COMMISSION ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Y relfl Iam-"1 11 Motion to adjourn to the regularly scheduled meeting on November 15, 1995 at 5:00 p m in the City Hall Council Chambers, 11330 Bullis Road, City of Lynwood, CA 90262 C.T16 \8f11294 a 0 L CITY OF LYNWOOD COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 13, 1995 MEETING The Community Affairs Commission meeting of September 13,1995 was called to order by Chairperson David Litsinger at 5:00 p m The pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Bette Espeseth. Roll Call of Commissioners present Chairperson Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner Commissioner David Litsinger Bette Espeseth Yolanda Bays Ann Fields Lucille Walker Barbara Newton Commissioner Lorna Hawkins was not in attendance Mr. Ralph Davis stated that Commissioner Hawkins was in Sacramento receiving an award Staff present Mr Ralph Davis Mr Davis certified the posting of the agenda Commissioner Espeseth motioned to approve the minutes of the July 19, 1995 meeting Commissioner Newton seconded the motion The Commission agrees and the minutes were so ordered. INFORMATION ITEMS At the last City Council meeting, Council had a discussion about a feeding program that was scheduled to be distributed at Mervyn M. Dymally Park Council is concerned that this program would bring in people who will abuse the program. They would like for the program to be monitored properly At the moment this feeding program is being held at the National Guard Armory The City Council also requested that two (2) new Commissions be formed. The first Commission being the Library Commission which would help determine what the needs of the library are. The second Commission would be the Arts Commission which would be responsible for the expansion of arts in the community There will be a trip to the Pomona County Fair on September 20, 1995 sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce Tickets are $8 00 per person There will be an informative workshop held by the Sheriff's Department on Community Policing. It is geared to help residents identify gangs and know what procedures to follow in case of an emergency The program will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Century Sheriff's Station. COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 13, 1995 MEETING PAGE 2 '% SCHEDULED MATTERS An update of the Fall Programs was given by Mr. Ralph Davis. newsrelease handouts were given to all Commissioners Mr. Ralph Davis spoke on the Lynwood Community Youth Gang Task Force Many organizations are involved with this program. This program is geared to making our communities safer places for our youth The Teen Help,Line is another program underway Parents will be provided with a list of various organizations which they can call to help their teenage children. The lists will be available at local churches and schools. Character Counts Week will be held from October 15 through October 21, 1995. This is a nation wide program geared to teach children the value of good character A numerous amount of agencies such as; St. Francis Medical Center, the Lynwood Unified School District, Drive -By Agony, and the Community Violence Task Force as well as the City of Lynwood are hosting this event. Mr Ralph Davis asked that the presentation Mr Errick Lee, Executive Director of the Lynwood Chamber of Commerce, be held over to the next regularly scheduled meeting. The Community Services Day is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 16, 1995 This event is held to help those families in need. Food, toys (for children 12 years old and under) and Christmas trees will be distributed on this day Letters will be mailed to three (3) companies asking them to donate Christmas trees for this day. There will be information booths at this event along with local entertainment to make it a festive day Santa Claus will also be present Various Commissioners requested that boxes for canned foods and toys be placed in various locations in order for people to donate food and toys to be used for the Community Services Day The September 16th Street Fair three (3) days Martin Luther between Norton and Abbott Road will be an event that will last King Jr. Boulevard will be closed ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None .- 0 0 COMMUNITY AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 13, 1995 MEETING PAGE 3 COMMISSION ORALS Commissioner Fields stated that at the Old Americans Day there was no one representing the City of Lynwood She also attended the 80th Anniversary Celebration of the United Methodist Church and stated that she enjoyed it very much Commissioner Walker reported that the City Council is going to help out the Lynwood Library She also reported on the 80th Anniversary Celebration of the United Methodist Church She also enjoyed the program very much and said that many people were in attendance Commissioner Bays reported that the man that who was caught peeping was finally arrested. He was caught because on a parent was able to take down the license plate number of his vehicle Commissioner Espeseth reported that the Alpha Beta in Lynwood will not be ,turned into a Ralph's because Ralph's stated that this particular store did not make enough money. Chairperson Litsinger pointed out that the Community Affairs Commission picture is missing He stated that he was in favor of all the ideas presented for the Community Service Day Program. The meeting was adjourned at 6 02 p.m until the next regularly scheduled meeting on November 15, 1995
