Whereas: The City of Boston has been selected as the applicant city from the United States by the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) to compete to host the 2024 Summer Olympics and the
Paralympics; and
Whereas: The City of Boston in cooperation with the State and surrounding communities and under the
auspices of Boston 2024, a group composed of business and civic leaders, will develop a proposal for
submission to the IOC between September 15, 2015 and January 8, 2016; and
Whereas: Boston 2024 has tentatively identify facilities outside the City of Boston for various Olympic
competitions; and
Whereas: Cities and towns surrounding Boston, including Watertown, will be impacted by the Olympics
and may be in the position to contribute to Boston 2024’s plans in terms of housing, transportation and
recreational facilities;
Therefore, I make the following motion:
The Town Council President in cooperation with the President of the School Committee and the Town
Manager create an Ad Hoc Watertown Olympic Committee composed of:
- Three members of the Town Council
- Two members of the School Committee
- Two members of the Town Administration
- A representative of the Watertown-Belmont Chamber of Commerce
- A representative of Belmont-Watertown Local First
- Eight Watertown residents with experience, expertise or interest in planning and
community development, municipal finance, public transit and transportation, athletics
and recreation, or related areas.
The Ad Hoc Watertown Olympic Committee will represent the interest of Watertown, its schools,
businesses, civic and non-profit organizations and its residents with regard to the development of plans
for the City of Boston to compete to host the 2024 Summer Olympics and the Paralympics.
The Ad Hoc committee would abide by the Opening Meeting Law.
