General Recreation and Parks B. Teen Center /Youth Council Fundraising Dance Teen Excursion to San Diego Zoo New Program Ideas CITY OF LYNWOOD YOUTH COMMISSION OPENING CEREMONIES The City of Lynwood Youth Commission met in a regular session on July 13,1994 at 6:00 p.m. at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Lynwood. Chairperson Jesus Trigo presided. Roll Call Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala, Commissioners Lizeth Gutierrez, Emily Gonzales, David Hampton, Maylene Hardin, Jennifer McZeal, and Cianni Williams answered roll call. Commissioners Ruth Acosta, Andre Combs, Rasheed Gregory, Steven Moody, and Luis Sandoval did not answer roll call. Certification of the Posting of the A eg nda Jim Given, Project Manager certified the posting of the agenda. Commissioner Ruth Acosta arrived at 6:05 p.m. Approval of Past Minutes It was moved by Commissioner Gutierrez and seconded by Commissioner Hardin to approve the minutes of June 1, 1994. Motion carried. Minutes approved. Swearing in of New Commissioners Mr. Given announced that the new Youth Commissioners; Emily Gonzalez, Jennifer McZeal, and Cianni Williams were sworn in by the City Clerk at 5.30 p.m. this afternoon. The new Commissions have attended a training session. Chairperson Jesus Trigo welcomed the new Commissioners on behalf of the Commission. Commissioner Andre Combs arrived at 6:07 p.m. SCHEDULED MATTERS Program Reports Recreation and Community Services 2 Mr. Given reported on the following Recreation and Community Services programs: A. The Department's summer program is now in full swing. The summer day camp program will begin its second session next week. B. The Department and the Lynwood Sports Association are beginning a youth soccer program. Registration is currently being taken at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center. C. The Lynwood Teen Resource Center and the Lynwood Activities Center jointly sponsored an excursion to the Dodger game against the Montreal Expos on Wednesday, June 6, 1994. D. The next day on June 7, the City hosted a Dodger day at Mervyn Dymally Park. Three Dodgers, including Manny Mota held a clinic for approximately 300 youth at the park. Evaluation of Past Programs Ms Escalante reported that the eagerly awaited Youth Commission vs. Youth Council basketball game was held on Tuesday, June 21. All in attendance enjoyed the game and refreshment afterwards. She also thanked Steven Moody, Andre Combs, and Maylene Hardin for representing the Commission at the two graduation ceremonies and presenting plaques to the valedictorians. . Finally, she reported that the Youth Commission held a game booth at the Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 18, 1994. New Program Ideas Ms. Escalante requested any new program ideas from the Commission. Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala recommended sponsoring a teen excursion to the San Diego Zoo. ej Chairperson Jesus Trigo recommended that the Commission sponsor a dance to raise funds for the scholarship program. He volunteered to speak to the owner of Vasilios regarding the use of their facility for the dance. A sub committee was organized to plan the dance. Commissioners Combs, Gonzalez, Williams, Gutierrez, and Zavala volunteered to be on the Committee. The first sub committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 19 at 4:00 p:m. Public Orals None Staff Orals None Commission Orals Commissioner Maylene Hardin welcomed the new Youth Commissioners. Chairperson Jesus Trigo welcomed the new Youth Commissioners. Adiournment It was moved by Commissioner Hardin and seconded by Commissioner Acosta to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting of the Youth Commission on Wednesday, August 3, 1994.
