YOUTH COMMISSION MINUTES
AUGUST 4, 1993
OPENING CEREMONIES
The City of Lynwood's Youth Commission met in a regular session on
the above date at 6:00 p.m. at the Lynwood Community/ Transit
Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Chairperson Jesus Trigo presided.
Roll Call
Members Present:
Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala,
Commissioner Joe Araujo, and Commissioner Rasheed Gregory.
Members Not Present:
Commissioner Andre Agaalii, Commissioner Siatua Agaalii,
Commissioner Sulu Ah- Ching, Commissioner Cameron Green,
Commissioner Sabrinya Green, Commissioner Daniel Haley,
Commissioner Alton Hamilton, Commissioner Maylene Hardin, and
Commissioner LaChatta Hunter.
Certification of the Posting of the Agenda
Recreation Staff Member Diana J. Escalante certified the posting of
the agenda.
MATTERS
Anti - Graffiti Day
Diana Escalante reported the Anti - Graffiti Day sub - committee met
and proposes the date of Saturday, October 30 for the next Anti -
Graffiti Day. Chairperson Jesus Trigo will confirm the date of the
next sub - committee meeting.
Commissioner LaChatta Hunter arrived at 6:06 p.m.
Commissioner Maylene Hardin arrived at 6:07 p.m.
Approval of Past Minutes
With a quorum present, the minutes were approved. 'It was moved by
Commissioner Rasheed Gregory and seconded by Vice Chairperson
Michelle Zavala.
Youth Service Awards
Commissioner LaChatta Hunter presented the Youth Service Award
Committee report to the Commission. The sub - committee developed the
criteria and awards presentation activity. The next sub - committee
meeting is scheduled for August 19 at 5:00 p.m.
Program Reports
General Recreation Activities
Facility and Program Supervisor Perry Brents updated the Commission
on the following upcoming activities:
A. The City has undergone re- organization. The Recreation
and Parks Department has become the Recreation and
Community Services Department.
B. The Lynwood Sherriff's Department has transferred the
administration of the Sheriff's Athletic League to the
City of Lynwood. The Recreation and Community Services
Department will be operating the programs at the site.
C. The City will sponsor a 16th de Septiembre Celebration on
Sunday, September 19, 1993. The celebration will feature
music, dancing, and vendors.
Teen Center
Facility and Program Supervisor Perry Brents updated the Commission
on the following Teen Center activities:
A. Each month the Teen Center makes available a monthly
calendar of events for its members.
B. The Teen Center has a brand new television to replace the
one that was stolen.
C. The Youth Council will meet every third Wednesday of the
month at the Teen Center. The next meeting is scheduled
for Wednesday, August 18 at 5:00 p.m. All Youth
Commissioners are encouraged to attend.

Commissioner LaChatta Hunter commented on the lack of commitment
some Youth Commissioners are presenting.

Commissioner Joe Araujo reported on the success of the Unity
Festival held on Saturday, July 24.
Commissioner Rasheed Gregory commented on the lack of commitment
some Youth Commissioners are presenting.
Chairperson Jesus Trigo reviewed the 15- minute late policy with the
Commission.
He also discussed changing the age range for the Commission
from 11 - 25 years of age to 13 -25.
He recommended the Commission review Youth Commission
applications before they are submitted to the City Clerk.
Diana Escalante reported that she will check into the City
policy on the issue.
Lastly, he recommended, after a Youth Commissioner has missed
his /her third meeting, the Recreation and Community Services
Department send a letter to the City Council recommending
their removal. A carbon copy of the letter will be sent to the
Commissioner. The Commissioner will be allowed to make a
presentation at the City Council meeting requesting their re-
appointment.
Adjournment
It was moved by Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala and seconded by
Joe Araujo to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting on
September 1, 1993. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m.

at 6:05 p.m. at the Lynwood Community/Transh Center, located at 3798 Martin
Luther Icing Jr. Blvd.
Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala presided.
Roll Call
Commissioners Present:
Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala, Commissioner Sabrinya Green, and Commissioner
Maylene Hardin.
Commissioners Not Present:
Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Commissioner Joe Araujo, Commissioner Rasheed Gregory,
Commissioner Daniel Haley and Commissioner La Chatty Hunter

SCHEDULED MATTERS
Anti-Graffiti Day
A. Mr. Ralph Davis proposed that we should have a Rally and March starting from
Lynwood High School and ending at Mervyn Dymally Park. The date to be
changed to October 23, 1993.
B. Recruit children from the schools, review certain criteria to be met, have them
sign an agreement and hang banners at the school for a month /Teens Against
Graffiti.
Commissioner Joe Araujo arrived at 6.35 p.m.
Commissioner La Chatta Hunter was excused from meeting due to illness.
Approval of Past Minutes
With no quorum present, the minutes were not approved.

Youth Service Awards
A. It has been approved by the sub committee that an Awards Presentation be
scheduled for Friday, December 10, 1993 and the criteria is for the schools in the
community to nominate one or more students that have been a positive image in the
community in their work and standards. A nomination form has been drafted for
this purpose.
B. The child has to be a Lynwood Resident and within the grades 7 -12. There will be
a dance following the Awards Presentation. The cost will be $2.00 without Teen
Center Membership and $1.00 with Teen Center Membership. The Activity will
be from 6pm - l 1pm.
C. Youth Commission will seek sponsorships for the reception items.
General Recreation Activities
Interim Director Ralph Davis updated the Commission on the following upcoming
activities:
A. Mexican Independence on Sunday September 19, 1993 we will have the
opportunity to honor. Cesar Chavez Lane and redevelop Mervyn Dymally Park.
B. Enshrinement Program on October 1, 1993 Wall of Fame to honor residents that
have come through Lynwood and have given the community a positive image
through sports and careers.
C. The Sheriffs Department has the Bike Patrol at Mervyn Dymally Park 20 hours a
week, making it very safe for family and friends. It has been successful with arrests
and citations.
D. Teen Athalon Program with City Wide Competition involving teens from 11 -19
which will include the following activities: swimming, bicycle riding, track events
and a Mr. and Miss Teen Contest at the completion of the events.
E. Y.E.P. - Youth Enrichment Program in which students who have a real interest in
being firemen, engineers and the like to be trained through the City.
Teen Center
Facility and Program Supervisor Perry Brents updated the Commission on the
following Teen Center activities.
A. Teen Center sponsored a trip to Magic Mountain, approximately 147 youngsters
attended, Recreation Leaders supervised and all was well.
B. Positive Motion Program is in full swing 500 -1000 young people are coming
through this program.
C. Youth Council need to have a Job Seminar Workshop.
D Commissioners were invited to come to Overnight Camp on September 2, 1993,
while Summer Day Camp was in the last week.
E. Youth Co need to take a more positive attitude towards their role.

A motion was made by Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala and seconded by Sabrinya
Green to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting on October 6, 1993. Motion
