Roll Call of Commissioners Chairperson Mendoza - Present Commissioner Martini - Present Commissioner Lopez, - Present Commissioner Lara - Present Commissioner Espeseth - Present Mr. Ralph W Davis III, Director of the Recreation and Community Services Department certified the posting of the agenda by the City Clerk. Chairperson Mendoza called for a vote on the minutes for the Recreation and Parks Commission meeting held on August 22, 1995. Commissioner Martini motioned to approve the minutes, Commissioner Espeseth seconded the motion, all were in agreement and the motion was passed. CORRESPONDENCE Commissioner Espeseth motions and Commissioner Martini seconds the request to allow the Sheriff's Station Athletic League to occupy Bateman Hall free of charge on Sunday, January 7, 1996 The Commission unanimously agrees and the motion is passed The Sheriff's League will hold its Annual Football Awards Banquet from 8:00 a m to 4:30 p.m on this date. The Commission also agreed to waive the fees for the use of Bateman Hall by the Registrar- Recorder /County Clerk Precinct Officer Training will be conducted in Room #2 on Thursday, October 26, 1995 from 9 :00 a m to 7 00 p.m. Mr Davis requests permission to add an item of correspondence not posted on the agenda Commissioner Espeseth moves that the item be added Commissioner Lara seconds the motion, and a letter concerning Community Services Day is read before the Commission. Community Affairs Commissioner David Litsinger is inviting the Recreation and Parks Commission to be a part of this year's Community Services Day. Commissioner Litsinger would like the Commission to decorate a.Christmas tree that will be raffled off to a needy family September 26, 1995 Page 2 Continued Chairperson Mendoza calls for a vote on getting involved with Community Services Day Commissioner Espeseth motions for approval, Commissioner Martini seconds the motion All are in favor and the motion is so ordered MONTHLY STAFF REPORTS A. Personnel Report - None CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT Mr Davis announces that he has received several letters from senior citizens expressing how pleased they are with the senior trips and excursions Registration is now being accepted for youth football, volleyball and soccer, as well as adult basketball The proposal on the Afterschool Playground program will be heard before the Lynwood School District Board of Trustees at their next meeting. The Performing Arts group is busily preparing for a Christmas program. Staff is seeking a grant that will allow this program to expand further At the City Council's request, the Recreation Department is presently conducting research on the formation of an Art Committee. A survey will be presented to the Recreation and Parks Commission before an item is prepared for Council. The Department is also investigating the possibility of forming a Junior All -City Orchestra and Band The Recreation and Community Services Department is on target in its 5 -year plan to provide expanded services throughout the community Plans are to provide entertainment and host private parties for birthdays, etc School Teachers that are off -track may be utilized in activities for extended education. • September 26, 1995 - Page 3 SCHEDULED MATTERS WALL OF FAME The tentative date for the Wall of Fame Program is Wednesday, December 6, 1995 The nominee for induction.is Mr. Pete Rozzellel, Former President of the National Football League Commissioner Espeseth moves for a vote on this recommendation, Commissioner Martini seconds the motion, all are in favor. This program will go before the Wall of Fame Board for implementation CHARACTER COUNTS WEEK Character Counts week is set to begin on Sunday, October 15, 1995 and will be celebrated here in the City of Lynwood until Saturday, October 21. Some of the activities planned are a tree planting ceremony, teachers appreciation luncheon, Drive -by Agony Street Scene, basketball game, art /essay contest, anti - graffiti clean -up day, and fashion show and dance. The Commission is encouraged to participate in any and all of these activities HALLOWEEN PROGRAM The Recreation Department is hosting its annual S.K I P. /Costume Parade on Saturday, October 28 beginning at 11:00 a m A Halloween. carnival will be held on Tuesday, October 31 at the Lynwood Community Transit Center from 5:30 p m to 8:30 p m. Game booths, candy, prizes, face painting, and other special attractions will be available Snacks and beverages may be purchased at a reasonable price. FIESTAS PATRIAS REPORT The Fiesta Patrias program went well overall, with approximately 30,000 people in attendance. The City has signed a two -year contract with Pageantry Productions, who will bring this special event to the City of Lynwood again next year LYNWOOD SPORTS ASSOCIATION VOLUNTEER AWARDS PROGRAM The Lynwood Sports Association (LSA) will hold its Board Election as part of their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 10, 1995. Mr William Yorke, the current LSA President also runs the snack bar on a daily basis September 26, 1995 Page 4 SCHEDULED MATTERS Continued RELOCATION OF L.A.C. ACTIVITIES 0 Mr Davis details the Lynwood Activity Center's move to the Community Transit Center and Teen Center for the Commissioners The design meetings being held to discuss the new Teen Center are proving fruitful. Suggestions include, multi - purpose meeting rooms; wooden floors; high windows, sky lights, bright colors, picnic tables, low maintenance landscaping, and front entrance relocation PUBLIC ORALS Commissioner Heine stops in on his way to a Block Watch Meeting. He congratulates the Commission for all their hard work in the community COMMISSION ORALS PERTAINING TO AGENDA ITEMS ONLY Chairperson Mendoza - Apologized for not being at the meeting in August - He went on a trip to Oklahoma Commissioner Martini - Highly recommends the aqua aerobics class at the Natatorium - He would like to see photographs in "Lynwood in Perspective" Commissioner Espeseth - Inquired whether we could get a Sheriff's sub - station in Lynwood - She believes there were illegal yard sales being held during a recent weekend. Commissioner Lopez - No comment Commissioner Lara - No comment. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 7:00 p.m. to the next regularly scheduled meeting to be held at 6 :00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 1995 in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 11330 Sullis Road, Lynwood, California r&p /minutes
