Guest speaker, Charlotte Lesser, President, Los Angeles County Commission on Women was
introduced by staff to members, She explained that the 15 member LA County Commission
represented all areas of the county and that they were the voice for the county's five million
women. The commission sees its role as one of listening and collaborating with women in the
county. It is not funded per say by the county, but they work closely with the Board of
Supervisors and two staff positions are assigned to the commission.
Two of their major events include the annual awards luncheon were recognition is given to
exceptional LA County women and the 5K Run and Walk. The funds generated from the 5K
Run gives incarcerated women an opportunity to pursue an education. The commission has a
"Cut it Out" Program that uses hair stylist as aids in identify and assisting with domestic
violence. Proctor and Gamble has partnered with the commission to underwrite free
osteoporosis screening for low- income women during a fall health fair Charlotte invited
members to attend the November 2 quarterly meeting of the Association of CA Commissions for
Women in Santa Monica.
Chair Araujo and all members thanked Charlotte Lesser for her informative presentation. Chair
Araujo said the commission is on a new path to look at Lynwood women's problems and find
programs used by other commissions that can be used to solve them. Charlotte Lesser was asked
if the LA County Women's Commission had a budget. She replied that members received a $25
gas stipend for meetings, but they did not have a line item in the County budget. Of the 100 Los
Angeles County Commissions, the Women's Commission is one of the most active.
Chair Araujo suggested that the Commission should report to the City Council so they are aware
that the members would like to raise funds for their programs. Commissioner Lewis asked
Charlotte Lesser how the LA County Commission created their agenda for the year Lesser
replied that during their annual retreat members reviewed data regarding current women's issues
in LA County and decided which ones they would like to address.
Chair Araujo suggested that maybe the City could rent a van to take members to the Nov 2
meeting. She mentioned forming a committee structure within the commission. Lorene Reid,
Friend, thanked Charlotte Lesser for speaking to the Commission and Friends.
Laura Alderete reminded members of the October 12 Habitat for Humanity Build Day to build
the house on Louise Street. Questions were asked by members regarding the day and time of the
event. Members were asked to assist with recruitment of approximately 30 people.
Laura Alderete passed out copies of a press release on national recognition for a documentary
film produced by the New Mexico Commission on the Status of Women.
Laura Alderte discussed the upcoming November 7` Women's Health Luncheon
Commissioner Herron wanted to know why the event date had been changed from late October
to early November. Staff replied that there was a conflict with the October date and it had to be
changed. Commissioner Plummer -Jones suggested that staff contact Kaiser Permanente for
possible speakers. Commissioner Lewis said that she needed to know if changes were being
made to commission activities or if the by -laws of the commission had been changed.
Chair Araujo mentioned that they all needed to look out for each other as a commission. She
mentioned that the commission did not have to re- invent the wheel in terms of programs. There
were plenty of existing programs that could work in Lynwood. 'Laura Alderete mentioned that
staff can take commissioner's ideas to the Mayor, City Council and City Manager She
explained to members and Friends that the Commission's primarily role is advisory to the Mayor
and City Council. Lorene Reed mentioned that the Commission agenda should include time for
Public Orals.
Chair Araujo called for a motion to adjourn the meeting. The motion was moved by
Commissioner Pacheco and seconded by Commissioner Herron to adjourn the meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 4 PM.
