was tabled until further notice due to other events taking place. MOVED, SECONDED AND CARRIED to table Child Care Workshop to a later date. .r • LYNWOOD WOMEN'S COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF FEBRUARY 9, 1994 B. NEW BUSINESS 1. Discussion of Commissioners' Retreat MOVED, SECONDED AND CARRIED that the discussion of Commissioners' Retreat be brought to the table. Ms. Mazziotti asked if the Commissioners' Retreat was going to be held in the City or outside of the city. Councilman Heine mentioned that under the Brown Act, any event, such as the retreat can not be held away from the city. Commissioners decided to hold the retreat at Bateman Hall. Commissioners unanimously agreed that in order to have a great retreat it would have to be scheduled sometime in April and on a Thursday. Ms. DeJesus made room arrangements with Bateman Hall personnel for Thursday, April 21, 1994, Room 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ms. Lewis mentioned that if letters were sent soon enough to guests or presenters asking them to participate, they can give notice ahead of time to their place of work and be able to get off with pay. Dr. Jackson mentioned that during the previous meeting it was discussed that commissioners wanted Council members or a liaison to be in attendance so that they could be aware of what the commission does in relation to its goals and objectives. Furthermore, the Commission specifically wanted to get direction from Council as to what they wanted the commission to do. The Commissioners discussed the following topics for The Retreat: I. WOMEN AGAINST CRIME A. Shelter Aid To Women B. Teachers Against Crime C. Mothers Against Crime D. Young Adults /Teenagers Against Crime E. Women In The Military Against Crime F. Women In Medicine Ms. Lewis suggested to have flyers made for the audience. LYNWOOD WOMEN'S COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF FEBRUARY 9, 1994 Suggested Speakers: - Joy Turner and Lorna Hawkins from Drive By Agony - Natalie Salazar from Sheriff's Department MOVED, SECONDED AND CARRIED that topics given for for retreat be closed. 2. Women's History Month Celebration - March 31, 1994 Dr. Jackson nominated Ms. Mazziotti to be the chair for the March 31, 1994 Women's History Month in Salute to Evelyn Wells. Ms. Culp mentioned that the matter honoring Evelyn Wells on March 31, 1994 was discussed, moved and seconded at the previous meeting. Commissioners mentioned that a plaque will be given to Evelyn Wells on behalf of the commissioners. 3. Election Of Officers Election of officers was tabled to next meeting. II. COMMISSIONERS' /PUBLIC ORALS * Commissioners discussed the change of date and time of the Lynwood Women's Commission regular meeting from the Second Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. to the Second Tuesday of each month at 3:00 p.m.. MOVED, SECONDED AND CARRIED that meeting date and time be changed from the Second Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. to the Second Tuesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. * Ms. Lewis suggested that when people register at the retreat, they need to have some flyers, blank paper, and pencils available. Dr. Jackson mentioned that the Commission has had packages for participants in the past. There being no further business, the Lynwood Women's Commission Meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
