HomeMy Public PortalAbout89-100 (06-20-89)RESOLUTION NO. 89 -100 WHEREAS, military convoys continue to rumble through Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, where thousands of Pro - democracy students have sacrificed their lives as millions join in the fight for freedom. This tragic response to non - violent student demonstrations followed a period during which Chinese leadership exercised appropriate restraint; and WHEREAS, in light of the new wave of violence, President Bush has appealed for the reinstatement by the Chinese Government of the policy of restraint and an expression of support for the students who are offering up their own lives in the fight to bring democracy to China; and WHEREAS, all Americans were moved: by the student actions, which included the construction of the statue of the Goddess of Liberty and their call to "Give Me Democracy or Give Me Death," paraphrasing Patrick Henry's immortal "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death," which inspired America's quest for freedom; and WHEREAS, President Bush's indignation over the recent turn of events and his call on the Chinese Government to restore peace - -not by the brute force of storm trooper, but by granting of freedom to their people - -merit the support of the American Government and the American people; and WHEREAS, President Bush speaks for all Americans when he appeals to the Government of the People's Republic of China to grant the Chinese citizens freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, a free economy and right to free elections: ' THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, on .'behalf.:of the citizens of the City of Lynwood that the Lynwood City Council expresses its support of the position taken by President George Bush in his decisions to call upon China for a return to the policy restraint in dealing with the Student Freedom Fighters in Tiananmen Square; and to support the students' struggle for a democratic government and the right to a free press, a free economy, freedom of religion, free elections, and freedom to assemble. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council call on all citizens of Lynwood to pray in their churches) and synagogues for a return to peace in China's troubled cities in an environment that makes room for new waves of freedom to wash over the land.
