Roll Call of Commissioners: Chairperson Mendoza - Present Commissioner Martini - Present Commissioner Lopez - Present Commissioner Lara - Present Commissioner Espeseth - Present Mr. Ralph W. Davis III, Director for the Recreation and Community Services Department certified the posting of the agenda by the City Clerk. Chairperson Mendoza opened to approve the minutes of the May 23, 1995 Recreation and Parks Commission meeting. Commissioner Lopez motioned to approve the minutes, Commissioner Espeseth seconded the motion, all were in agreement and the motion was so ordered. Personnel Report - None CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT The patio at Bateman Hall is currently undergoing major renovations to its walkways and landscaping components Patrons are understandably irritated at being inconvenienced during their times of celebration at wedding receptions and graduations. The Natatorium continues to have serious scheduling challenges due to the pools impeller not being properly balanced. Currently the pool has been closed for two (2) weeks. The reopening is scheduled for Monday, July 3 The question of whether to rehabilitate or rebuild the Natatorium is still being evaluated by an architectural firm. • June 27, 1995 Page 2 Our annual Summer Day Camp Program started on June 19 at Ham Park. The program offers three-(3) sessions (4 weeks each session) of supervised, fun - filled activities, including breakfast and lunch. The camp operates Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m, to 6:00 p.m. at a cost of $85.00 per child. Children four (4) through thirteen (13) years of age may attend. The City of Lynwood was host to nineteen (19) teams in it's 2nd Annual Memorial Day Invitational Baseball Tournament The Tournament was held over a four -day period in May. Our annual Juneteenth Festival was held on Saturday, June 24, 1995. "The Spirit of Freedom" was the festival's theme T C. Carson, co- star of the popular television sitcom "Living Single" performed. Circus Vargas was again held in Mervyn Dymally Park from June 22 through June 25. Registration is being accepted at the Community Transit Center for. ongoing dance, 'karate, and boxing programs held at both the Community Center and the Lynwood Activity Center SCHEDULED MATTERS REVIEW OF 11995/96 FISCAL YEAR BUDGET PROPOSAL There will be a special Budget Meeting at 6:00 p.m on Thursday, June 29 at City Hall City revenue has increased due to the water rate hike and new businesses in the Lynwood area. At the last budget session Councilman Heine expressed his desire to see a Bike Patrol in force at Mervyn M. Dymally Park. Councilman Richards would like to see a youth employment fund developed as well as a first class brochure listing recreation activities. UPDATE ON CURRENT TEEN CENTER GRANT FUNDED PROJECT Mr. Davis reviewed the current status of the Teen Center Grant Project. Three out of the seven (7) architectural firms bidding on the project were recommended for the job. The City Council chose the lowest bidder but did not approve of their proposal. Council will decide on another bid. $640,000.00 have been allocated for the Teen Center project. E June 27, 1995 Page 3 REPORT ON UPCOMING EVENTS 0 The Unity Festival and July 4th celebrations will again be combined into one event. There is a full line -up of entertainment and festivities planned' for Tuesday, July 4th including multi - cultural entertainment by Poncho Sanchez, Lebol M, a composer on "The Lion King" movie and various other talented performers A carnival, arts and crafts vendors, ethnic food booths, and a fireworks display at dusk round out the evenings exciting entertainment. BEAUTIFICATION TOUR AWARDS A special meeting will be called to order on Tuesday, July 11 to honor the winners of the recent Spring /Summer Beautification Tour Notification will be sent to the winners by mail.
