Adjournment to August 3, 1994 L 0 1 CITY OF LYNWOOD YOUTH COMMISSION MINUTES OF JUNE 1, 1994 OPENING CEREMONIES The Youth Commission met in a regular session on the above date at 6:00 p.m. at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Chairperson Jesus Trigo presided. Roll Call Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala, Commissioner Ruth Acosta, Commissioner Rasheed Gregory, Commissioner Andre Combs, Commissioner Lizeth Gutierrez, Commissioner Maylene Hardin, Commissioner Steven Moody, and Commisssioner Luis Sandoval answered roll call. Commissioner Cameron Green, Commissioner Sabrinya Green, and Commissioner David Hampton did not answer roll call. Certification of the Posting of the Agenda Recreation and Community Services Project Manager, Jim Given certified the posting of the agenda. Approval of Past Minutes It was moved by Commissioner Ruth Acosta and seconded by Maylene Hardin to approve the minutes of May 4, 1994 Motion carried. Minutes approved. Swearin2 in of New Commissioners Chairperson Jesus Trigo reported that Commissioners Steven Moody, Andre Combs, and Luis Sandoval were sworn in by the Deputy City Clerk just before the meeting. All Commissioners present introduced themselves and welcomed the new Commissioners. SCHEDULED MATTERS Program Reports General Recreation and Community Services Mr. Given announced to the Commission the following events: E 0 2 A. Over Memorial Day weekend, the Lynwood Sports Association sponsored a very successful baseball tournament. Approximately 16 teams participated. B. The City of Lynwood commemorated Cinco De Mayo with a celebration at Mervyn Dymally Park on Saturday, May 7. C. The Recreation and Community Services Department will begin its summer recreation program. A wide array of programs for youth and adults will begin on June 20, 1994. Teen Center /Youth Council Felicano Salazar, president of Youth Council presented Youth Commission Secretary Diana J. Escalante with a certificate for her assistance to the Youth Council. He also invited the Commission to following Youth Council upcoming events: A. The Teen Center and Activities Center are sponsoring an Excursion to Dodger Stadium on Wednesday, July 6. Tickets are $7.00 per person and may be purchased at the Lynwood Teen Center before June 25. B. The long waited 'basketball challenge between the Youth Council and Youth Commission will take place on Tuesday, June 21 at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m. All Commission and Council members will be asked to donate for the refreshments. C. The Youth Council will sponsor the carnival games during the Juneteenth program. The Commission inquired how they could be of further assistance to the fundraiser. A subcommittee was formed to investigate the possibility of the Commission sponsoring a booth at the Juneteenth Celebration. Commissioner Acosta, Sandoval, Combs, and Hardin volunteered to serve on the Committee Youth Service Awards Ms. Escalarite presented the Youth Commission with an evaluation of the Youth Service Awards program. Staff recommends to have the same time frame next year, if the Commission so desires. 0 • 3 Lynwood Graffiti Media Day Mr. Given informed the Commission that the City will sponsor a Lynwood Graffiti Media Day on Saturday, June 4. All Commissioners are invited to attend the event. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9:00 a.m. New Programming_ Ideas Ms. Escalante requested any new programming ideas from the Commission. Chairperson Jesus Trigo asked all Commissioners to bring back some suggestions for the next meeting. Hosler /Lynwood High School Graduation Ceremonies Ms. Escalante reminded the Commissioner that every June, the Commission presents awards to the valedictorian at the Junior and Senior High Schools. Typically, the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson has presented the awards in the past. However, this year, all members of the Commission are invited to share in the honors. Ms. Escalante will mail all the Commissioners the specific dates and times of the ceremonies. ORAL COMMUNICATION Public Orals None Staff Orals Ms. Escalante thanked the Youth Council for her certificate. Commission Orals Commissioner Maylene Hardin welcomed the new Youth Commissioners. Commissioner Rasheed Gregory welcomed the new Youth Commissioners. Commissioner Ruth Acosta welcomed the new Youth Commissioners. Commissioner Luis Sandoval spoke of the Commission coordinating fundraiser to assist with upcoming events. Commissioner Lizeth Gutierrez welcomed the new Youth Commissioners. Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala welcomed the new Youth Commissioners. 4 Chairperson Jesus Trigo welcomed the new Youth Commissioners and inquired why the Lynwood Teen Center appears to be closed in the afternoon and of the status of the Lynwood Activities Center. Project Manager Given stated that he will investigate the concern of the Teen Resource Center being closed. Also, the City is currently working on various proposals and projects that will hopefully, keep the Lynwood Activity Center open. Adjournment It was moved by Commissioner Hardin and seconded by Vice'Chairperson Michelle Zavala to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, July 6, 1994. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
