December 19, 2013Re:Pickleball use on existing tennis courts
Gene,
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee met last night. One area of discussion was the use of the tennis courts by pickleball players. The P&R advisory Board voted four to one to
allow two courts to be painted for pickleball use for the 2014 season. This was not endorsed by the tennis association for many reasons.
Earlier this month, I had met with the McCall Tennis Association (MCTA) to discuss a solution they would support. It was determined that they could support the same arrangement as last
summer with dual-use, specifically painting lines for pickleball on one south court, but tennis would maintain priority use of the court.
I have also met with pickleball supporters on numerous occasions. I worked with them to formulate a plan for construction of pickleball courts and a new basketball court in the area
of the existing basketball court. I have also met with the facilities manager, Matt Moss, at the McCall-Donnelly School District and reviewed this plan. He tentatively supports this
plan.
I have informed the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee and MCTA that I will continue with last year’s arrangement of having one court painted for pickleball and proceeding with
the plan for construction of new a new pickleball and basketball courts. It is my hope that public and private monies can be secured and that construction of a new facility will take
place in 2015. I realize that this is different than the recommendation of the P&R Advisory Committee and the wants of the pickleball supporters. I will be happy to discuss in detail
the reasons for my decision.
Dennis
