COMMISSION MEETING
AUGUST 22, 1995
The Recreation and Parks Commission meeting of August 22, 1995 was
called to order by Commissioner Espeseth due to the absence of
Chairperson Mendoza and Vice Chairperson George Martini. The
Invocation was led by Commissioner Lara and the Pledge of
Allegiance was recited by Commissioner Espeseth.

Mr. Jim Given, Project Manager for the Recreation and Community
Services Department certified the posting of the agenda by the City
Clerk.
Commissioner Espeseth asked that -the minutes of the July 25
Recreation and Parks Commission meeting be approved Commissioner
Lara motioned to approve the minutes, Commissioner Lopez seconded
the motion, all were in agreement and the motion was so ordered.
CORRESPONDENCE
Mr Given requests permission to add an item of correspondence not
received in time for posting on the agenda. Commissioner Lara
moves that the item be added Commissioner Lopez seconds the
motion, and the item is added.
The non - profit group "One Step Forward" has requested permission to
utilize Mervyn Dymally Park five days per week between the hours of
12:00 noon and 2:00 p m to serve meals to eligible participants
In case of inclement weather, "One Step Forward" is requesting use
of the gym This group would also like to serve meals at Ham Park
beginning in October.
Jim informs the Commission that this program is non - profit, with no
charge to the participants and would be a supplement to our current
Summer food program operation.
Commissioner Espeseth moves that the "One Step Forward" meal
program be approved. Commissioner Lopez seconds the motion, the
ayes have it and the motion is approved

REVIEW RULES /REGULATIONS FOR PROGRAMS IN THE PARK

SEPTEMBER 16TH PROGRAM PROPOSAL
Pageantry Productions has proposed that a three -day celebration be
held on September 15, 16, and 17 to celebrate Latin American
Independence. This event would be sponsored by KWKW Radio Station
and Pageantry Productions in conjunction with the City of Lynwood
Various food booths, arts and crafts items, live entertainment and
a professional carnival would be offered.
REPORT ON VARIOUS GRANT REHAB PROJECTS
Hosler Jr. High School was awarded a $6,000 00 grant to fund an
afterschool program. This program would offer tutorial and
counseling services along with field trips to at -risk youth.
REPORT ON PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM
There is a performing arts program in progress at Lynwood High
School. This program features acting and dance classes, a music
workshop and voice lessons for youth 8 through 16 The classes are
being taught by teachers from the Compton Unified School District

Seniors ages 55 years and older, the City of Lynwood Recreation and
Community Services Department invites you to come along and join in
the fun to the Pomona Fairplex Fairgrounds on Wednesday,
September 20, 1995.
The motorcoach for this grand event will leave from the Lynwood
Community /Transit Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King, Jr.
Boulevard at 10:00 a.m. sharp (seniors please arrive at the center
1/2 hour early) and will return at 6:00 p.m.
The fee for this exciting trip is just.$8.00 per person (CASH ONLY)
which includes; admission.to the Pomona Fairplex Fairgrounds and
roundtrip transportation to and from Pomona and to the City of
Lynwood. Just as a reminder, it is also, "Lynwood`Day" at the
fair, so let's " Get Readv " Get Set and "Go!! " .... and support our
fantastic City by being there.

EXTRAVAGANZA DAY!
To get the year off to a great start, the Drill Team will host an
Extravaganza Day on Saturday, October 7, 1995 from 9:00 a.m. to
3:00 p.m. at the reservoir in Mervyn M. Dymally Park located at
3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Lynwood.

There will be workshops on drilling, exercise, hair, make -up,
dance, hygiene, pageantry judging for both parades and competition,
and a uniform and drum exhibit.
We urge all youngsters to come out and participate in the
Extravaganza Day,! We look forward to more registration this day
for both the Drill and Drum Squad.

"VOLUNTEER BASKETBALL COACHES NEEDED"
The Lynwood Sports Association Youth Basketball League and the
Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department is pleased to
announce that applications for volunteer coaches are now being
accepted for the upcoming 1995/1996 Youth Basketball season.
Coaches are needed for boys and girls teams. Participants ages
range from 5 through 16.
Coaches applications are available at the Lynwood Community/ Transit
Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in
