CITY OF LYNWOOD
YOUTH COMMISSION
The City of Lynwood Youth Commission met in regular session on
October 5, 1994 at 6 11 p m at the Lynwood Community /Transit
Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, Lynwood
Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala presided.
ROLL CALL
Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala, Commissioners Ruth .Acosta,
Rasheed Gregory, Emily Gonzalez, Lizeth Gutierrez, David Hampton,
Jennifer McZeal, Luis Sandoval, and Cianni Williams answered roll
call
Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Commissioners Andre Combs, Maylene Hardin
and Steven Moody did not answer roll call
CERTIFICATION OF THE POSTING OF THE AGENDA
Mark A Flores, Minutes Clerk, certified the posting of the agenda.
APPROVAL OF THE PAST MINUTES
It was moved by Commissioner Gregory and seconded by Commissioner
McZeal to approve the minutes of August 3, 1994.
PROGRAM REPORTS
Recreation and Community Services
Mr. Flores reported on the Department events that were held based
on the September 16 Celebration events The dinner /show held at
Bateman Hall on September 16 was deemed a success as approximately
200 people had a wonderful and entertaining evening. The Pancho
Gonzales Tennis Court dedication and Tournament was also very
successful as Terry Gonzales, sister of Pancho Gonzales,
represented Mr Gonzales. This event was followed by a spectacular
concert in the park headlined by Poncho Sanchez and his band
Teen Center /Youth Council
Representatives Salazar and Vela reported on their attendance and
help at the September 14 dinner /show
They also mentioned that they have scheduled a trip to see the
Lakers vs. Knicks at the Forum and looking to attend a Los Angeles
Raiders game. These excursions are in conjunction with the Teen
Center and all are invited.
FUNDRAISING DANCE
Commissioner Zavala reported on dance sub - committee meeting a
stated that due to the unavailability of Bateman Hall, the Teen
Center could be an alternate site
SAN DIEGO ZOO TRIP
It was deemed unfeasible to attend the San Diego Zoo trip because
of scheduling problems. Youth Commissioners were invited to attend
the Knotts Scary Farm trip with the Teen Center
TALENT SHOW
A Youth Commission Talent Show was deemed unfeasible in the near
future. Commissioner Zavala moved for the item to be removed from
the agenda and seconded by Commissioner Sandoval.
NEW PROGRAM IDEAS
Commissioner McZeal mentioned that a candy drive was a good idea
for fundraising and that the Commission should investigate into
attracting sponsorship from a local radio station for a larger
fundraising event.
PUBLIC ORALS
Youth Council representative Salazar spoke of plans to host a
haunted house at a neighborhood home.
Mark Flores presented the idea of Commissioners volunteering at the
Ham Park Haunted House in return for use of the Teen Center as a
dance site
STAFF ORALS
Their were no staff orals.
COMMISSION ORALS
Commissioner Gonzalez wanted to know when will she receive her
business card stating that she is in the Youth Commission.
Commissioners McZeal, Sandoval and Gutierrez have also not received
their cards
Commissioners McZeal, Sandoval, Gregory and Acosta paid the $2.00
each Commissioner was to pay for the plaque presented to Diana
Escalante at the last Commission meeting
Commissioners Zavala, Sandoval and Gonzalez said they would attend
the October 7 ground breaking for the new high school.
ADJOURNMENT
It was moved by Commissioner Gonzalez and seconded by Commissioner
Gutierrez to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting of the
Youth Commission on Wednesday, November 2, 1994. All in agreement
and adjourned at 6 54 p m.
