COMMUNITIES OF STRENGTH. MAY 2021
W"411t M4YI
Although Spring technically begins in March, it seems to really make its mark
here in May. The flowers and trees are in bloom (and allergies!), the breezes
are warmer, and many of us are eager to get outside for a longer walk and
some sunshine. Nationally, the month of May is also recognized as Older
Americans Month and has been a time to acknowledge the contributions,
experience, and resilience of past and current older persons to our country. We
have witnessed this year's Older Americans Month theme of "Communities of
Strength" right here in Watertown during the pandemic. You have shared
strength in large measure... by making face masks and showing others how to
do so, by being strong and patient during quarantine, by picking up and
delivering food and supplies to neighbors in need, by teaching a friend how to
use Zoom, and by checking in on each other to say hello to help break up the
isolation so many have experienced. We acknowledge and celebrate all of your
generous efforts and acts of kindness.
We hope to "see" you on a Zoom program or at our grab-n-go event this month.
We are also looking to develop more small groups focused on particular topics
to share lively discussions, such as a travel group, a new retirees group, and a
group devoted to issues about aging alone. In honor of Mother's Day, during
my Coffee with the Director Zoom on May 18, 1 invite you to join us to share
memories of your mother, your own mothering years, or of anyone else who
has been an important influence in your life.
Cheers!

popular music of the war years (1914-1918) with audio
and video clips. Prior to American involvement, British
war songs were popular in this country like It's a Long,
Long Way from Tipperary and Keep the Home Fires
Burning. Then, as events began to draw us into this
"war to end all wars", opposing viewpoints were
expressed in popular songs, like the pacifistic I Didn't
Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier and the militaristic Wake
Up, America! And the biggest wartime favorite of all,
George M. Cohan's Over There.

Watertown Senior Center Art Class June 2021 Exhibition
bU Doiww scaLtreto
Even during the pandemic, the artists of the Monday Morning Art Class continue to express
their creativity and create beautiful artwork. Meeting each Monday virtually via Zoom clas-
ses with their teacher, Dawn Evans Scaltreto, the students learn new techniques, share im-
ages of their artwork and catch up with friends. The artists look forward to an Annual Ex-
hibit each year when their artworks go on display. In 2020, the Watertown Senior Center
staff created a virtual exhibit in the newsletter much to the delight of the students!
The artists are preparing their best works to do this exhibit again this year. They were excit-
ed to reach a more diverse audience through the newsletter and Facebook pages, and view-
ers were surprised at the creativity displayed in the colorful artworks. The exhibit will take
place in the June Newsletter and online. If you have an interest in joining the class, all are
welcome whether you are a beginner or experienced artist. All media is explored. Come
and meet a warm and supportive community of creative artists ready to welcome you, an( -
participate in our delightful upcoming exhibition.

The Lunch and Laughter Club
June 2nd, 2:00 pm on Zoom
I oaV V1,e DIASUVI,
F- When was the last time you laughed? What was happening then? For me, it was a news sto-
ry this morning about the President's German Shepherd, Major. Major has a behavior prob-
lern — no doubt you've heard about it. It was reported that he bit several people, one of
whom was a secret service agent. No, that wasn't what I thought was funny. It was the
newscaster's comment: The cat has a plan. I love cats, and I'm a fan of the TV show, My Cat
From Hell". Cats are highly intelligent and understand behavior, both human and animal. Sometimes they
use their intelligence to manipulate behavior. I can just picture what might be going on. I'm sure you can
too. I laughed aloud.
The thing about laughing is that it makes you feel better. This started out as a gloomy day, but it seemed so
much brighter after I laughed. I went out for a walk and thoroughly enjoyed it, despite the clouds overhead.
There were signs of spring popping up everywhere. Buds on trees, bulbs shooting up, and birds singing their
courtship songs. If I had not laughed earlier, I wonder how much of that I would have missed?
I'm sure everyone has funny stories, present or past. They may be stories we have heard, or they may be
more personal. The best stories are often those that we have experienced ourselves. I'll bet you have some
great stories that you could share. Please join us on June 4th at 1:00 pm on Zoom for the first "Lunch and
Laughter Club". BYOL (bring your own lunch) and your best funny stories.
