REGULAR MEETING OF THE WOMEN'S COMMISSION
CITY OF LYNWOOD
JANUARY 24
The regular meeting, of the Women's Commission of the City of
Lynwood, California was held-on Tuesday, January 24, 1995 at 3:00
p m., in the Conference Room of the Lynwood City Hall, 11330 Bullis
Road, Lynwood, California. The Agenda was duly posted as
prescribed by the Brown Act.
CALL TO ORDER
Mary Sue Lewis, Chair called the meeting to order at 3:10 p.m. roll
call was taken by Ms. Eugenia Zuno, Minute Clerk. Commissioners in
attendance were Dr. Betty Jackson, Della Mazziotti, Ethel Pacheco,
and Verna Culp. Also in attendance was staff liaison Carol De
Jesus, friend of the Commission Barbara Anthony, Elisabeth Dixon,
Councilman Heine and Ms. Edwards of the Watts Health Foundation
House of Uhuru.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mary Sue Lewis, Chairperson.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
'Motion was made by Commissioner Mazziotti and seconded by
Commissioner Dr. Jackson to approve the minutes of January 24, 1995
with a correction on paragraph 2 on the Report of NACW and ARRP
Community Resources Conference in Washington. Correction to state
Tresa rather then Treva.
COMMISSION'S FUTURE GOALS & OBJECTIVES
Commissioner Mazziotti informed the Commission of a Women Crisis
Center that serves Carson, Lynwood and other general areas.
Commissioner Mazziotti asked the Commission to support them. Dr.
Betty Jackson indicated that she was going to serve as a consultant
to this center.

Ms. Edwards and Elisabeth Dixon made a presentation on the House of
Uhuru. Ms. Dixon stated that this program gears women to education
as well as to learn to appreciate. She said the age racket is
between the age of 18 and 50 years of age. Children are in the
ages of 3 months, 9 months, 1 1/2, 5 and 6 years old. The age
limit for children is 8 years of age. Ms. Edwards explained that
women have to go through a mental and physical exam.
Ms Edwards and Ms. Dixon indicated that 50 women and 60 children
can be put in this facility The facility can take 110 people.
Commissioner Jackson asked if medical assistance is on site the
facility. Ms. Edwards said that medical, teachers, Child
Development, Counselors and Clerical Staff are stationed at this
facility. Ms. Edwards indicated that the facility's kitchen is
being remodeled and meals are currently prepared at the House of
Uhuru.
Commissioner Jackson suggested to negotiate with Saint Francis to
prepare the meals for this facility.
Commissioner Mazziotti and Staff Liaison Carol De Jesus suggested
a tour. Ms. Dixon indicated that they are not ready for tours but
as soon as they are they will notify the Commission.
STAFF ORALS
Commissioner Verna Culp gave a brief presentation of the NACW and
ARRP Conference in Washington D.C. She passed on information
relative to a Labor Law in which women can take sick leave in case
of any of her children getting ill. Ms. Culp also stated that to
do this one will require a Dr.'s report. She indicated that this
law is passed on 1996. Commissioner Culp said the speakers at this
conference were very outspoken and very good.
Commissioner Dr. Jackson informed the Commission that she was
appointed. to the NACW and that a meeting is scheduled for .February
9, 1995.
Commissioner Verna Culp foresaid that there is a need to raise
funds to make it possible to attend conferences Ms Dixon offered
her help to have fundraisers and stated that there is no excuse not
to raise funds. Ms. Dixon asked the Commissioners to bring 3 ideas
for fund raisers to the next Women's Commission Meeting
Dr Betty Jackson submitted a copy of NACW Board Agenda to Ms. De
Jesus, Staff Liaison. Ms. De Jesus presented this information to
the Commission and the members of the Commission suggested that an
agenda item be submitted to Council for approval of fund for travel
to attend Board Meetings.
Commissioner Dr. Jackson cordially invited the Commission to attend
the Walk of Fame. She indicated that the Walk of Fame is an
enshrinement of Honoraries. This is scheduled for February 23 at
10:30 a.m
