MINUTES
December 1, 1993
OPENING CEREMONIES
The City of Lynwood's Youth Commission met in a regular session on the above date at 6:05
p.m. at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Chairperson Jesus Trigo presided.
Roll Call
Commission Present:
Chairperson Trigo, Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala, Commissioner Sabrinya Green, Maylene
Hardin, Commissioner Rasheed Gregory, and Commissioner David Hampton.
Commissioner Not Present:
Commissioner Joe Araujo, Commissioner Cameron Green, Commissioner Ruth Acosta,
Commissioner Lizeth Gutierrez, and Commissioner Jose Villareal.
Commissioner Excused:
Commissioner La Chatta Hunter
It was moved by Vice Chairperson Zavala and seconded by Commissioner Gregory to excuse
Commissioner Hunter. Motion carried.

The Agenda has been duly posted by the Deputy City Clerk in accordance with the Brown Act.
Approval of Past Minutes
It was moved by Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala and seconded by Commissioner Cameron
Green to approve the minutes of November 3, 1993.

SCHEDULED MATTERS
Program Reports
Project Manager, Jim Given updated the Commission on the following activities:
A. The City of Lynwood's Youth Commission co- sponsored their first Teams Against
Graffiti (T.A.G ) program on Saturday, November 20, 1993. There were over 600
youth in attendance. -
The youth involved first participated in a march, then went to various locations to paint
out graffiti. The youth then returned to the Community /Transit Center where they
participated in a rally and enjoyed lunch.
The Commissioners felt the rally should have been first and the number of participants
should have been limited.
B. The Recreation and Community Services Department is currently accepting registration
for youth flag football and basketball.
C. The annual Commissioners /Block Watch Christmas Dinner will be held on Thursday,
December 9, 1993. Commissioners wishing to attend must call in their reservations to
the City Manager's Office by tomorrow, December 4
D The annual Candy Cane Lane Christmas Parade is scheduled for Friday, December 10,
1993. All Commissioners are invited to the pre - parade reception at 6:00 p.m. at
Bateman Hall. The parade begins at 7:00 p.m.
Youth Council
This item will be discussed at the next meeting.
Youth Service Awards
The Youth Service Awards, originally scheduled for Friday, December 10, 1993 will be
rescheduled to the spring of 1994, due to the Christmas Parade. Staff will research the
availability of Bateman Hall and report back with possible dates to the Commission.

Staff Orals
Jim Given, Project Manager, reminded the Commission of the following:
The City is preparing a workshop on the role of the Youth Commission and staff.
The City is ordering business cards for the new commissioners. After the meeting,
please see the secretary to confirm the spelling of names.
The Recreation and Community Services Department is researching new sites for Youth
Commission meetings. This item will be discussed further at the next regularly scheduled
meeting.
Commission Orals
Commissioner Sabrinya Green announced that her Hosler Junior High School Mock Trial Class
is in the finals.
Commissioner Rasheed Gregory apologized for missing the previous meeting.
Commissioner David Hampton apologized for missing the previous meeting.
Commissioner Maylene Hardin congratulated the Commission on a well received T.A.G
program.
Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala apologized for not being present at the previous meeting.
Chairperson Jesus Trigo expressed his gratitude to all the Commissioners present at the T.A.G
program. He also wished Sabrinya Green good luck at the Mock Trial finals.
Adjournment
It was moved by Commissioner Cameron Green and seconded by Commissioner Maylene Hardin
to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, January 5, 1994. Motion
carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m.

The City of Lynwood Youth Commission met in a regular session on the above date at
6:00 p.m. at the Lynwood Community/Transit Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther
King Jr. Blvd.

Commissioner Cameron Green, Commissioner Sabrinya Green, Commissioner
Rasheed Gregory, Commissioner David Hampton, Commissioner Maylene Hardin and
Commissioner La Chatta Hunter.
Commissioners Not Present:
Commissioner Daniel Haley.
Commissioners Excused:
Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala, Commissioner Lizeth Gutierrez, Commissioner Jose
Villarreal.
Staff Present:
Ralph Davis, Director Recreation & Community Services, Perry Brenta, Facility &
,, Program Supervisor and Sivai Talolua Minutes Cleric of the Commission.
Certification of the Poatina of the Agenda
Minutes Clerk of the Commission, Sivai Talohia certified the posting of the Agenda in
accordance with the Brown Act.
With a quorum present, a motion was made by Commissioner Ioe Araujo seconded by
Cameron Omen to approve the minutes of August 4, 1993 and September 1, 1993.
Everyone in agreement. Motion carried.

