OF LYNWOOD COMMENDING HENRY VAN COMPERNOLLE
AND ARCHIE LEGG IN THE MATTER OF OPPOSITION
TO ASSEMBLY DISTRICT REAPPORTIONMENT,
WHEREAS, the reapportionment plan proposed by the Assembly'
Committee on Elections and Reapportionment would have removed the
City of Lynwood from association with all other small southeast cities
with which they have common bonds of interest, and would have placed
it in a metropolitan area, and
WHEREAS, this would have resulted in creating an Assembly
district, the components of which had no common problems and similar
interests, and would have caused a separation of an area long unified
in representation and community interests, and
WHEREAS, the City of Lynwood is a natural part of the cities
in the southeast area, representing a sizable block of small cities ,
which for many years have met together to study and solve common
problems of municipal government, including mutual aid aid among fire
and police departments relating to disaster, and planning, transpor-
tation, and education, and
WHEREAS, Henry Van Compernolle and Archie Legg, acting on;
behalf of civic groups, gave unstintingly of their time in opposing
the reapportionment as originally proposed, and
WHEREAS, Henry Van Compernolle and Archie Legg, at great
personal sacrifice, devoted a great deal of time and energy to securing
for the City of Lynwood a more acceptable plan for reapportionment, even
to the extent of traveling, on two occasions, to the State Capital,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Lynwood that Henry Van Compernolle and Archie Legg be commended
for their generous contribution of time and effort in behalf of the
citizens of this City.
