Chairman Litke asked if anyone had been hired in the position of Firefighter
Trainee. Chairman Litke inquired as to the procedure being conducted to hire
five (5) trainees. Don Fraser, Assistant City Manager, detailed the process
to the Board. It was noted that the applications had been carefully screened
to obtain the most qualified candidates The next step of the examination
process is the physical agility examination. Mr. Fraser stated this was the
same agility test given Firefighters. After the physical exam there would
be an oral interview process. The top five (5) ranking candidates would be
scheduled for a physical (medical) examination. Upon successful completion
of all phases the top candidates (5) would be scheduled to attend Rio Hondo
College Fire Academy Chairman Litke questioned if the candidates would be
eligible for employment after successful completion of the Academy. Mr. Fraser
stated the City was considering having three eligibility lists: lateral transfer,
entry level, and Firefighter trainee. In the event of an opening the department
would have access to these lists. Mr. Fraser stated some of the guidelines were
still being worked on Mr Fraser felt the eligibility list would be valid for
one year to be in line with all other eligibility lists Chairman Litke ques-
tioned the age requirement, noting that he thought Firefighters had to be of the
age of 21 years before hired. Mr. Robinson and Mr Fraser said they would check
the age requirements but didn't feel this was the case.

Felker and seconded by Commissioner Esparza to adjourn. All in favor Motion
carried. The next regular meeting is scheduled for August 20, 1987.
