September 2020
MISSION STATEMENT: To support and advocate for older adults and their families by
providing programs, services and resources that promote independent living and quality of life.
September is National Senior Center Month
Although we cannot celebrate this month, I want to take
this time to reflect on this year’s theme, which is “Senior
Centers: Delivering Vital Connections!” How did they
pick this year’s theme not knowing that we would be
dealing with a pandemic? And, how true is it that Senior
Centers across this nation are trying to deliver vital
connections for our senior population?
All of the staff here at your Brewster Senior Center are
anxiously waiting for the day that we can open our doors
and get back to normal. Our purpose is to help you live
your life well but, in return, that is exactly
what you do for us. Thank you!
Denise Rego, Director

passing out delicious ice-cream treats to
our Brewster senior community in our
parking lot. Swing by, stay in your car and say ‘hi’! It’s a
chance for you to see us, with our masks on, and for us to
see you too! We’ve missed you!

Upcoming Programs
Please stay tuned for presentations that will be aired on Channel 18, the COA website, the Town of
Brewster website and the Town of Brewster Facebook page. See below for current presentations offered.
The dates for the airing will be posted on our COA and Town websites, and our new bulletin board
outside the COA.
Passing the Torch by Financial Advisor Bob Mauterstock: This presentation will address
such critical areas as having a family meeting, long-term care planning and legal planning. People will
leave the program with the tools to get their affairs in order and communicate clearly with their
children.
The following programs will all be presented by Larry Dapsis, Cape Cod Entomologist:
Ticks; One Bite Can Change Your Life:
This program will review the basic life cycle and ecology of deer, dog and lone star ticks. A three -point
protection plan will be presented: Protect Yourself, Protect Your Yard and Protect Your Pet.
Tick-borne diseases are preventable.
Pollen Ecology:
Honeybees, both locally and nationally, have been suffering catastrophic losses. This program will
review honey bee biology and the factors responsible for the problem. In addition, we will review the
state of wild pollinators like bumble bees and the things residents can do to help them. Many of the
fruits and vegetables we eat require pollination.
Edible Insects:
Insects are part of many diets around the world with the exception of North America and Europe. There
are a number of valid reasons to consider rethinking our attitude about insect-based foods including
sustainability and nutrition. Don’t worry - we won't make you go and dig for worms and cook them up
during this webinar, but you may consider these creatures culinary treats after this talk!

Pop-Up Census Event
Thursday, September 3 11:00am to 3:00pm
Brewster COA/Fire Station Parking Lot 1673 Main Street
The 2020 Census is underway. Data collected in the census will inform the
distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds to states and
communities like ours each year for the next 10 years for things like health
care, food assistance and infrastructure.
The Brewster COA has been notified by the US Census Bureau that many people in our community have
not completed their census. Certainly, the pandemic had folks worrying about other things. However,
low census response could have serious impact on the funding for many programs here in Brewster.
There is still time to complete the census! There will be a pop-up event on Thursday, September 3, from
11:00am - 3:00pm in the COA/Fire Station Parking lot. Census volunteers will be on hand to help you
safely fill out your 2020 Census. If you didn’t complete the census, now is the time to do so and it will
only take a few minutes of your time. All data collected is confidential.
Don’t feel like driving to the COA? No worries! Complete the Census online at www.2020census.gov
Everyone’s response counts!

Important Update from the Massachusetts RMV - Driver’s License Renewal for 75+
For those seniors who are 75 years or older and have an expiring 2020 license or ID card, the RMV has
applied several automatic extensions to the expiration dates, typically coinciding with an individual ’s
birth date, to prevent them from having to visit the RMV earlier this summer. The RMV is not planning
on being open prior to September for in-person visits except in special circumstances. Here is the new
list of extensions:
Driver’s licenses and ID cards that expired or in March, April, and May 2020, will now expire in
September 2020.
● Driver’s licenses and ID cards that expired in June have been extended until October 2020.
● Driver’s licenses and ID cards that expired in July have been extended until November 2020.
● Driver’s licenses and ID cards that expired in August have been extended until December 2020.
State law mandates that license holders 75 and older complete their driver’s license renewal in-person
to present a vision screening certificate or take an eye exam.
For more information on extensions, or to verify their current expiration date, customers should visit
Mass.gov/RMV and login to their myRMV account.

TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION
MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS
We are now beginning to offer medical rides from our local area to as far as
Hyannis for routine doctor’s appointments on Mondays and Wednesdays.
There will be 1 ride per day, with 1 client getting the ride to their appointment.
All safety precautions, such as social distancing, hygiene protocol and
cleaning/disinfecting, will be strictly reinforced. Due to these protocols, our
ability to offer rides will be considerably reduced, so we encourage you to have
an alternative method of transportation available. Appointments should be
booked for times between 9:00am and 2:00pm.
Please call the COA at 508-896-2737 as soon as you make an appointment
or at least four business days (Monday thru Friday) in advance so that we
can schedule your ride. Please notify the COA if you can’t keep your
appointment so we can notify our drivers. Donations are accepted for this
service. Our van is wheelchair-accessible.
