COMMISSIONER'S /PUBLIC ORALS ADJOURNMENT Motion to adjourn to a Regular Meeting for June 9, 1993 at 5:30 P.M. in the Conference Room at City Hall. 0 LYNWOOD WOMEN'S COMMISSION MEETING OF APRIL 14, 1993 The regular meeting of the Women's Commission of the City of Lynwood was held April 14, 1993 at Bateman Hall V.I.P. Room. (The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act.) Staff person Cynthia Green -Geter called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. Members in attendance were: Verna Culp, and Della Mazziotti. Commissioners Ethel Pacheco, and Betty Jackson were excused due to illness. Staff present was Cynthia Green -Geter and Silvia Lara. Guest in attendance was Mary Lue Lewis, from Compton Community Foster Parent Association. Minutes of February 10, 1993 were tabled for the May 12, 1993 Meeting, due to the lack of a quorum. There were no actions taken during this meeting due to the lack of a quorum, however the following was discussed. A. RECEPTION FOR MAYOR OF BERLIN, GERMANY Ms. Green -Geter mention that the reception for the Mayor of Berlin, Germany will take place Saturday, April 24, 1993 at the School District Building. The Marriott Hotel will Cater and the colors will be red, white, and blue. The program will commence at 11:30 a.m. with a flag salute followed by an Invocation and greetings from Mayor Paul Richards and School District Board President Joe Battle. B. REOPENING OF CHILD CARE ISSUE 1. SOURCES a. Irvine Project b. Dr. Shirley Laddell 2. POSSIBLE LOCATIONS a. Old Bowling Alley LYNWOOD WOMEN'S COMMISSION MEETING OF APRIL 14, 1993 0 3. KIND OF CHILDREN SERVICES a. Children of working mother's of 1. City Hall, 2. School District, and 3. The Community. 4. TYPE OF FACILITY a. Commissioners need to make a decision on what kind of facility they want. 1. Child Care only, 2. Parenting, or 3. Battered Women 5. CANDIDATES FOR NEW FRIENDS OF THE WOMEN'S COMMISSION a. Harriet Woods b. Caffie Greene C. Charlie Knight d. Shirley Edwards of Compton College e. Doris Davis of Palos Verdes f. Eloise Evans G. Shirley Laddell H. Cheryl White C. PUBLIC ORALS - Ms. Culp mentioned that a proposal should be prepared and submitted to council before anything is decided about Child Care. - Ms. Mazziotti mentioned that she will be giving a presentation to the Human Relations Committee of Gardena on the Lynwood Women's Commission. She previously gave a presentation to the city of Hawthorn. LYNWOOD WOMEN'S CO# SSION • MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF MARCH 10, 1993 The regular meeting of the Women's Commission of the City of Lynwood was held March 10, 1993 at Bateman Hall V.I.P. Room. (The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act.) Ethel Pacheco called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. Members in attendance were: Dr. Betty Jackson, Ethel Pacheco, Verna Culp, and Della Mazziotti. Commissioner Everlena McCown has resigned from the Lynwood Women's Commission. Staff present was Cynthia Green - Geter and Silvia Lara. Guest in attendance was Mayor Pro -Tem, Evelyn Wells. Minutes of February 10, 1993 were accepted with minor corrections. I. FINALIZATION FOR PREPARATION OF WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION Mayor Pro -Tem Evelyn Wells apologized for the delay and miscommunication involving the Women's History Month Celebration. Mayor Pro -Tem Evelyn Wells mentioned that new photo for women's commissioners'. Ms'. Green - Geter stated that due to the budget the city will not be able to continue with the original program for the Women's History Month Celebration. Ms. Green - Geter explained that in the new Block Watch program their is a section which include reception and option for honorees. Therefore there will be two honorees and they are Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite -Burke and Former Deputy Supervisor Marcine Shaw. Commissioner's unanimously agreed that something should be given to Ms. McCown to show their appreciation. Staff will take care of selecting a gift to be presented at the Women's Luncheon, if Ms. McCown is present. Suggestions were made by commissioners such as a plaque, resolution, or clock. 1 LYNWOOD WOMEN'S COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF MARCH 10, 1993 Ms. Green -Geter mentioned the following: A. DATE,TIME, AND LOCATION: Due to several inconveniences the date for the Lynwood Women's Commission History Month Luncheon has been changed to Thursday, March 25, 1993 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., at Bateman Hall, room # 2. B. DECORATIONS: An order had been place for purple, white, and lavender balloons with lettering (Women Grasping Inconceivable Heights) for the cost of $240.00. Commissioners thought the price was too high but Ms. Green -Geter answered that it was too late to cancel, because the order arrived today. Ms. Green -Geter mentioned that Ms. Lara will take care of the decoration for this event. C. SOUVENIRS: An order for two hundred champaign glasses with lettering (Women Grasping Inconceivable Heights) Total cost is approximately $1,700.00 Commissioners Thought the price was too high and agreed to try and cancel order. Ms. Culp made a motion to staff to cancel order for glasses if possible second by Ms. Jackson. Commissioners suggested getting something not so expensive like a cup, keychain, or a tote bag. Staff will check with vendors for a more inexpensive item. D. PROGRAM: After ideas were given to staff, commissioners agreed to print a program as follows if the participant are available and accept: 1. Inspirational by Rev. Ernestine Fountain, 2. Introduction of M.C. by Dr. Betty Jackson, 3. Mistress of Ceremony by Andrea L. Hooper, 4. Welcome by Ethel Pacheco, 5. Introductions by Della Mazziotti, and 6. A Call For Women by Mayor Pro -Tem Evelyn Wells. 7. Special Presentation by Women Commissioners A 0 0 II. HEALTH AND WOMEN VIDEO TAPE (22 MINUTES) The video was shown and appreciated for future endeavors. The Women's Commission will began to work on the child care project in our next meeting. There being no further business, the Women's Commission meeting was adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
