COMMUNITY CABLE ACCESS ADVISORY COMMISSION
MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 9, 1995 MEETING
The regular meeting of the Community Cable Access Advisory Commission of the City of
Lynwood was held October 9, 1995, at the Lynwood Cable Studio. (The Agenda was duly
posted as prescribed by the Brown Act.)
Chairperson Bill Lewis Jr called the meeting to order at 5.30 P.M. Commissioners in
attendance were Bill Cunningham, A. Ann Fields, Ethel Pacheco, and Ada McZeal.
Staff present were Johonna Jacobs - Howard, Ron Roberson and Serena Coulson.
Commissioner Fields motioned to approve the minutes of the September 11, and October
9, 1995 meeting with corrections. Commissioner Cunningham seconded the motion.
I. SCHEDULED MATTERS
A. Third Annual Cable Awards Program
Commissioner Lewis stated that it was discussed by the Commissioners
and Staff in the August meeting that Staff person Howard prepare a report
regarding funds for interns and field reporters and present it to the
Lynwood City Council for approval. He also stated that we can follow up
on this matter after the planning of the Cable Awards Program. Staff
person Howard stated that she will present this matter to the
Commissioners in memorandum form in the December meeting.
Commissioner Lewis stated to the Commissioners that Staff is requesting
their suggestions and ideas on the Cable Awards Program. Commissioner
Fields asked Staff person Howard to present her list for the Cable Awards
Program.
Staff person Howard presented her list to the Commissioners and stated
that what she has done is clearly identified the awards that have been given
in the past and made suggestion for new awards. She also stated that she
has defined the kind of awards and what each award means. Staff person
Howard recommended that the PB Award be presented to Lorna Hawkins.
All the Commissioners agreed that Lorna Hawkins should be the recipient
of the PB Award. Staff person Howard stated that the Morris Award is a
new award added to the list of awards this year She also explained the
meaning of the Morris Award to the Commissioners.
Commissioner Fields asked Staff person Howard if the Morris Award
would be an annual award. Staff person Howard answered yes.

Commissioner Fields asked Staff person Roberson for the names of the
recipients that will receive the Moms Award. Staff person Roberson stated
that staff will not know the names of the recipients until after the
completion of the class. Staff person Howard continued to explain the
awards to the Commissioners. She stated that the CCAAC Special
Recognition Award was awarded to Attorney Mary Wright last year She
also stated that this year it has been recommended by Commissioner Ada
McZeal that the CCAAC Special Recognition Award be awarded to
Benjamin Miranda, Executive Director of the Concerned Citizens of
Lynwood. All the Commissioners agreed that Benjamin Miranda should be
the recipient of the CCAAC Special Recognition Award.
Staff person Howard stated that in the September 11, meeting it was
suggested that students from the Adult Cable Production Workshop
participate in the awards program this year She stated that it has been
suggested that Richard Kuan act as Master of Ceremonies and Margie
Harper act as Mistress of Ceremonies. She also stated that Dr Sergio
Jaquez and Bernard Pendergrass be our speakers from the Adult Cable
Production Workshop. Commissioner Lewis stated that he spoke with
Fumell Chatman who is a field reporter for NBC News Channel 4, in
regard to being the keynote speaker for the Cable Awards Program. He
stated that he is waiting for Mr Chatman to get back with him to let him
know if he will be available. He also stated that in the event that Furnell
Chatman is available, would he be someone that the Commissioners would
be interested in having as the keynote speaker All the Commissioners
agreed to have Furnell Chatman as the keynote speaker at the Cable
Awards Program, if he is available. Staff person Howard stated that having
Furnell Chatman as the keynote speaker is a good idea. Commissioner
Lewis further stated that he also spoke with Christopher Nance in regard to
being the master of ceremonies for the Cable Awards Program and he also
expects a response from Mr Nance.
Commissioner McZeal stated that Staff has already contacted the students
in regard to being the Master and Mistress of Ceremonies. She also stated
that this area has been taken care of Commissioner Lewis stated that in the
September 11, meeting we discussed having students as co- hosts. He also
stated, with that in mind he placed phone calls to Furnell Chatman and
Christopher Nance. However, he stated that whatever the Commissioners
agree on he is also in agreement. Commissioner Fields stated that if we get
Furnell Chatman or Christopher Nance, it would be nice to have someone
from a large studio like NBC to speak or host the Cable Awards Program.
All the Commissioners agreed.

Commissioner McZeal stated that it would be nice if the guest speaker
would let the students know the kind of opportunities that are available in
this field.
Commissioner Lewis stated that he called and spoke with the young
woman that sang the National Anthem at the council meeting. He stated
that he spoke to her about singing the National Anthem for the Cable
Awards Program. He also stated that the only drawback is that her fee
would be $50 00 for singing the National Anthem. Staff person Howard
stated that she has already contacted a young man by the name of Vincent
Coulson about singing the National Anthem.

All the Commissioners stated that they enjoyed the Lynwood Showcase.
Commissioner Pacheco stated the she really liked the segment of A
Moment in Lynwood History, featuring Bill Cunningham.
