CITY OF LYNWOOD YOUTH COMMISSION OPENING CEREMONIES The City of Lynwood's Youth Commission met in a regular session on April 4, 1994 at 6:05 p.m. at the Lynwood Community/Transit Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Lynwood. Chairperson Jesus Trigo presided. Roll Call: Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala, Commissioner Rasheed Gregory, Commissioner David Hampton and Commissioner Maylene Hardin answered roll call. Commissioner Joe Araujo, Commissioner Ruth Acosta, Commissioner Cameron Green, Commissioner Sabrinya Green, and Commissioner Lizeth Gutierrez did not answer roll call. Certification of the Posting of the Agenda Recreation and Community Services Project Manager, Jim Given certified the posting of the agenda. Aooroval of Past Minutes Due to a lack of a quorum, the minutes of March 2, 1994 could not be approved. SCHEDULED MATTERS Elections Due to lack of a quorum, the Commission's re- organization could not be accomplished. The item will be placed on the agenda for the next regularly scheduled Commission meeting. Program Reoorts General Recreation Mr. Given reported on the following Recreation and Community Services Department programs. 0 E A. The City of Lynwood and the Lynwood Sports Association will odd ale the Opening Day of Baseball season on Saturday, April 23 at Mervyn Dymally Park. B. On that same Saturday, the Teen Resource Center will sponsor an excursion to Magic Mountain for all youth enrolled in the after school playground program and the Youth Council. Tickets for the trip may be purchased at the Teen Resource Center. The price of the tickets is $ 16.00 each. C. The Senior Citizen program will sponsor an excursion to the Los Angeles County and State Arboretum on Thursday, April 21, 1994. D. The City of Lynwood's annual Cinco De Mayo celebration has been scheduled for Saturday, May 7, 1994. Youth Council No Report Teens Against Graffiti Mr. Given reported to the Commission that the City and the T.A.G. program is scheduling a Paint Out Graffiti Day. The proposed date for this function is Saturday, June 4, 1994. This event will be discussed further at the next Youth Commission meeting. Youth Service Awards Diana J. Escalante, Recreation Staff advised the Commission on the status of the Youth Service Awards. As to date, she has not received any nomination forms. Furthermore, the Youth Service Awards sub - committee has yet to meet. She reminded the Commission that the event is scheduled for Bateman Hall on April 29, 1994. She requested, that the Commission make a decision regarding whether or not to sponsor the activity. A discussion ensued. The Commission decided to continue with the function. All Commissioners in attendance were asked to attend a sub committee meeting on Monday, April 11 to discuss the event. ORAL COMMUNICATION Public Orals None Staff Orals Ms. Escalante distributed to the Commissioners a copy of the report by The National League of Cities Congressional City Congresses entitled "Ten Considerations on Violence. This essay detailed the prevalence of violence in America and offered some solutions to it reduction. The Commissioners were requested to review the essay and provide feedback at the next meeting. Commission Orals Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala invited the Commissioners to attend the meeting at Bateman Hall tonight. The purpose of the meeting is to reduce the racial tensions that have arisen out of the recent incident which a grocer shot a suspected teenaged burglar. Adjournment It was moved by Commissioner Maylene Hardin and seconded by Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled Youth Commission meeting on May 4, 1994. YOUTH COMMISSION MINUTES OF MARCH 2, 1994 OPENING CEREMONIES The City of Lynwood's Youth Commission met in a regular session on the above date at 6:05 p.m. at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala presided. Roll Call The following Commissioners were present: Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala, Commissioner Ruth Acosta, Commissioner Rasheed Gregory, Commissioner Lizeth Gutierrez, Commissioner Maylene Hardin, Commissioner David Hampton. The following Commissioner were absent: Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Commissioner Joe Araujo, Commissioner Cameron Green, Commissioner Sabrinya Green, and Commissioner La Chatta Hunter. Certification of the Posting of the Agenda Jim Given, Project Manager, reported the agenda had been duly posted, in accordance with the Brown Act. Approval of Past Minutes It was moved by Lizeth Gutierrez and seconded by Vice Chairperson Zavala to approve the minutes of February 2, 1994, with the following correction. Lizeth Gutierrez made the motion to support the radio station V103.9 F. M. decision to not play songs that contain lyrics which are sexually explicit or glories drug usage. Motion carried. Minutes approved. SCHEDULED MATTERS PROGRAM REPORTS Recreation and Community Services Department Mr. Given announced the following upcoming city events. A. The Rosa Park Transit Center dedication ceremony is planned for tomorrow March 3. All Youth Commissioners are invited to attend. a 0 B. Youth baseball and softball registration has begun. The registration fee is $35.00 per child. Teen Center Felicano Salazar, Youth Council President updated the Commission on the following Teen Resource Center activities: A. A Valentine's Dance was held on Friday, February 11. A total of 76 teenagers attended the dance. B On February 22, an excursion to the Clipper game was held. Youth Service Awards Diana Escalante, staff member, elaborated on the background and the upcoming Youth Service Awards Ceremony. The ceremony will be held on Friday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m. at Bateman Hall, Room 1.
