COMMISSION MEETING
JULY 25, 1995
The Recreation and Parks Commission meeting of July 25, 1995 was
called to order by Chairperson Mendoza, the Invocation was led by
Commissioner Lara and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by
Chairperson Espeseth.

Mr. Ralph W. Davis III, Director for the Recreation and Community
Services Department certified the posting of the agenda by the City
Clerk.
Chairperson Mendoza opened to approve the minutes of the June 27,
1995 Recreation and Parks Commission meeting. Commissioner
Espeseth motioned to approve the minutes, Commissioner Lara
seconded the motion, all were in agreement and the motion was so
ordered.
The Alcoholics Anonymous Group "Nuevo Amanecer" is requesting the
waiver of fees for the use of Bateman Hall's Auditorium. The group
would like to hold its 17th Anniversary meeting on October 29, 1995
from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Mr. Primitivo Perez, a representative from this group made this
request in Spanish. Commissioner Lara served as the .interpreter.
The Commission voted unanimously to waive the fees for the evening
portion of this event, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 P.M. The daytime
rental fees, cleaning deposit, and security coverage costs still
apply.
Commissioner Mendoza called for a motion on a request from Lorna
Hawkins of Drive -By Agony to have fees waived for the use of the
Gym every Friday for two hours beginning on July 21 and to use the
Lynwood Activity Center meeting room Monday through Thursday from
12:00 to 5:00 p.m. beginning on July 17 through September 29, 1995
for the S.A.F.E. Camp Program.

Commissioner Lara voted that this request be approved.
Commissioner Martini seconded the motion and the motion was so
ordered.

CURRENT PROGRAM REPORT
The Shetland Baseball Division, for .children five to seven years
old, will be honored with certificates at the next City Council
meeting. They won the West Long Beach Tournament in their
Division.
The Metro Green Line will open on Saturday, August 12, 1995. There
will be food vendors, information booths, and free rides on the
Metro Green Line. This event is being handled by the Community
Development Department.
There will be a Hispanic Heritage Celebration at the Lynwood
Library 'on Saturday, August 19th at 2:00 p.m.
Summer swim lessons are currently in progress at the Natatorium
Swim Complex.
The USTA National Jr. Tennis League is now underway for eight to
seventeen year old participants.
There will be a Seniors Brainstorming Luncheon on Wednesday, July
19 at Bateman Hall. This event is designed to evaluate seniors
needs and concerns.
There is a seniors bus trip planned to the Stateline Casino in Las
Vegas, Nevada on Monday, August 21.
Performing Arts Classes are being planned for youth in the City of
Lynwood. Also in the planning stages are September 16th and
Halloween Programs.

SCHEDULED MATTERS
REVIEW OF 11995/96 FISCAL YEAR BUDGET PROPOSAL
Mr. Davis gave a brief overview of the 95/96 budget and passed out
information relative to the budget breakdown.
JULY 4TH /UNITY FESTIVAL REPORT
The Unity Festival was a successful event. Next year will be the
City of Lynwood's 75th Birthday, a special celebration will be
planned for this occasion.
CURRENT GRANT PROJECT UPDATE
No update is available for the Teen Center, as John Oskoui of the
Facility Maintenance Department is out of his office.
STATUS OF LYNWOOD ACTIVITY CENTER LEASE
The Lynwood Activity Center lease is ending on August 31, 1995. A
letter requesting a continuance on the lease has been sent to Mr.
Chae, owner of the Marketplace property.
PUBLIC ORALS
Mr. Primitivo Perez of the Alcoholics Anonymous Group presented his
request (See Correspondence).
Mayor Pro Tem Louis Byrd stopped by with Mr. Lee, a Korean
businessman. Mr. Lee is conducting business with the City of
Lynwood.

Commissioner Martini - Attended an Aqua Aerobics class at the
Natatorium and really enjoyed it.
Commissioner Espeseth - Announced that Hosler Jr. High School
students are now wearing school uniforms.
Commissioner Lopez - Had a good time at the Lynwood Unity
Festival.