Correspondence
A. Perry Brenta, Facility & Program Supervisor, reported to the Commission that
he was contacted by phone by the Watts Health Foundation about a
Workshop on Tobacco Control Program and they are looking for Teen Advocates
who are interested in participating.
B. The Workshop will be on October 16 and 23. At the end there will be a teat and
whoever passes will get paid $25.00 and they have 3 job selections available for a
possibility of employment. The workshop will be at the Watts Health Center.
SCHEDULED MATTERS
General Recreation and Community Services Department
Perry Brenta, Facility and Program Supervisor updated the Commission on the
following activities:
A. There are two (2) field trips scheduled for Knott's Scary Farm, one (1) on Friday
October 15 and the second on Thursday, October 28, 1993.
B. Lynwood Activity Center will officially open on Saturday, October 9, 1993 from
11:00 am. - 1:00 p.m.
C. The Flag Football and Soccer Programs have started taking registrations.
Teen Center/Youth Council
Perry Brenta, Facility and Program Supervisor, updated the Commission on the
following activities:
A. The Youth Council has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday, October 13, 1993 at
the Teen Center at 5:00 p.m.
B. The Teen Center hours of operation will change to 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. due to
the winter schedule.
Anti Graffiti Dav
The Commission has voted to change the Anti- Graffiti date from Saturday, October
23, 1993 to Saturday, November 20, 1993. It will now return to the Sub Committee
consisting of; Clrairperson Jesus Trigo, Commissioner Ruth Acosta, Commissioner Joe
Araujo, Commissioner Cameron Green, Commissioner David Hampton, and
Commissioner La Chatty Hunter for the planning process. They have scheduled their
next Sub Committee meeting on Wednesday, October 13, 1993 and every Wednesday
until the 17th of November. The meeting will be held at the Teen Center at 5:00 p.m

You Service Awar
Commissioners did not agree on Proposed Budget as it is too expensive,and there were
other concerns relating to the Nomination Form It was determined to be referred
back to the Sub Committee consisting of Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Vice Chairperson
Michelle Zavala, Commissioner Cameron Green, Commissioner Rasheed Gregory,
Commissioner Maylene Hardin and Commissioner La Chatta Hunter for revision. The
Sub Committee will meet again on Wednesday, October 13, 1993 at 6:00 p.m. at the
Teen Center.

Staff Orals
ORAL COMMUNICATION
Perry Brents advised the Commission that Diana Escalante is no longer with the Youth
Commission, and that Sivai Talolua is now the new Minutes Clerk. She will be
working directly with the Youth Commission and if any of the Commissioners need
information or assistance with anything to contact Sivai Talohta or the Youth
Commission Advisor Perry Brents.
Recreation Staff Member Sim Talohra thanked all the Commissioners that took
their time to come out and help on Mexican Independence Celebration Day on
September 19, 1993. It was a great day.
Commission Orals
All the Commissioners congratulated Ruth Acosta and David Hampton on their
appointment as Commissioners.
Commissioner Ruth Acosta and Commissioner David Hampton thanked the
Commissioners for accepting them into their new appointment and that they will try
their beat in fi lfiling their duties as Commissioners.
Chairperson Jesus Thgo encouraged the Commissioners to take their role seriously and
get down to business.
Commissioner Cameron Green apologized for missing the past meetings of the
Commission.

Commissioner La Chatta Hunter stressed the importance of being a Commissioner, to
be more involved, to voice their opinions instead of being a silent body. In addition she
might be leaving soon and when she does, she would like who ever will take her place
to serve the community as well as she has.

A motion was made by Commissioner Cameron Green and seconded by Commissioner
Joe Araujo to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting on November 3, 1993.
Motion carved. Meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
