HomeMy Public PortalAbout160_030_20140311BicyclePedestrianCommitteeNotes Bicycle/ Pedestrian Friendly Committee Notes from March 11, 2014 meeting ATTENDEES: Sunni Brown, Bill Garbett, Paul Wolff, Diane Schleicher, Chantel Morton, Bruce Saunders, Michael Bodine, John Bennett, Vicki Worden and Joe Wilson Ms. Brown called the meeting to order. Mr. Garbett moved to approve the minutes from the last meeting. Mr. Wolff seconded. The minutes were approved. Old Business: Update on Bicycle/Pedestrian Path —North of Hwy 80 Ms. Schleicher stated that it is going through Infrastructure Committee. There are a lot of environmental issues such as wetlands and marsh buffer. A good bit of boardwalk will have to be installed. Ms. Schleicher said that there are easements and ROW to consider. Georgia Power will need 15 feet of clearance. Ms. Schleicher said that the path is in the design phase. Thomas and Hutton is going for an environmental permit to get a variance from the Core of Engineers. She explained that DNR will use guidance from the CORE as it is more restrictive. It is a long process with a minimum of six months. She stated that before construction, the City will make sure that there are no restrictions with historic preservation. Ms. Schleicher said that there is a TAP grant out there with 80/20 split. II. Discuss possible dates for a Tybee Island Youth Bicycle Rally Ms. Schleicher stated that the Youth Bicycle Rally dates will be changed. The dates will be coordinated with the YMCA. She said that fall is better. Mr. Bennett said that fall is better for Savannah Bicycle. October 11 is not a good date. New Business: I. Discuss better ways to mark bicycle/sidewalk between S. Jones and 2nd Avenue Mr. Wolff suggested sharrows on the sidewalk between Jones and 2nd, so that bicyclists will know that is where they are supposed to go. Mr. Wilson said that he will use white paint for the sharrows. He explained that DOT has rules for certain colors. Mr. Wilson will handle marking the sidewalk. II. YMCA Kids Triathlon planned for September 2014 Ms. Schleicher said that it is not nailed down yet. She said that it will be limited to 60 kids.They are thinking about paddle boarding at Alley 3, biking back river streets and then run. She said the bike inspection and helmet inspections were some of the thoughts. Sharon S. Shaver The committee continued discussion of the triathlon. Ms. Brown asked about the GDOT flashing pedestrian lights at crosswalks. Ms. Schleicher explained that they would be installed between McKenzie and Sixteenth Streets. She explained that there will be a push button that will flash on both sides. The committee discussed the crosswalks. Ms. Schleicher said that DOT is getting rid of the islands, other than at McKenzie. She said that the target date is June to begin installation. Mr. Wolff made a motion to adjourn.
