ON MONDAY, JANUARY 28, 2008 CITY OF LYNWOOD VETERANS AFFAIRS COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES October 22, 2007 I. CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson John Beimer called the Veterans Affairs Council Meeting to order at 5:07 p.m. II. INVOCATION: Board Member Charles Wood led the Invocation. III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Board Member Ford led the Pledge of Allegiance. IV. ROLL CALL: CHAIRPERSON BEIMER - Present BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA- Present BOARD MEMBER WOOD - Present BOARD MEMBER PEREZ - Absent BOARD MEMBER FORD - Present BOARD MEMBER CALDERON - Absent BOARD MEMBER WILLIAMS - Absent BOARD MEMBER GUTIERREZ - Absent V. AGENDA POSTING: The agenda was duly posted by the City Clerk for the October meeting. VI. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Chairperson Beimer calls for a motion on the minutes for September 2007. Board Member Wood motions that the minutes be approved. Board Member Mendoza seconds the motion. All members vote unanimously for approval of the minutes and the motion is passed. VII. INFORMATION ITEMS: None VIII. SCHEDULED MATTERS: A. VETERANS MEMORIAL MONUMENT UPDATE - Mr. Jose Trejo, Interim Deputy Director of Recreation passed out a sample flier for one of the plaques to be displayed on the Veterans Memorial Monument. This plaque will list the Veterans names, the City Seal and the date of the dedication ceremony. Board Member Wood suggested adding the branch of the military in which each Veteran has served. That information will be added as well. Another plaque is 20" x Io with a rendering of troops and will include a message to all Veterans. Mr. Trejo stated that the VETERANS MEMORIAL MONUMENT UPDATE - Continued vendor is having a challenge with the rendering on the plaque. The plaque must be custom sized to fit the monument. The recommended material to be used is marble. Plaques made of wood or brass have a tendency to corrode over time when exposed to the elements. Mr. Trejo stated that the Veterans have been working on this project for the last eight years hoping to receive the recognition they deserve in the community. The Board Members proceeded to discuss who should and should not be mentioned by name on the plaque. By general consent the Board Members concluded that only the names of the original group working towards obtaining a monument for the City of Lynwood should be mentioned by name on the plaque. This excludes new members and those that have dropped out of the Veterans Affairs Council. VETERANS DAY PROGRAM - Thursday, 11.8.07 - Mr. Trejo stated that invitations for the Veterans Day Ceremony will go out this coming week. A press release has been distributed to the media through the Marketing and Grants Department. The local paper, "Lynwood `n Perspective" should carry the information in the November issue. The ceremony will begin at 10:0o a.m. sharp. Chairperson Beimer stated that Board Member Wood will serve as the Master of Ceremony. The Hollydale Chaplain will lead the invocation; he will also lead the prayer at the unveiling ceremony. Chairperson Beimer stated that he will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Hollydale Post 723 will participate by providing their Colorguard to parade the colors. The City Manager, Council and other City dignitaries will be introduced. The Mayor and Veterans Affairs Council Board Members will lay the wreath of flowers. Board Member Wood will provide readings and guest speakers. The monument will be unveiled with the Board Members gathered around the monument for a short prayer by the Chaplain and a brief reading by Board Member Wood. Board Member Wood stated that the City of Montebello is also available to perform taps, 21 -gun salute, and a bugler for revelry. However, these activities are not needed for this event. The floral wreath has been ordered as well as snacks and refreshments for the guests. Mr. Trejo stated that it is a challenge to get youth involved during school hours but he will invite Mario Gutierrez to bring the Young Marines to the event as VETERANS DAY PROGRAM - Continued a field trip. The Veterans Day Ceremony will be in memoriam of the late Willard Hawn Reed. The late Board Member Reed always came to the Veterans Affairs Council meetings; even when very ill. Board Member Reed's family will be contacted to attend the ceremony. IX. PUBLIC ORALS: Irene Garcia, 2737 111 Street stated that the Lynwood Library might have a patriotic CD available for use at the Veterans Day Ceremony. X. BOARD MEMBER ORALS: ➢ WOOD - He stated that Council asked if this recognition is going to be enough for the Veterans. He announced that Dr. Hanan of "World Literacy Crusade" has obtained a grant and is working on a Veterans Park that will be located underneath the io5 Freeway in Lynwood. Board Members Wood and Mendoza will be called for their input when necessary. Board Member Wood stated that he saw his cousin's son graduate from the U.S. Marine Corps boot camp. ➢ FORD - He's trying to catch up on everything since he hasn't been participating in the monthly meetings. ➢ PEREZ - Absent ➢ CALDERON - Absent ➢ MENDOZA - He stated that the plans for the Veterans Day program are good. He asks Mr. Trejo if he's ever done anything like this before. Mr. Trejo responded that this is the first time he's been involved with Veterans activities. Board Member Mendoza suggested asking former Mayor Louis Byrd to join the group since he is a Veteran. ➢ WILLIAMS -Absent ➢ BEIMER - Leo Rodriguez, former City of Lynwood employee and fellow Veteran will be invited to attend the ceremony on 11/8/07. XI.
