April 2021
Thank you Volunteers!
April is National Volunteer Recognition Month and like last year, we unfortunately will not
be able to have an in -person celebration, but we extend our heartfelt thanks to the many
individuals who have helped friends, neighbors, and strangers throughout this time of
COVID-19. We appreciate those who have made calls to check -in and cheer people; who
have taught others how to use Zoom; who have labeled, folded and stapled monthly news-
letters; who have prepared birthday greetings; who have picked up or delivered food and
supplies; who have coordinated food drives; who have spent time at the Food Pantry,
greeting people and packing and distributing grocery bags; who have shopped for others
and delivered items to homes; who have driven people to doctors' offices or grocery stores;
and who have helped to schedule vaccine appointments ... you have all been extraordinary
during this time of great need and, we thank you for your kindness, your generosity, and for
being brave for others in the midst of this pandemic. We appreciate all you have done for
our community. Thank you!
As we move towards warmer months, my hope is to plan more outdoor activities. We have
another Spring Grab-n-Go lunch event scheduled for April. Our grab-n-gos are very popular
and it's been a nice way to see everyone, even just briefly, during the drive-thru time in
front of the Senior Center. If you haven't tried one yet, we encourage you to do so. If you
would like to get out to the store, the Senior Shuttle Bus is making trips to the Stop and
Shop on Watertown Street throughout the week, in addition to runs to Target, Marshalls
and Market Basket. Please call us to schedule your ride. To maintain safe distancing, the bus
capacity is limited to 4 riders plus the driver.
Vaccines. I am pleased to hear that so many of you have received at least the first shot, and
some of you have received both. I also know that others have yet to receive any and how
frustrating the situation is. The Governor's 2-1-1 hotline is still staffed each day, 8:30 AM —
5:00 PM to answer questions, provide support and book appointments as vaccines are
made available. CVS is another resource and can be contacted by calling (800) 746-7287 or
online at www.cvs.com. While obtaining a vaccine appointment can be difficult, be assured
that more appointments are being added every day.
It's been one year since we closed our doors and I have hope that we are inching closer to a
new and better normal. Know we continue our work here to keep you informed, suppdW- ee-d;
and hopefully entertained with our programs offered on these pages, and we keep lool.s
forward to our in -person times together!

rW1doom Music History: Big Band
Swing, Part One with John Clark
1 Wednesday, April 15 at 2:00 pm
The Big Band era officially started
in the summer of 1935 but the transition from hot jazz
and Dixieland had begun much earlier in the decade.
We'll trace the roots c:f Big Band music, including the
back story of the King of Swing himself, Benny
Goodman. The last third of the program will be
devoted to the most popular bandleader of this period,
Glenn Miller with 22 chart -topping songs from 1939-
1943. You'll learn the origins of the unmistakable Glenn
Miller sound heard in his theme song, Moonlight
Serenade and see performances of his biggest hits like
In the Mood and Chattanooga Choo Choo. There's even
footage of Glenn leading the 50-piece Army Air Force
Band in the summer of 1944, just months before he
boarded the flight to France that took his life. For ten
years jazz became America's popular music and you're
invited to experience two of its biggest stars.

bU Dnwvk. scR treto - w
Even during the pandemic, the artists of the Monday Morning Art Class continue to express
their creativity and create beautiful artwork. Meeting each Monday virtually via Zoom clas-
ses with their teacher, Dawn Evans Scaltreto, the students learn new techniques, share im-

staff created a virtual exhibit in the newsletter much to the delight of the students!
The artists are preparing their best works to do this exhibit again this year. They were exo ,-
ed to reach a more diverse audience through the newsletter and Facebook pages, and view-
ers were surprised at the creativity displayed in the colorful artworks. The exhibit will take
place in the June Newsletter and online. If you have an interest in joining the class, all are
welcome whether you are a beginner or experienced artist. All media is explored. Come

Zoom Nistory of 7950s Music:
Rhythm & Blues w John Clark
Thursday, April 29 at 2.00 pm
The tail -end of the 1940s marked
the death of big bands, the beginnings of be -bop and
the start of cool jazz_ The fifties birthed and developed
a variety of jazz subgenres and Miles Davis was a cata-
lytic figure for many of them (bandleader for landmark
Birth of the Cool.
Important musicians from the cool school were Gerry
Mulligan, Dave Brubeck and the Modern Jazz Quartet.
In addition to Miles (with early John Coltrane), the hard
boppers included Sonny Rollins, Clifford Brown and
Horace Silver. Kind of Blue's modal jazz (Miles again!)
was the decade's best-selling album and helped launch
the solo career of John Coltrane.
Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk almost defied
categorization and Ornette Coleman's free jazz chal-
lenged everyone. Lambert, Hendricks & Ross added
their unique style of vocal gymnastics at the end. All in
all, a fascinating and defining decade for Jazz.
