YOUTH COMMISSION MINUTES

The City Of Lynwood Youth Commission met in regular session on
November 2, 1994 at 6:00 p m at the Lynwood Community Transit
Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, Lynwood.
Chairperson Jesus Trigo presided.
ROLL CALL
Commissioners Acosta, Combs, Gutierrez, Williams, Hampton, and
Sandoval answered roll call Commissioner Hardin arrived at 6:05
p.m. and Vice - Chairperson Zavala, along with Commissioners Gonzalez
and.McZeal arrived at 6:13 p.m.
Commissioners Steven Moody and Rasheed Gregory did not answer roll
call.
CERTIFICATION OF THE POSTING OF THE AGENDA
Jim Given, Project Manager certified the`posting of the agenda
APPROVAL OF THE PAST MINUTES
It was moved by Commissioner Sandoval and seconded by Commissioner
Acosta to approve the minutes of October 5, 1994
PROGRAM REPORTS
Recreation and Community Services
Mr. Given reported on Department events that were scheduled for
late October and early November Mr Given reported on the success
of Halloween activities sponsored by the Department and how well
the SKIP Program was staged
Youth Council /Teen Center
There was no Youth Council /Teen Center representative at the
meeting.
GENERAL REPORTS
Halloween Dance
Commissioners Zavala, McZeal, Sandoval and Gonzalez outlined the
events of the Youth Commission /Youth Council Halloween Dance held
at the Teen Center on Friday, October 28, 1994 They were
congratulated by fellow Commissioners and City staff for the work
they invested in making the dance successful
Youth Commission Scholarship
A letter, addressed to the Youth Commission, from Rochelle Chapman,
a prior Youth Commission Scholarship recipient, was read aloud by
Mr Flores. The letter was asking for the possibility of another
scholarship from the Youth Commission Mr. Given explained that the
scholarship program was for first year students and also outlined
the importance of providing a scholarship fund A letter was sent
out to Ms. Chapman apologizing for the Commission not being able to
help her and sending best of luck
New Program Ideas
Commissioners discussed the options for fundraising programs Candy
Sales, television studio trips and another dance were mentioned.
Mr. Flores is to look into the details of a television studio
trip. t
A holiday toy drive was also included inInew program ideas and a
sub - committee meeting was set for November 11, 1994 at 4:30 p.m
Commissioners McZeal, Sandoval, Gutierrez, Acosta, Williams,
Hardin, Zavala, and Gonzalez said they would attend this meeting.
Public Orals
There were no public orals.
Staff Orals
Mr. Flores mentioned that five (5) tickets were donated for
Commissioners to attend the Wall Of Fame Inductee Dinner.
Commissioners Gutierrez, Sandoval, McZeal, Zavala, Acosta, and
Gonzalez said they could use the tickets
Commission Orals
Commissioner Gonzalez mentioned that she was on the Lynwood High
School yearbook staff and that they needed donations. She asked for
Commissioners to pass the word around to potential sponsors.
Commissioner williams offered to sell candy at her school, in case
the Commission agreed to sell candy for fundraising
Commissioner Hardin apologized for being late and not helping in
the organization of the Halloween Dance
Commissioner Acosta was not aware that the Commission was planning
to organize a dance
Commissioner Zavala apologized for being late.
ADJOURNMENT
It was moved by Commissioner Zavala and seconded by Commissioner
Gutierrez to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled Youth
Commission meeting on Wednesday, December 7, 1994 at 6 00 p.m. All
in agreement and adjourned at 6:58 p m
