The City of Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department will be conducting a Basketball League in the new, air - conditioned gym located at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Rosters may be turned in beginning June 6, 1994. Registration fees may be paid beginning on June 15, 1994 from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Cost per team is $175.00, cash only. Trophies, sweatshirts, or tee - shirts will be awarded for" 1st, and 2nd place teams. There will only be (8) eight teams in each division. The Junior Division (boys and girls) will consist of players born in 1979 -80, the Senior Division (boys and girls) will be for players born in 1976- 77 -78. Registration will be taken beginning June 18, 1994 at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center Gym, located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Registration is accepted Monday through Thursday From 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. A maximum of four players and a minimum of three players will consist of a team. BOULEVARD LYNWOOD, CA 90262 CONTACT: JIM COLES AT (310) 603 -0220 EXT. 414 NATATORIUM SUMMER PROGRAM BEGINS The Lynwood Natatorium swim complex located at 3770 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., (between Bullis and Imperial) continues to operate in the spring swim schedule. Public recreation swimming is available each Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. as well as Saturday from 12:30 - 2 :30 p.m. The cost remains only 75 cents for children (17 years and younger) and $1.00 per adult (18 years and above). For the safety of all participants in the public recreation swim period we require all participants to wear proper swimming attire. In addition to encouraging family participation we allow no spectators during this period. The Summer swim program will begin June 27, 1994. The Summer swim schedule will reflect programming Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. through 9:00 p.m. Saturday will provide public recreation swimming from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. with Sunday available for pool rentals. Registration for summer swim lessons are now being received throughout the remainder of the current spring schedule of program hours. LYNWOOD'S UNITY FESTIVAL SCHEDULED JULY 4TH on Monday, July 4, the City of Lynwood through its Recreation and Community Services Department will be hosting the Annual International Unity Festival and Fireworks Display. Held at Mervyn M. Dymally Congressional Park, this year's Unity Festival will again offer an exciting array of events featuring carnival rides and games, booths offering a variety of ethnic foods, arts and crafts vendors, an old fashioned hay ride, pony rides, a large petting zoo featuring all kinds of farm animals for tots and a multitude of entertainment featuring singers, musicians, dancers and bands. The evening will then conclude with an exciting and thunderous fireworks display to serve as the finale of 'the year's event. Admission is free with minimum charges for carnival rides, games, foods, and crafts. The Unity Festival will begin at 12 noon on July 4 with booths and entertainment. The fireworks will begin promptly at dusk. This year's Unity Festival is again endeavoring to bring harmony to our community. Mayor Richards and the members of the City Council continue to strive toward the goal of togetherness for our community, and this is evident as the Unity Festival was conceived to eliminate all ethnic barriers and promote cultural exchange through awareness and understanding of the nationalities representing the City of Lynwood. Roll call of Commissioners present: Chairperson Espeseth Commissioner Mendoza Commissioner Evans Commissioner Martini Commissioner Markovic OPENING CEREMONIES Mr. Ralph Davis certified the posting of the agenda by the City Clerk. Minutes were taken, but not the fact that the Minutes minutes for the Recreation 26, 1994 were not approved. CORRESPONDENCE NONE MONTHLY STAFF REPORTS posted for the month of April due to Clerk was on vacation. Therefore, and Parks Commission meeting of April A. Facility Usage Report - Attached B. News Releases - Mailed on Current Basis C. Personnel - Mr. Davis explained reason minutes were not posted for the month of April (See above). SCHEDULED MATTERS BATEMAN HALL - PARKING & SECURITY Planning Manager Robert Diplock was in attendance in order to make a presentation on proposed parking restrictions along Ernestine Avenue. He spoke about possibly implementing the usa4e of parking permits for Lynwood residents and guest passes for their friends and relatives. This matter was approved by Council and staff was 0 April 26, 1994 Page 2 BATEMAN BALL - PARKING & SECURITY 0 Security - Mr. Davis also updated the Commission on the matter of security at Bateman Hall stating interviews were held with four security agencies and the Lynwood Sheriff's Department for possible Use at Bateman. BEAUTIFICATION TOUR AWARD PRESENTATIONS Beautification Tour - Lynwood's Annual Beautification Tour took place on Saturday, March 12 at 10:00 a.m. Three businesses and three residents were awarded plaques for receiving the top scores in their category. The residential plaque winners were: R.C. Garcia of .2670 108th Street; Carlos Salcido of 2920 Los Flores Boulevard; and Modesto Zabala of 10713 San Jose Avenue. The business winners were Royal Pet Center located at 3588 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard; Travelodge at 11401 Long Beach Boulevard; and World Savings at 3326 Imperial Highway. Seven other residential winners were awarded certificates for their efforts towards beautification. Most of the winners were present plaques and had the opportunity the Lynwood Recreation and Parks to accept their certificates and to have their picture taken with Commissioners. REC NET PROGRAM PRESENTATION Mr. Davis took pleasure in speaking about and demonstrating a new state -of- the -art, user friendly computer system. Rec Net is designed to provide the public with current information on the transportation and recreational entertainment options available throughout southern California. This computer will be housed in the lobby of the Community Center's Recreation Department. CINCO DE MAYO FESTIVITIES On Saturday, May 7, the City of Lynwood Recreation Department will host their annual Cinco de Mayo celebration from 12:00 noon until 7:00 p.m. In addition to the usual array of traditional Mexican foods, games, rides and music, there will be a street dedication in honor of Cesar E. Chavez, a recognized leader with the United Farm Workers of America. A certified farmer's market will also be featured at this Cinco de Mayo celebration. REPORT ON RECREATION & PARKS GRANTS Mr. Davis gave a status report on three grants under consideration for approval to the Recreation and Community Services Department. These are: Teams Against Graffiti (T.A.G), Urban Park and Recreation Recovery Program, and the L.A. County Regional Open Space District Grant. These three grants would provid the funding necessary to allow the Department to continue with and upgrade current programs. This additional funding would also provide the opportunity to develop new programs and new sites from which to April 26, 1994 Page 3 COMMISSION ORALS Commissioner Markovic commented on the status of the soccer fields in Dymally Park and indicated that glass was reported in the play areas. He also stated that he would like to see concerts in the park programming from the Freedom Memorial site. Commissioner Martini commended on the picnic shelters constructed in Phase 1 of the Los Angeles County Grant Project. Stated "look nice but would have preferred not using wooden stands for the shelters., Chairperson Espeseth commented on the boy's baseball opening ceremony and the upcoming Farmer's Market activity. She also questioned the status of the art work on the mural contest offered by the Natatorium.
