Discussion - City's 75th Anniversary PUBLIC ORAL COMMUNICATIONS ORAL COMMUNICATIONS ADJOURNMENT Motion to adjourn to the regularly scheduled meeting on December 20, 1995 at 5:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 11330 Bullis Road, City of Lynwood, CA 90262. cones \sfl 1294.s 0 0 CITY OF LYNWOOD COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 18, 1995 MEETING The Community Affairs Commission meeting of October 18, 1995 was called to order by Chairperson David Litsinger at 5:00 p.m. The pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Bette Espeseth. Roll Call of Commissioners present: Chairperson Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner )avid Litsinger Bette Espeseth Yolanda Bays Ann Fields Lucille Walker Barbara Newton Lorna Hawkins Staff present: Mr. Ralph Davis Mr. Davis certified the posting of the agenda. Commissioner Walker motioned to approve the minutes of the October 18, 1995 meeting. Commissioner Espeseth seconded the motion. The Commission agrees and the minutes were so ordered. INFORMATION ITEMS Mr. Ralph Davis gave a report on all the upcoming events that the Recreation and Community Services Department will be having. OCTOBER 21 - Street Scene /Anti Graffiti Day This program is the end to Character Counts week. There will be a variety of events and the Anti Graffiti Day clean up will also take place. 28 - SKIP Program The program will be held at 12:00 noon. There will also be a costume parade. 28 - Gospel Fest The Gospel Fest will be held at the Lynwood High School Auditorium beginning at 6:30 p.m. 28 - Magic Mountain Trip 28 - Opening Ceremonies for the Soccer Program beginning at 10:00 a.m. ! • COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 13, 1995 MEETING PAGE 2 Mr. Davis also reported that the Drill Team program is underway and is currently preparing for the Annual Lynwood Christmas Parade which will be held on Friday, December 8, 1995. The Block Watch Captains attended a Community Policing Forum at the Century Sheriff's Station. Supervisor Burke and Sherman Block were present at this event. The purpose of this event is to inform the community as to how they can take back their streets. The City Council is currently studying various issues to prevent the water rate increases. Council is also reviewing the Prop 62 utility tax problem facing the City. SCHEDULED MATTERS Mr. Errick Lee, Executive Director of the Lynwood Chamber of Commerce was present to discuss new programs that the Chamber of Commerce is currently working on. The Chamber of Commerce has an improved newsletter. The newsletter is distributed on the first day of every month. The print is all computerized therefore making it easier for people to read. The Chamber of Commerce held a successful Job Fair. There were twenty -three (23) employers present and approximately one - thousand two - hundred individuals who attended the this event. Mr. Lee stated that the Chamber of Commerce has become more involved with the School District. They are trying to start an Internship Program in which high school students would work for two (2) weeks with no pay to learn more about the field they are planning to study. The Shop Lynwood Program is set to begin in April. The program consists of residents receiving coupons for stores in the City of Lynwood. Residents would keep their money in the City of Lynwood by shopping in their local stores. Mr. Lee reported that the Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary in April of 1996. The Chamber of Commerce would like to plan on having a big celebration along with the City of Lynwood who will be celebrating a 75th Anniversary next year. Savon is interested in the old Clark's location on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The Chamber of Commerce is trying to have them relocate to the old Alpha Beta building. 0 0 COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 18, 1995 MEETING Community Services Day is scheduled to be held on Saturday, December 16, 1995. The Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department is drafting a letter to mail to various companies asking for donations such as food, toys or christmas trees. The application is also being changed to be more specific as to what is needed in order to process the application. The Character Counts Week was well received by everyone in the community. There were various organizations involved with this program which ran from October 15, 1995 to October 21, 1995. The purpose of this program was to teach children ethics and good character. PUBLIC ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None COMMISSION ORALS Commissioner Fields stated that the Child Development Center at Compton College was named after Dr. Abel Sykes, former President of Compton College Commissioner Walker reported that the library is now open six (6) days a week and they now have Internet on the computers. Commissioner Bay wanted to know if crime has gone up in the City of Lynwood. She asked if a representative from the Sheriff's Department could come and give a report on the crime in our city. .Commissioner Hawkins reported on the Peace March and Run set for April of 1996. Commissioner Espeseth stated that she has heard that the city is going to have a card club. She also stated that there are still many people having illegal yard sales and would like to know how many code enforcement officers are out on the weekends. Chairperson Litsinger reported that on November 7, 1995 the elections for Coordinating Council will be held. The meeting was adjourned at 6:20 p.m. until the next regularly scheduled meeting on November 15, 1995.
