NOVEMBER 22, 1994
OPENING CEREMONIES
The Recreation & Parks Commission meeting of November 22, 1994 was
called to order by Chairperson Bette Espeseth at 6:00 p.m. The
invocation was led by Commissioner Markovic, and the Pledge of
Allegiance was recited by Commissioner Mendoza.

Mr. Ralph Davis, Director of the Recreation and Community Services
Department certified the posting of the agenda by the City Clerk.
Commissioner Markovic motions to approve the minutes of the
November 22, 1994 meeting, Commissioner Martini seconds the motion.
The Commission agrees and the minutes were approved.
REORGANIZATION OF COMMISSION
Before any new business can take place the Commission must
reorganize for the new year. Chairperson Bette Espeseth nominates
Julio Mendoza as the new Chairperson. Commissioner Markovic
motions to close the voting. Commissioner Lopez seconds the
motion. All are in agreement and the motion is passed.
Commissioner Lopez nominates Commissioner Martini as Vice Chairman.
Commissioner Mendoza motions for a vote to elect Commissioner
Martini as the new Vice Chairperson The vote is unanimous and the
motion is passed.
,Julio Mendoza is the new Chairperson and Commissioner Martini is
the new Vice Chairperson for the Recreation and Parks Commission.

DYMALLY PARK BOND PROJECT
There was to have been a presentation of the Dymally Park Bond
Project Exhibits A, B, and C but they were unavailable at the time
of this meeting.
VERNON PROP A FUNDS
The City of Vernon Community Services and Water Department will
transfer $4,000 in surplus Prop A funds to the City of Lynwood
Recreation and Community Services Department. A resolution will be
required to handle the transfer of these funds.
CHRISTMAS PARADE
Letters of invitation to the annual Candy Cane Lane Christmas
Parade will be sent out soon. Chairperson Mendoza will ride in the
parade, all the other Commissioners are invited to view the parade
from the judge's platform.
ART SUB - COMMITTEE DISCUSSION
Mr. Davis reported that Commissioner Lopez was approached by a
performing arts group about the possibility of performing in
Lynwood. Chairperson Mendoza asks for volunteers. Commissioner
Markovic and Commissioner Lopez will meet to make plans on how this
committee should proceed.
COMMUNITY SERVICES DAY PROPOSAL
Because of various concerns from the general public as to what
types of community services are available to them, the Recreation
Department has planned a "Community Services Day" program. This
event will take place on Monday, December 19, 1994 starting at
12:00 noon at the Bateman Hall parking lot. Food and toys will be
distributed to needy families, and information booths will be
available to introduce community services to participants.
"OH CHRISTMAS TREE" PROGRAM
The Block Watch Captains have implemented a new holiday program
this year called "Oh! Christmas Tree ". Participants will decorate
trees in their neighborhoods, then Santa and his helpers (the
Community Affairs Commission) will go by to judge the trees in
several different categories, including most humorous and best
Christmas theme etc. There will be a small reception at the
Community /Transit Center to present the awards. This event will
also take place on December 19.

BEAUTIFICATION PROGRAM.TOURS
Mr. Davis stated that Beautification Tours
neighborhoods have previously been conducted four
(1) year. After discussion by the Commission it
the tours should take place twice in one year, i

his opinion the Teen Center should retain
its present location. The architect

children dressing in uniforms vs street
clothes.
Commissioner Lopez - Commented that he witnessed an incident at
Bateman Hall between an inebriated patron
and Eveready security personnel.
Commissioner Lopez said the guards quickly
had the situation well in hand and all
went well.
ADJOURNMENT
The Recreation and Parks Commission meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. on
Tuesday, January 24, 1995 in the City Hall Council Chambers located
at 11330 Bullis Road, Lynwood, California.

As you might remember, our anniversary is coming up and we
have allready confirmed the use of Baitman Hall for that date,
February 19, 1995.
As we mentioned before, we want the surounding communities
to know what A -A is all about, and to tell the people where
to get help when they need it.
Last year we had a very good turntout, and we hope to have
a better turn -out this year. '
There will be no cover charge, food and refreshments will