B. ACTIVITIES
JULY 4TH /UNITY FESTIVAL AND JULY 4TH FIREWORKS
Approximately 10,000 people attended this years Unity Festival.
The program was truly appreciated by all in attendance with a
multitude of entertainment provided, plus a variety of vendors
offering food and merchandise. The evening concluded with a
spectacular fireworks display.
JULY 6TH
The Lynwood Drill Team Awards Program was held at the Community
Transit Center with approximately 100 in attendance.
JULY 7 - 15
Youth Baseball Tournaments six teams from Lynwood participated in
various tournaments held regionally - The Shetland Division (ages
5 -7) won the West Long Beach Tournament.
JULY 8
A Boxing Exhibition was held at the Lynwood Activity Center with
four cities competing. Approximately 500 people were in
attendance.
JULY 23
The Southeast Municipal Athletic Federation Swim Meet was held in
Cerritos. Forty (40) children from Lynwood attended.
JULY 19
A Senior Citizens "Brainstorming" luncheon was held at Bateman
Hall. There were approximately 100 people in attendance.

The City of Lynwood Redteation and Community Services Department
Senior Citizen's Division is pleased to offer a variety of fun and
exciting FALL excursions for seniors ages 55 years and older.
Registration is now being taken for all excursions listed below on
a cash only basis. All registration is taken Monday through
Thursday from 7:00 a.m. -9:00 a.m., 12 noon -2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.-
6:00 p.m. at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center located at 3798
Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, in Lynwood. For more

Registration for all of the following excursions begins on Tuesday,

OLD - FASHIONED AUTUMN HARVEST TOUR - FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 22 1995
Get the gang together and spend an old- fashioned day in the
mountain community of Oak Glen! We'll first stop off at Parish
Pioneer Ranch where you'll find antique stores, barns brimming with
just - picked apples and more! Then, we head on up the road a piece
to one of the local family orchards. You'll feel like you've just
entered the set of "Little House on the Prairie" when you walk past
the pumpkin patch, cornfield and apple groves toward the log cabin,
barn and general store. When we arrive, you'll have a chance to

"press -yer -own" cider and "shuck -yer -own" corn, all the while,
munching on popcorn, chips and salsa! Then, you'll head inside the
barn where a terrific homestyle meal awaits your group with
downhome music provided by the Riley family. You'll be served BBQ
chicken, with baked potatoes, salad, copper caldron corn on the cob
(you shucked 'em!), ranch style beans, pan bread and your freshly -
pressed apple cider, plus apple pie for dessert! The day is
rounded out with a hayride around the ranch. The ranch also has a
general mercantile store with already picked apples for those who
don't want to pick their own
out of town at Los Rios Rancho

OKTOBERFEST AT OLD WORLD - THURSDAY OCTOBER 12 1995

Another Fall favorite is a trip to the Oktoberfest at Old World in
Huntington Beach. Upon arrival, you'll have time to stroll down
the cobblestone streets of the German village browsing through the
more than fifty European specialty shops. Then, you'll take your
reserved seats in the Festival Hall for an authentic Bavarian
buffet luncheon featuring all your German favorites including a
variety of salads, pork roast, chicken, bratwurst, mashed potatoes,
dumplings, vegetables and fresh apple strudel for dessert! You'll
also enjoy listening to the Oom -Pah bands which come to Old World
every year from Austria and Germany for the celebration.
Cost: $14.00 per person

PILGRIM FESTIVAL - FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 10, 1995
Celebrate the birth of our country at the 47th annual Pilgrim
Festival. Held at Pilgrim Place, this event features a bazaar and
craft fair with everything from plants and needlework to
handcrafted jewelry, stained glass and more. You'll also take a
ride on the "Mayflower -on- Wheels" for a guided tour around the
Pilgrim Place campus. An old- fashioned picnic lunch is included
midway through the day of the festival. The highlight of the
afternoon comes as you take a seat in front of the outdoor stage
for "The Pilgrim Story." 'This pageant depicts the story of the
Pilgrims from the time they left England until they arrived on the
Mayflower at-Plymouth.
Cost: $13.00 per person
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Remember dates and times for trips are subject to change. All
seats for trips are on a first come, first served basis. Plan your
calendars accordingly. In addition, please be advised there are no
refunds unless the City of Lynwood Recreation and Community
Services Department cancels any of the trips.
Make your reservations for the Hawaiian Luau scheduled for
R Thursday, September 28, 1995 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. at
Bateman Hall. This afternoon affair is free, it will give you a
glimpse of the fun and excitement that is planned for the upcoming
Hawaiian Cruise on January 13 -22, 1996.

