Ap t` E CITY OF LYNWOOD RECREATION & PARRS DEPARTMENT COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES JUNE 28 1994 OPENING CEREMONIES The Recreation & Parks Commission meeting of June 28, 1994 was called to order by Chairperson Bette Espeseth at 6:03 p.m. The invocation was led by Commissioner Eloise Evans, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by Commissioner Robert Markovic. Roll call of Commissioners present: Chairperson Espeseth Commissioner Martini Commissioner Markovic Commissioner Evans Commissioner Mendoza was absent Mr. Jim Given, Project Manager for the Recreation and Parks Department certified the posting of the agenda by the City Clerk. The Department of Recreation received a letter from Lorna Hawkins, President of Drive -By Agony requesting waiver of fees for a meeting to be held in Room ,#2 at Bateman Hall on September 20, 1994. The money raised from this event would be used for $500.00 scholarships to buy school supplies and clothing for low- income students. Chairperson Espeseth calls for a motion on this matter. Commissioner Evans moves that fees be waived. Motion dies for lack of a second. A second letter not on the agenda, was received from Theo Mabon, President of a Pop Warner football team. Chairperson Espeseth asks for a vote to put this item on the agenda. Commissioner Martini makes a motion to. do so. Commissioner Markovic seconds the motion and the motion is passed. Chairperson Evans then makes a motion to waive the fee for the use of the field and lights for Mr. Mabon's football practices. Commissioner Markovic seconds this motion and the motion passes. MONTHLY STAFF REPORTS A. Facility Usage Report - Attached B. News Releases - Mailed on Current Basis C. Personnel - Adel Rojas is a welcomed addition to the Recreation Department, she has been hired as a full -time, permanent employee in the position of Office Assistant II. Ms. Rojas previously worked as a part -time clerk typist at both the old Community Center and at Bateman Hall for the last eight years. r' June 28, 1994 Page 2 SCHEDULED MATTERS UNITY FESTIVAL /JULY 4TH CELEBRATION Mr. Jim Given reported that the Unity Festival and July 4th Celebration would be combined into one event this year, per approval from the Lynwood City Council. There is a variety of exciting activities planned including hay rides, pony rides, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, a variety of ethnic foods, plus a multitude of entertainment featuring singers, musicians, dancers and bands. The evening's highlight will be a spectacular fireworks display at dusk. This event is scheduled for Monday, July 4, 1994. WALL OF FAME The Wall of Fame meeting is scheduled to meet the first Wednesday of every month at 12 noon in the conference room at the Community /Transit Center. The next meeting will feature the selection of officers, honorary inductee(s), theme, date of event, etc. LYNWOOD SPORTS ASSOCIATION Mr. Given reported that the Lynwood Sports Association's Baseball Program is now coming to a close. The Association is doing some solid fund - raising this year through their candy drive. The Lynwood Sports Association will soon be opening its fireworks stand here in the City of Lynwood at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Imperial Highway. Lynwood Sports Association volunteers have turned part of a storage shed into a concession stand. The concession stand is located between Diamonds 1 and 2 in Mervyn Dymally Park. Mr. Given commends the board members on doing a great job! REPORT ON COMMISSION TERMS Mr. Ralph Davis was to report on Commission Terms, this item will have to be readdressed at a later date as Mr. Davis is on vacation. REPORT ON 94/95 CITY BUDGET The 94/95 Recreation Department Budget has not yet been approved as of this date. ,i- 0 June 28, 1994 Page 3 COMMISSION ORALS n Commissioner Markovic - Suggests that the soccer field near the Freedom Memorial be packed with granite and not sod, as this would require less maintenance. Commissioner Martini - Commissioner Evans - Chairperson Espeseth - ADJOURNMENT Gave a fairly detailed report on the expenditures incurred in Phase I of Dymally Park's Redevelopment. Commissioner Martini is very pleased, and inquires as to when Phase II will begin. He is concerned that none of the funds available go into either the General Fund or into other accounts. Mentions that she is still interested in being a Recreation and Parks Commissioner but sometimes has to leave early for other meetings. Wants to know where the Commission's picture that used to hang on the wall outside the Council Chambers is, it has been missing for quite some time. Commissioner Espeseth also inquired as to when the large mural being painted by the Natatorium Mural Contest winner will be completed. The Senior Citizens Division of the City of Lynwood's Recreation and Community Services Department has planned an exciting excursion to the annual Art -A -Fair Festival at the Laguna Beach Boardwalk for Tuesday, August 16, 1994. Along this famous boardwalk, you will find numerous fine art exhibits, workshops, demonstrations, art vendors and cafes, all for your pleasure. All participants will be able to relax and walk at their own pace. The bus will depart from the Lynwood Community /Transit Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at 9:00 a.m. and return at 3:00 p.m. Any senior citizen interested in attending the excursion must pre- register at the Community /Transit Center and pay a nominal fee of $2.00 per person.
