VIII. SCHEDULED MATTERS:
A. VETERANS MEMORIAL MONUMENT UPDATE - Mr. Jose
Trejo, Interim Deputy Director of Recreation passed out a sample
flier for one of the plaques to be displayed on the Veterans
Memorial Monument. This plaque will list the Veterans names,
the City Seal and the date of the dedication ceremony. Board
Member Wood suggested adding the branch of the military in
which each Veteran has served. That information will be added as
well. Another plaque is 20" x Io with a rendering of troops and
will include a message to all Veterans. Mr. Trejo stated that the
VETERANS MEMORIAL MONUMENT UPDATE - Continued
vendor is having a challenge with the rendering on the plaque.
The plaque must be custom sized to fit the monument. The
recommended material to be used is marble. Plaques made of
wood or brass have a tendency to corrode over time when exposed
to the elements. Mr. Trejo stated that the Veterans have been
working on this project for the last eight years hoping to receive
the recognition they deserve in the community. The Board
Members proceeded to discuss who should and should not be
mentioned by name on the plaque. By general consent the Board
Members concluded that only the names of the original group
working towards obtaining a monument for the City of Lynwood
should be mentioned by name on the plaque. This excludes new
members and those that have dropped out of the Veterans Affairs
Council.
VETERANS DAY PROGRAM - Thursday, 11.8.07 - Mr. Trejo
stated that invitations for the Veterans Day Ceremony will go out
this coming week. A press release has been distributed to the
media through the Marketing and Grants Department. The local
paper, "Lynwood `n Perspective" should carry the information in
the November issue. The ceremony will begin at 10:0o a.m. sharp.
Chairperson Beimer stated that Board Member Wood will serve as
the Master of Ceremony. The Hollydale Chaplain will lead the
invocation; he will also lead the prayer at the unveiling ceremony.
Chairperson Beimer stated that he will lead the Pledge of
Allegiance. Hollydale Post 723 will participate by providing their
Colorguard to parade the colors. The City Manager, Council and
other City dignitaries will be introduced. The Mayor and
Veterans Affairs Council Board Members will lay the wreath of
flowers. Board Member Wood will provide readings and guest
speakers. The monument will be unveiled with the Board
Members gathered around the monument for a short prayer by the
Chaplain and a brief reading by Board Member Wood. Board
Member Wood stated that the City of Montebello is also available
to perform taps, 21 -gun salute, and a bugler for revelry. However,
these activities are not needed for this event. The floral wreath
has been ordered as well as snacks and refreshments for the guests.
Mr. Trejo stated that it is a challenge to get youth involved during
school hours but he will invite Mario Gutierrez to bring the Young
Marines to the event as
VETERANS DAY PROGRAM - Continued
a field trip. The Veterans Day Ceremony will be in memoriam of
