Certification of Agenda Posting by City Clerk COMMISSION /PUBLIC ORALS: ADJOURNMENT s c'� REGULAR MEETING JUNE 13, 1990 A regular meeting of the Lynwood Womens Commission was held in the VIP Room of Bateman Hall on the above date at 5:30 p.m. Chairman Della Mazziotti in the chair. Commissioners Dr. Betty Jackson, Ethel Pacheco, and Della Mazziotti answered the roll call. Commissioner Everlena McCown arrived at 5:40 p.m. Commissioner Verna Culp and Advisory Committee Chairman Elizabeth Dixon arrived at 5:50 p.m. Also in attendance were Barbrett Swift and Janice Smith. Elizabeth Dixon introduced Linda Thomas who would be coordinating fashion show for Membership Tea. It was noted the agenda had been posted in accordance with The Brown Act. Chairman Mazziotti discussed the Womens Commission submitting basic budget proposal to City Council. Dr: Jackson stated she was to work with City Clerk to put together a basic budget for the commission. Asked permission to bring item back. Discussion was held on the preparations for the Membership Tea. The date was changed due to Mr. Mandela visit. Dr. Jackson summarized her activities on project up to the present. Chairman Mazziotti elaborated on the National Womens Convention to be held in Long Beach, California on July 12, 1990. Discussion followed to confirm a date for the Membership Tea. Each commissioner expressed their views and opinions on setting Membership Tea on the starting date of the National Womens Convention. After discussion, A show of hands was taken resulting in five being in favor, two opposed and one abstention, to have the Lynwood Womens Commission Membership Tea on the 12th day of July, 1990. Advisory Chairman Dixon requested each commissioner submit ten names of women they wished to invite to the tea. It was suggested guest speakers for the occasion. Advisory Chairman stated she would attempt to have Margarite Archie - Hudson and Maxine Waters attend. Did not know if it would be possible as the calendars are usually made up far in Discussion followed on the food and decorations for the affair. Commissioner Pacheco would be in charge of the fashion show arrangements. Advisory Chairman displayed beautiful ribbon flowers in blue and gold in order to identify the Lynwood Womens Commissioners to the guests. Chairman Mazziotti spoke of in June. 'Stated an article appearing in the newspaper. 0 terms of two commissioners expiring about the Womens Commission would be Dr. Jackson stated she would not seek another term on the commission but would work with them in any way. Stated she had been appointed President of the National Association of Executive Females. Stated there were approximately 45 women members and the second meeting would be held July 28, 1990, in Bateman Hall at 5:30 p.m. There was no further business and it was moved by Commissioner McCown, seconded by Commissioner Pacheco to adjourn. I REGULAR MEETING MARCH 14, 1990 The Lynwood Womens Commission met in a regular session in Bateman Hall on the above date at 5:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Della Mazziotti. ROLL CALL: Commissioner Dr. Betty Jackson Commissioner Ethel Pacheco Chairman Della Mazziotti Also present were City Clerk Hooper and Minutes Clerk Warren. City Clerk announced the agenda had been duly posted in accordance with The Brown Act. Commissioner Culp and Commission Advisor Lorna Hawkins arrived at 5:40 p.m. ITEMS: Discussion followed on reception held March 2, 1990 at Bateman Hall for special guest in attendance, Diane Feinstein. Affair was well attended. Suggestions were made to make the next affair even more enjoyable. Commission Advisor Lorna Hawkins indicated the affair would be televised on Cable TV at a later date. Commissioner Dr. Jackson announced there would be telethon at Continental Cable on Saturday, March 17, 1990 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. to raise funds to help send children on an educational trip to Rome. Chairman Mazziotti called attention to request for "hotline cards" with commissioner's names and phone numbers. Also questioned badges being made each commissioner. Spoke on implementation of survey regarding sexual harassment in the workplace. Commission Advisor Janice Smith arrived at 5:50 p.m. Commission Advisor Elizabeth Dixon arrived at 6:00 p.m. Chairman Mazziotti requested each Commissioner consider a sub - committee they wished to chair. After discussion, the following was established: Commissioner Ethel Pacheco - Telephone Chairperson Commissioner Verna Culp - Treasurer Commissioner Dr. Betty Jackson - Ways & Mean Committee (Public Relations) Commission Advisors: Lorna Hawkins - Ways & Means Committee (Public Relations) Janice Smith - Ways & Means Committee (Public Relations) Elizabeth Dixon - Correspondence Secretary COMMISSION /PUBLIC ORALS: Cynthia Green - Geter, 3850 Virginia, briefed the commission on affair to be held March 22, 1990 for Councilwoman Evelyn Wells, 0 M who is running for 48th District Assembly seat. Requested an award or plaque from th Womens Commission on behalf of Mrs. Wells and extended an invitation to each commissioner to attend the affair. Commissioner Dr. Jackson discussed membership in the National Womens' Organization and the convention being held later this year. After discussion, It was moved by Commissioner Dr. Jackson, seconded by Commissioner Culp and carried, to have each member donate $10.00 towards dues to the National Womens' Organization in order to be a voting body at the National Convention. Commission Advisor Dixon discussed long range plans for fund - raisers for the Womens Commission. It was moved by Commissioner Dr. Jackson, seconded by Commissioner Culp and carried, to appoint Commission Advisor Elizabeth Dixon as Chairman of the Advisory , Commissioner Dr. Jackson informed the commission the Riverside County Womens Commission would be hosting a conference in Palm Springs on March 30, and 31, 1990. Stated the amount is $90.00 per person, and the hotel is $80.00 per night. Questioned if some of the commissioners could attend. Was informed Council /City policy was to allow one commissioner to attend with the city paying the bill. Commission members presented plaque to City Clerk for service to the commission. It was decided by unanimous consent, Commissioner Dr. Jackson and Commissioner Culp would attend the conference in Palm Springs on March 30 and 31, 1990. It was moved by Commissioner Dr. Jackson, seconded by Commissioner Pacheco to approve plaque honoring Councilwoman Evelyn Wells. There was no further business and it was moved by Chairman Mazziotti, seconded by Commissioner Pacheco and carried, to adjourn at 6:25 p.m. Respectfully submitted, - 4V'4'C' MARL ET A. Guests in attendance were Clara Howard and Councilmember Rea. Commission Advisors Elizabeth Dixon, Janice Smith, and Lorna Hawkins were also in attendance. Chairman Mazziotti read a Valentine poem. Commissioner Pacheco distributed list of local businesses and churches to each commissioner. Chairman Mazziotti distributes list of emergency organizations and discussed formation of an emergency hotline list of commissioners names and phone numbers for the benefit of battered women in need of assistance. Chairman Mazziotti discussed Womens Commission having badges made up for identificaton purposes for the commissioners. Councilmember Rea stated he would speak to City Manager regarding badges for Womens Commission. Commissioner Everlena McCown arrived at 5:47 p.m. Commissioner Verna Culp arrived at 6:30 p.m. Chairman Mazziotti discussed March, 1990, being Womens Month. Stated reception would be held March 2, 1990, at Bateman hall with special guest being Diane Feinstein. Elaborated on number of groups that had been invited. Discussion followed on program and decorations for the affair.- Councilmember Rea discussed malathion spraying in the city and the possible health risks involved. Spoke on number of issues still on the law books that are unfair to women. Also discussed Womens Commission being supportive of female Firefighters in the city. There was no further business and it was moved by Commissioner McCown, seconded by Commissioner Pacheco and carried to adjourn at 6 :50 p.m. Respectfully s mitted, M R RET A.
