IN THE CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS, 11330 BULLIS ROAD, CITY OF LYNWOOD, CALIFORNIA. 4 9 0 COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE MEETING MAY 18, 1994 I. ADMINISTRATIVE ITEMS The Community Affairs Commission met in a regular session on May 18, 1994 at the City of Lynwood City Council Chambers,located at 11330 Bullis Road. (Agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act.) Chairperson David Litsinger called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. Commissioners in attendance were Bette Espeseth, Ann A. Fields, David Litsinger, Barbara Newton and Lucille Walker. Arriving late was Commissioner Yolanda Bays. Staff Present were Recreation and Community Services Director, Ralph Davis and secretary Diana J. Escalante. It was moved by Commissioner Espeseth and seconded by Chairperson David Litsinger to approve the minutes of April 20, 1994. All in favor. Motion carried. II. INFORMATION ITEMS A. Juneteenth Program Recreation and Community Services Department staff, Diana J. Escalante invited the Commissioners to the City of Lynwood's second annual Juneteenth program on Saturday, June 18, 1994. The program will be held in the Natatorium parking lot. This celebration is held each year to commemorate the ending of slavery by President Lincoln in 1864. B. RecNet Recreation and Community Services Director Ralph Davis presented and demonstrated the long - awaited RecNet Computer information system. This computer will help the user to receive information on all the major parks and recreational attractions in Southern California. C. HCDA Funding Mr. Davis informed the Commission that the City Council approved the following community programs for HCDA funding for 1994 -95; Drive By Agony, Lynwood Natatorium, Lynwood After School Program, Lynwood Senior Citizens, Gensys, Project Impact, Community Youth Gang Services, Library Services Enhancement, St. Francis Children's program, New Testament Childcare, 1 P 0 COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE MEETING MAY 18, 1994 Truevine Homeless Mens Program and Lynwood Crossing Guards. Each program will receive between $13,000 and $26,000.00 in funding. II. SCHEDULED MATTERS A. Block Watch Mr. Davis reported that the Block Watch Captains has expanded. Three new members were at last month's meeting. B. All American City Report Mr. Davis announced to the Commission that the City of Lynwood was not a finalist in the annual All American City Awards competition. Commissioner Fields inquired if the City could inquire into and find how we could improve for next year's competition. IV. PUBLIC /ORAL COMMUNICATION Commissioner Fields announced that Compton College Alumni Association is looking for past graduates. If any alumni is interested in joining, please have them see her. Commissioner Barbara Newton commented on the problem of people dumping garbage, such as used furniture in the back of alleys. Mr. Davis responded that he will try have a representative from Code Enforcement or Sheriff Department address this issue at the next meeting. Commissioner Walker thanked the Lynwood City Council for allocating HCDA funds to keep the Library open one extra day next year. Commissioner Espeseth announced that the Ground Breaking ceremony for the new high school will be held on Saturday, June 4, 1994. She congratulated the efforts of the Recreation and Community Services Department on a successful Cinco de Mayo Celebration on May 7, 1994. 2 COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE MEETING MAY 18, 1994 Commissioner Litsinger invited the Commission to the annual Youth Merit Awards on Monday, June 6, 1994. He also invited all to the South Gate Post Office on June 6 for the inaugural World War II stamp distribution celebration. The Commission next viewed a video tape on the City's water rates. ADJOURNMENT It was moved by Commissioner Fields and seconded by Chairperson Litsinger to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, June 15, 1994. Motion carried.
