LYNWOOD BASEBALL
2ND ANNUAL MEMORIAL DAY
BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
The Lynwood Sports Association and The City of Lynwood Recreation
and Community Services Department played host to nineteen (19)
teams in it's 2nd Annual Memorial Day Invitational Baseball
Tournament held on May 26, 27, 28, 29 at Mervyn M. Dymally
Congressional Park in Lynwood.
The double - elimination tournament featured Pony Baseball power-
house teams such as; Rivera Baseball Association, Redondo Sunset,
Mira Costa, Wilmington Gibson Park, Montebello, Monrovia and
Lynwood Youth Baseball. The four (4) day tournament came down to
the championship games which in the 9 and 10 year old division saw
Rivera Baseball defeat Monrovia 12 - 7. In the 11 and 12 year old
division, Montebello in the loser bracket had to face a very
impressive Wilmington team. The Montebello team came to play, in
the first game they pulled out all stops for a 14 - 7 victory to
force a second game. With the tournament championship game "on the
line ", Division Director Gil Martin thought Montebello may not have
had anything left after the hard fought first game, but to
everyone's surprise Montebello exploded with a barrage of hits to
complete the two (2) game sweep with a 12 - 2 victory, and the
championship. In the 13 and 14 year old division the Lynwood Pony
team coached by Mark Flores was very impressive.in defeating
Page 2
Montebello and Redondo Sunset sending them both to the losers
bracket. With Flores' team in the lead 3 - 2 against Wilmington
and only needing one (1) out to win, the Lynwood pitcher walked a
Wilmington batter, hit a batter, and then allowed an infield single
to load the bases. The number four (4) batter for Wilmington hit
what was a routine fly ball to center field, but the ball was
misplayed and two (2) runs scored on the error to force a second
game against Wilmington. In the second and final game Coach Flores
and his team just could not overcome the shock of losing the first
game and Wilmington won 8 - 4 to win the Pony Division
Championship.
Lynwood Youth Baseball hopes everyone enjoyed the tournament which
had an average attendance of three hundred (300) people at each
game. Plans are already under way for next year's tournament at
our new baseball diamonds and field house.
If you would like to participate in future tournaments please
contact Leo Rodriguez at (310) 886 -0426.