Calling all Senior Citizens ages fifty -five (55) years and older!
The City of Lynwood's Recreation and Community Services Department
Senior Citizens Division invites you to become a member of the
Senior Choral Group. Ms. Donnie Chisholm is the Musical Director.
The Choral group meets every Monday at 12:30 p.m. in the Lynwood
Community Transit Center located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr.
Boulevard, in Lynwood.
We are looking for people who like to sing, read poetry, act, play
an instrument, or just like to have fun. The Choral group has been
' featured in several different programs for the City of Lynwood as

TENNIS TOURNAMENT
The Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department will host
it's 2nd Annual Tennis Tournament in honor of the late Richard
"Pancho" Gonzales during the week of September 9 -16, 1995. Matches
for men's and women's singles in the 12 and under, 13 -15, 16 -18,
Open and Seniors (50 +) age groups will be held at the Richard
"Pancho" Gonzales Tennis Courts located in the center of Mervyn M.
DymallY Park in Lynwood.
The entry fee is $10.00, payable in cash only and includes a
T- shirt. Registration begins Monday, August 21, 1995 and is being
accepted at the Lynwood Community /Transit Center located at 3798

1995/96 YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE
The City of Lynwood Recreation Department is now accepting
registration for the Lynwood Youth Soccer League for boys and
girls. There will be four (4) age groups: 6 -8 years (1987 - 1989),
9 -11 years (1984- 1986), 12 -14 years (1981 -1983) and 15 -16 years
(1979- 1980). All sign -ups will be taken at the Lynwood
Community %Transit Center, 3798 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in
Lynwood, Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. -9:00 a.m.,
12:00 noon -2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. -6:00 p.m. beginning Monday,
August 21, 1995 through Thursday, September 14, 1995.
All participants must show proof of birthdate at time of
registration unless the participant is already on file in the
Recreation Office. The registration fee is $30.00 (CASH ONLY),
which includes an award, insurance, and uniform. A discount
program for more than one participant in the immediate family is
being offered: first child $30.00, second child $25.00, third
child and thereafter $20.00. All participants must be registered
and all fees must be paid at the same time.

ARTS CLASSES OFFERED
The City of Lynwood Recreation and Community Services Department
in conjunction with the Lynwood Unified School District are pleased
to announce the AUGUST ARTS PROJECT. The Coordinator for the
August Arts Project is Melanie Andrews. This program will offer a
variety of Performing Arts Classes during the month of August. The
classes will include: Young Peoples Acting Workshop which will be
held Monday through Friday from August 7 through August 31, 1995
from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a m. at the Lynwood High School Auditorium.
The fee for this program is $25.00 per person. The program is for
ages 8 through 16. The instructor is Alvaretta M. Baxter,
elementary teacher from the Compton Unified School District.
An Instrumental Music Workshop will be held Monday through Friday
from August 7 through August 31, 1995 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
at the Lynwood High School Auditorium. The fee for this program is
$25.00 per person. The program is for ages 8 through 16. The
instructor for this program is Larry Cox II, Band Director at
Whaley Middle School from the Compton Unified School District.
A Voice Class for Young People will be held Monday through Friday
from August 7 through August 31, 1995 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
at the Lynwood High School Auditorium. The fee for this program is
$15.00 per person and is for youth ages 8 through 16. The
instructor is Larry Cox.

Hi! I'm Kelly your Drill Team Instructor. Drill Team registration
will begin on August 7, 1995 and I have so many new and exciting
ideas. To get the year off to a great start there will be a Drill
Team "Extravaganza Day" on Saturday, September 23, 1995 from 9:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the reservoir in Mervyn M. Dymally Park
located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. There will be a
workshop on drilling, dance and makeup, plus a drum and uniform
exhibit.
Guys don't
forget that
a
drill team
would not
exist
without
our drummers so please be
a
part of our
wonderful
program.
Our program is designed for youth ages 8 -15, and provides the
opportunity to learn the basic aspects of an organized Drill and
Drum Squad, and participate in a variety of competitions and other
exciting events not only in Lynwood but throughout the Los Angeles
area.
Our registration fee is $36.00 This fee does not include uniform
cost. The uniform cost will'be determined at our first meeting
which will be held at 5:30 p.m on Thursday, September 7, 1995 at
the Lynwood Community Transit Center 3798 Martin Luther King Jr.
Boulevard. Parents please plan on attending. Practices will be
held Mondays and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Other dates
and events will be announced at a later date.