COMMUNITY SERVICES DAY
The City of Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department is
proud to announce that it will be hosting its Community Services
Day. Community services and groups have been invited out on this
holiday oriented day to promote, offer and expose their particular
community services to the residents of Lynwood.
Scheduled for the event is holiday entertainment by local singing
and dancing groups. The event will also feature the City of
Lynwood Christmas Food and Gift Relief Program benefiting needy
families of Lynwood. This program helps needy families during the
holiday season in the form of a Christmas tree, toys and food
donations. Depending upon the number of eligible applications
received, commodities will be provided on first come, first serve
basis. If donations exceed eligible applications, commodities will
then be distributed to families attending the Community Service Day
who successfully complete an application, on a first come, first
serve basis. An application for this program can be picked up at
the Lynwood Community /Transit Center, 3798 Martin Luther King, Jr.
Blvd., as well as all other recreation facilities.
All Lynwood residents and local service groups are invited to
attend and participate in the Community Services Day to be held on

Monday, December 19, 1994 from 12 noon until 3:00 p.m. in the
Bateman Hall parking lot located at 11331 Ernestine Avenue (behind
Lynwood City Hall.)
The Recreation and Community Services Department is also seeking
donations of Christmas trees, toys, and non - perishable food for its
Christmas Food and Gift Relief Program to be given away during the
December 19 event. If your group would like to volunteer or have
an information booth at the event or if you would like to apply for
the Gift and Food Relief Program, please contact the Recreation and

LAWRENCE WELK DINNER THEATER

a fantastic show and dinner at the Lawrence Welk Resort Theater on

On November 11, 1994, the Lynwood Recreation and Community services
Department along with the Lynwood Sports Association will pay tribute to the
past years community volunteers and coaches at the First Awards Banquet.
As leaders and role models for the youth of our community, they are unsung
heroes. Mr.-Earl Tucker, former Lynwood high football player and
professional football player is the guest speaker. The event will be held
at Bateman Hall, located at 11331 Ernestine Avenue, Lynwood, California.
There will be a no host bar at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m. with
music and dance afterwards.
The cost for a single ticket is $10.00 and $15.00 per couple. Tickets may be
purchased at the Recreation & Community Services Office located in the
Community/ Transit Center, 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Monday through
Thursday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Please support

SHOREI -RYU KARATE - Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30

open for ages 8 years and older, both male and female. Cost

TO HOST HOLIDAY BASKETBALL CLINIC
The City of Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department
and the Lynwood High School Boy's Varsity Basketball Team are
hosting a Holiday Basketball Clinic to expose youngsters to the
fundamentals of Basketball and the importance of sportsmanship and
academics while involved in the sport.
This multi -day clinic is outlined to progress and develop skills
throughout the five stages of the clinic. Stage One of the clinic
is scheduled for Saturday, December 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon
and will introduce clinic participants to the game of basketball
and its fundamentals.
Stage Two of the clinic will be held Saturday, December 10, 1994
from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon and will focus on offensive and
defensive skills and strategies. Stage Three will teach advanced
skills and the importance of sportsmanship and academics while
involved in organized basketball. Stage Three will also feature
clinic participants watching the Lynwood High School Boy's Varsity
Basketball Team, putting to use the skills taught through the
clinic, in an intra -squad scrimmage game.
Stage Four, scheduled for December 20 -22, has clinic participants
competing in the "Pepsi Hot -Shot" City Finals. Finally, Stage Five
of the clinic will have clinic participants attend a Lynwood High
School Boy's Varsity Basketball home game (date to be announced).
During half -time of the game, those youths that successfully
completed the clinic will be recognized and will receive a special
certificate of participation.
All clinic Stages (except for Stage Five) will be held at the
Lynwood Community Center Gym located at 3798 Martin Luther King,
Jr. Boulevard. Best of all, this clinic is absolutely FREE, FREE,
FREE to all boys and girls ages 5 -16 years of age!!!

Community Services Senior Citizens Division invites you to join Phyllis
Cooper for a day of fun and excitement at the IMAX Theater in Los Angeles.
Our bus leaves the Community /Transit Center located at 3798 Martin Luther
King Jr., Boulevard on Thursday, December 8, at 9:30 a.m. The bus will
return to Lynwood at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Come peer into the future of space travel through IMAX's newest space film,
"Destiny in Space ". Highlights include unique exterior views of the Space
Shuttle in orbit, the repair of the Hubble Space Telescope and thrilling
computer generated flyovers of Mars and Venus. After leaving the theater we
will have the opportunity to visit the Museum of Science and Industry and the
gardens at Exposition Park, all of which are located on the same grounds.
Lunch will be at your own expense at a nearby Sizzler Restaurant.

Division invites you to become a member of our choral group. We
